At a glance, CELPIP is cheaper, delivers faster results, and maps directly to CLB levels. IELTS offers far more test centres in India and global recognition beyond Canada. Your choice depends on whether Canada is your only destination, how comfortable you are with computer-based speaking, and where you live in India. For the full CELPIP guide, read our dedicated article.

Test Format Comparison

Understanding the format is critical when comparing CELPIP vs IELTS for Canada. CELPIP is 100% computer-based — you read on screen, listen through headphones, type your writing, and record your speaking into a microphone. There is no human interaction during the test. IELTS General Training offers both paper and computer options, and the Speaking section is always a face-to-face interview with a certified examiner.

CELPIP vs IELTS — Section-by-Section Format Comparison
SectionCELPIP FormatIELTS GT Format
Listening47-55 min, 6 parts, Canadian accents30 min, 4 sections, mixed accents
Reading55-60 min, 4 parts, Canadian context60 min, 3 sections, general topics
Writing53-60 min, Email + Survey response60 min, Letter + Essay (250+ words)
Speaking15-20 min, 8 tasks, record to computer11-14 min, 3 parts, face-to-face

One of the biggest practical differences is that CELPIP is completed in a single sitting on one computer. IELTS paper-based test-takers sometimes have their Speaking scheduled on a different day. If convenience matters to you, CELPIP's one-sitting format is a clear advantage. Check out our CELPIP tips to prepare for the computer-based format.

Pro Tip

If you are an introvert or feel anxious speaking to a real person, CELPIP's computer-recorded speaking removes that pressure entirely. You speak into a microphone with no one listening in real time. Many Indian students score 1-2 CLB levels higher in CELPIP Speaking compared to IELTS Speaking for this exact reason.

Scoring & CLB Comparison

For Canada immigration, your score doesn't matter in isolation — what matters is your Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level. IRCC converts both CELPIP and IELTS scores to CLB levels, and your CRS points are calculated based on CLB. Here is where CELPIP vs IELTS for Canada gets interesting: CELPIP maps directly (CELPIP 7 = CLB 7), while IELTS requires a conversion table. Read our detailed breakdown of CELPIP scores for PR and the CELPIP CLB score chart.

← Swipe left to see more columns →

CLB Conversion: CELPIP vs IELTS General Training
CLB LevelCELPIP ScoreIELTS Band (L)IELTS Band (R)IELTS Band (W)IELTS Band (S)

CLB 998.07.07.07.0
CLB 887.56.56.56.5
CLB 776.06.06.06.0
CLB 665.55.05.55.5
CLB 555.04.05.05.0
CLB 444.53.54.04.0

Notice how simple CELPIP scoring is: a CELPIP score of 9 in each section gives you CLB 9 across the board. For IELTS, achieving CLB 9 requires different band scores in each section — Listening 8.0, Reading 7.0, Writing 7.0, and Speaking 7.0. This asymmetry means one low IELTS section can drag your overall CLB down even if other sections are high.

Speaking Section: Computer vs Examiner

The Speaking section is often the deciding factor when students compare CELPIP vs IELTS for Canada. In CELPIP, you respond to 8 on-screen prompts by recording your voice into a microphone. There is a preparation timer, a recording timer, and you can see the prompt on screen throughout. No one is watching or listening — your recordings are scored later by certified raters.

In IELTS, you sit across from a human examiner for 11-14 minutes. The examiner asks questions, follows up, and adjusts the conversation based on your responses. Some students love this interactive format because it feels like a natural conversation. Others find it nerve-wracking and lose confidence, especially when the examiner's facial expressions seem neutral or critical.

CELPIP Speaking tasks include: giving advice, talking about a personal experience, describing a scene, making predictions, comparing options, dealing with a difficult situation, expressing opinions, and describing an unusual situation. These are very practical and mirror real Canadian life scenarios.

IELTS Speaking parts include: Part 1 (introductory questions, 4-5 min), Part 2 (long turn / cue card, 3-4 min), and Part 3 (abstract discussion, 4-5 min). IELTS Part 2 can be challenging because you must speak for 1-2 minutes continuously on a topic you receive only 1 minute to prepare.

Warning

CELPIP is accepted only for Canada — immigration, citizenship, and some Canadian professional licensing. If you also plan to apply for jobs, universities, or immigration in the UK, Australia, the USA, or any other country, IELTS is the only test with global recognition. Do not take CELPIP if Canada is not your sole destination. Compare with CELPIP vs PTE Core as well.

Writing Section Comparison

Writing is where CELPIP vs IELTS for Canada shows its starkest difference. CELPIP Writing has two tasks: Task 1 is an email (150-200 words, ~27 minutes), and Task 2 is responding to a survey question (150-200 words, ~26 minutes). Neither task requires a formal essay. You simply need clear, organised, and grammatically correct responses.

IELTS General Training Writing also has two tasks: Task 1 is a letter (150+ words, 20 minutes), and Task 2 is a full essay (250+ words, 40 minutes). Task 2 carries twice the weight of Task 1 and requires a structured argument with introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. For many Indian students, this essay is the hardest part of IELTS.

If essay writing is not your strong suit, CELPIP's email-and-survey format is significantly easier. EEC's CELPIP preparation course includes 20+ writing templates that cover every possible email and survey scenario. For IELTS coaching, EEC provides 30+ essay templates with band-9 model answers.

“For students whose only goal is Canada — PR, citizenship, or PGWP — CELPIP is often the smarter choice. It's cheaper, faster, maps directly to CLB, and the writing section is genuinely easier. Why make the test harder than it needs to be?”

— Meera Shah, CELPIP & IELTS Trainer, EEC

Fee & Availability in India

Cost is a practical concern for Indian students comparing CELPIP vs IELTS for Canada. CELPIP costs ₹12,500 + applicable taxes, while IELTS General Training costs ₹16,250. That is a saving of approximately ₹3,000-4,000 with CELPIP. However, availability is where IELTS has a massive advantage.

CELPIP is currently available in Delhi, Gurgaon, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Chandigarh, Ahmedabad, and Kolkata. If you live in Gujarat, EEC offers coaching in Ahmedabad, coaching in Surat, and coaching in Vadodara with the nearest CELPIP test centre being Ahmedabad. IELTS, on the other hand, has test centres in virtually every Indian city with a population above 500,000. If your city does not have a CELPIP centre, consider EEC's online coaching so you can prepare remotely and travel only on test day.

Good News

EEC offers expert coaching for both CELPIP and IELTS at all 26 branches across Gujarat — plus live online classes for students anywhere in India. CELPIP coaching is ₹7,500, IELTS coaching is ₹7,500. You get personalised CLB prediction, mock tests, and one-on-one speaking practice regardless of which test you choose.

Who Should Choose Which Test?

Choose CELPIP If...

1. Canada is your only destination. Whether you want Canada PR through Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs, Canadian citizenship, or even a Canadian work permit, CELPIP is designed specifically for the Canadian context. Every listening passage features Canadian accents, and every writing/speaking task mirrors situations you'll face in Canada.

2. You prefer typing over handwriting. CELPIP is 100% computer-based. If you're faster and more comfortable typing, you'll find the writing section much easier than IELTS paper-based.

3. You feel anxious speaking to a real person. CELPIP's computer-recorded speaking removes examiner pressure entirely. Many EEC students report scoring 1-2 CLB levels higher in CELPIP Speaking.

4. You want a direct CLB score. CELPIP 7 = CLB 7, no conversion table needed. This makes target-setting much simpler.

5. You want faster, cheaper results. CELPIP costs ₹3,000-4,000 less than IELTS and delivers results in 3-4 days instead of 5-13 days.

Choose IELTS If...

1. You're applying to multiple countries. If your plan includes the UK, Australia, New Zealand, or even USA alongside Canada, IELTS is accepted in 140+ countries. CELPIP works only for Canada.

2. You prefer face-to-face speaking. Some people genuinely perform better in conversations with a real person. If you're an extrovert who thrives on interaction, IELTS Speaking may feel more natural.

3. Your city doesn't have a CELPIP centre. With 50+ test centres in India, IELTS is far more accessible. If travelling to one of 9 CELPIP cities is impractical, IELTS is the logical choice.

4. You want maximum flexibility in test dates. IELTS offers near-weekly test dates in major cities. CELPIP has only 2-4 dates per month per city.

5. You need a globally portable score. If your circumstances change and you later want to use your English score for UK, Australia, or other purposes, IELTS remains valid worldwide. A CELPIP score has zero value outside Canada.

Also consider: if you score well on one test but not the other, you can always switch. Some EEC students take IELTS first, find their Speaking score is lower than expected, and then switch to CELPIP where they score higher. Others try CELPIP, miss CLB 9 in Reading, and switch to IELTS where the reading passages suit them better. EEC coaches both, so switching is seamless. If budget allows, you can also add French for CRS bonus points — an additional 20-50 CRS points for TEF/TCF French proficiency.

Frequently Asked Questions

Many Indian students find CELPIP easier because: (1) speaking is recorded to a computer, not face-to-face with an examiner, reducing anxiety; (2) it is 100% computer-based with a user-friendly interface; (3) CELPIP scores map directly to CLB (no conversion needed); (4) results come in 3-4 days. However, IELTS has more test centers (50+ vs 9 in India) and broader global recognition.
Both are equally accepted by IRCC for all Canada immigration programs. Choose CELPIP if: you prefer computer-based testing, want faster results (3-4 days), and are only targeting Canada. Choose IELTS if: you want global recognition (140+ countries), prefer face-to-face speaking, or need more test center options in India.
Yes, absolutely. CELPIP-General is accepted for all Express Entry programs (FSWP, CEC, FSTP) as a direct alternative to IELTS General Training. Both give the same CLB levels and CRS points. IRCC treats them identically for immigration purposes.
CELPIP speaking is often perceived as easier because you record responses to a computer — no face-to-face interaction, no examiner bias concerns. You get preparation time before each task and can see a timer on screen. IELTS speaking is a live conversation with an examiner, which some find more natural but others find stressful.
CELPIP-General costs ₹12,500 + taxes (~₹12,797) while IELTS General Training costs ₹16,250 in India. CELPIP is approximately ₹3,500 cheaper. However, consider availability — IELTS has 50+ centers across India while CELPIP has only 9, so travel costs may apply for CELPIP.
Not exactly. CELPIP writing has 2 tasks: Task 1 is writing an email (27 min, formal/semi-formal/informal) and Task 2 is responding to a survey question (26 min, opinion-based). IELTS General Training has Task 1 (letter writing) and Task 2 (essay writing, 250 words). CELPIP writing is generally considered less demanding as word count requirements are lower (150-200 words per task).
No, CELPIP is primarily accepted only for Canadian immigration and citizenship purposes. It is not widely recognized for university admissions, employment, or immigration in other countries. If you need an English proficiency test for UK, Australia, USA, or other countries, IELTS or PTE are better choices.
You can take both tests, but you can only submit one score for your Express Entry profile. You cannot combine scores from both tests. Many students take both and submit whichever gives them higher CLB levels. However, EEC recommends focusing preparation on one test for better results.
CELPIP gives results in 3-4 business days online. IELTS computer-based gives results in 3-5 days, while IELTS paper-based takes 13 days. For urgent immigration deadlines, CELPIP offers the fastest turnaround.
CELPIP uses Canadian English, which is very close to American English. If you are comfortable with American English accents, vocabulary, and spelling, you will find CELPIP listening and reading sections familiar. IELTS uses a mix of British, Australian, and American accents, which can be more challenging for some students.
