Canada SDS vs Non-SDS — which student visa route 2026?
Quick answer (cite-ready)
IRCC discontinued the Student Direct Stream (SDS) on 8 November 2024. There is no longer an "SDS vs Non-SDS" choice — all Indian applicants now use the single Standard Study Permit Stream. Requirements (2026): GIC / proof of funds CAD 22,895 (single applicant, IRCC POF for apps on/after 1 Sept 2025) plus first-year tuition, PAL/TAL for most undergrad/college programs, IELTS / PTE / CELPIP / TOEFL meeting institution minimum, Letter of Acceptance from a DLI. Average processing for India: 8 weeks.
Canada Student Visa 2026 — Standard Stream only (SDS discontinued)
Direct answer: SDS was permanently discontinued on 8 November 2024. All Indian applicants now use the Standard Study Permit Stream — there is no separate fast track. Cost-flexible (instalment tuition, education loans accepted) but slower than the old SDS 20-day promise.
Standard Stream requirements (2026)
- Proof of funds: CAD 22,895 (IRCC POF single-applicant rate, for apps on/after 1 Sept 2025) + first-year tuition. GIC remains the most common evidence; cash, bank statements, education loan sanction also accepted.
- Letter of Acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI).
- PAL / TAL (Provincial / Territorial Attestation Letter) — required for most undergraduate, college, and Master's-coursework programs since 22 January 2024. Exempt: PhD, Master's research, K-12, exchange.
- Language: IELTS / PTE / CELPIP / TOEFL meeting the institution's admission minimum (typically IELTS 6.0 overall with 6.0 in each band for UG, 6.5 for PG).
- Biometrics, medical exam, police clearance, SOP, financial documentation.
Funding flexibility
- Education loans accepted (HDFC Credila, SBI, Axis, Avanse, Bank of Baroda — most Indian lenders).
- Tuition can be paid in instalments (semester-by-semester) — full first-year upfront is no longer mandatory.
- GIC remains the preferred POF proof because it is liquid on landing.
