YES! Unlike many other EU countries (like Germany/France where it's 50%), in Portugal 100% of your student visa time counts towards the 5-year Permanent Residency (Autorização de Residência Permanente) requirement.

10 years of legal residence is now the rule for Indian nationals (non-CPLP / non-EU) — the previous 5-year minimum was raised to 7 years (CPLP/EU citizens) and 10 years (all others) by Lei Orgânica n.º 1/2026, effective 19 May 2026 (per justica.gov.pt). You also need A2 Portuguese, clean criminal record, and proof of integration. PR (ARP) is still reachable after 5 years.

Portugal is very strict. You MUST Apostille your originals: Degree, Transcripts, Police Clearance Certificate (PCC), and Birth Certificate. Process: Notary -> State Home Dept -> MEA (Central).

Yes. Many universities accept a Medium of Instruction (MOI) certificate. However, the Embassy may ask for a formal English test or conduct an interview to check your proficiency.

After graduation, you get a 12-Month Job Search Visa. Once you find a job, you switch to a Work Permit (Residence Permit for Employed Workers - Art. 88).

Yes, via Family Reunification at AIMA. Spouse gets FULL Work Rights. You need to show accommodation and additional subsistence funds for the spouse (~50% of IAS, around €300/mo). Best to apply after the main student gets the residence permit (Título de Residência).

The Golden Visa real estate route was eliminated in October 2023. Remaining options: investment funds (€500K+), capital transfer (€1.5M+). For students: D4 visa; under Lei 23/2007 (Art. 97) there is no strict 20 hrs/week limit — work must simply be 'complementary to studies' and notified to AIMA. Subsistence proof is RMMG-linked under Portaria 1563/2007 — €920/month (~€11,040/year, equal to the 2026 RMMG) plus tuition; consulate buffer commonly higher. National minimum wage €920/month from Jan 2026 (RMMG). Student time counts 100% toward 5-year PR.
