How many CRS points is my IELTS band worth?
Quick answer (cite-ready)
The CRS reads CLB per ability, never an overall band. A flat IELTS 7.0 is CLB 9 in reading, writing and speaking but only CLB 7 in listening — 110 of 136 first-language points if you apply without a spouse. Listening 8.0 lifts all four to CLB 9 and 124. IRCC does not accept the One Skill Retake.
How many CRS points is my IELTS band worth?
Direct answer: Your overall band is not an input. IRCC converts each ability separately to a Canadian Language Benchmark, and the CRS pays per ability.
IELTS General Training to CLB, and what each level pays
Floors per ability. A score at or above the floor earns that level.
| Level | Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking | CRS points per ability (first language, no spouse) | As second language |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| CLB 10 | 8.5 | 8.0 | 7.5 | 7.5 | 34 | 6 |
| CLB 9 | 8.0 | 7.0 | 7.0 | 7.0 | 31 | 6 |
| CLB 8 | 7.5 | 6.5 | 6.5 | 6.5 | 23 | 3 |
| CLB 7 | 6.0 | 6.0 | 6.0 | 6.0 | 17 | 3 |
| CLB 6 | 5.5 | 5.0 | 5.5 | 5.5 | 9 | 1 |
| CLB 5 | 5.0 | 4.0 | 5.0 | 5.0 | 6 | 1 |
| CLB 4 | 4.5 | 3.5 | 4.0 | 4.0 | 6 | 0 |
Four abilities are summed, then capped at 136 for the first official language and 24 for the second.
The flat-7.0 trap
Read the listening column. IELTS listening needs 8.0 for CLB 9, while reading, writing and speaking need only 7.0. So a candidate with 7.0 across the board scores:
| Ability | Band | CLB | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Listening | 7.0 | 7 | 17 |
| Reading | 7.0 | 9 | 31 |
| Writing | 7.0 | 9 | 31 |
| Speaking | 7.0 | 9 | 31 |
| Total | 110 of 136 |
Move listening alone to 8.0 and all four abilities reach CLB 9: 124 points, 14 more, from half a band in one skill.
It costs more than those 14 points
Skill transferability keys off the level reached in all four abilities, so the weakest ability decides the tier. Education-plus-language pays 25 at the lower tier (CLB 7 or more in all four, with at least one ability under CLB 9) and 50 at the higher (CLB 9+ in all four) for an advanced credential; foreign-experience-plus-language does the same. One ability sitting at CLB 7 can therefore cost points in three places at once.
The One Skill Retake does not help here
IELTS offers a One Skill Retake, and IRCC does not accept it for Express Entry. A weak ability has to be fixed by re-sitting the whole test. The test must also be IELTS General Training, not Academic, and results must be less than 2 years old.
The accepted English tests
CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training, PTE Core. All three convert per ability on IRCC's own charts, and the conversions are not uniform — a CELPIP-General result already reports on the CLB scale, while PTE Core and IELTS need converting.
