To get Permanent Residency (PR), you need 5 years of residence. However, student years count as HALF (50%). Example: A 4-year Bachelor's degree = 2 Years of residence. You need to work for 3 more years to reach the 5-year mark.

No. Dependents on a student visa do NOT have the right to work. They can only work if they find an employer willing to sponsor a separate work permit.

Yes. Almost all universities take a Credibility Interview (online) before admission. Additionally, the Consulate may take a face-to-face interview in English regarding your course and finances.

After graduation, you can get the Autorización de Residencia para Búsqueda de Empleo o Emprendimiento — valid for 12 months under RD 1155/2024 (in force 20-May-2025). Apply within 60 days before or 90 days after your student card expires. NOTE: you do NOT have the right to work during the search period itself — if you find a job, the employer must apply for a work permit. Once approved, the qualifying salary threshold is ≥ SMI: €1,221/mo over 14 payments = €17,094/yr (or €1,424.50/mo 12-pay equivalent — RD 126/2026). RD 1155/2024 Article 190 also allows direct switch from student stay to residence-and-work permit immediately upon obtaining the degree, with no prior-study waiting period.
