The CELPIP CLB score chart is the single most searched resource for Indian applicants targeting Canada PR through Express Entry in 2026. Whether you're comparing your CELPIP CLB score chart conversion to IELTS or PTE Core, calculating CRS points, or confirming the minimum CLB for your immigration stream, this guide has every table you need — in one place. With job offer CRS points removed since March 2025, your language score is now the most powerful controllable factor in your Express Entry profile. EEC's expert CELPIP coaching helps you hit the exact CLB level that maximizes your CRS — because in 2026, every single CLB level matters.
“CELPIP's 1:1 CLB mapping makes it the simplest English test to understand for Canada immigration. No conversion tables, no guesswork — CELPIP 9 equals CLB 9, period.”
— EEC Language Assessment Team, 27+ Years of Canada Immigration Counseling
CELPIP to CLB: Direct Mapping — The Foundation of Every PR Application
The Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) system is the universal standard used by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for all immigration programs. CELPIP — the Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program — maps directly to CLB levels, which means there is zero conversion math involved. CELPIP Level 7 equals CLB 7. CELPIP Level 9 equals CLB 9. This is the fundamental advantage of choosing CELPIP over tests like IELTS or PTE Core, where separate conversion charts are required. For a complete breakdown of the test itself, read our CELPIP complete guide.
Below is the official CELPIP-to-CLB mapping table used by IRCC in 2026. This applies to CELPIP-General (the full four-skill test required for PR), not CELPIP-General LS (Listening and Speaking only, used for citizenship).

If you're deciding between CELPIP, IELTS General Training, and PTE Core for your Canada PR application, this mega conversion table puts all three tests side by side at each CLB level. IRCC treats all three equally — CLB 9 from CELPIP carries the same CRS points as CLB 9 from IELTS or PTE Core. The choice comes down to test format, availability, and which test lets you score highest. For a head-to-head comparison, read our dedicated CELPIP vs PTE Core analysis.

| CLB Level | CELPIP Score | IELTS Score (L/R/W/S) | PTE Core Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| CLB 10 | 10 | 8.5 / 8.0 / 7.5 / 7.5 | 89–90 |
| CLB 9 | 9 | 8.0 / 7.0 / 7.0 / 7.0 | 84–88 |
| CLB 8 | 8 | 7.5 / 6.5 / 6.5 / 6.5 | 76–83 |
| CLB 7 | 7 | 6.0 / 6.0 / 6.0 / 6.0 | 60–75 |
| CLB 6 | 6 | 5.5 / 5.0 / 5.5 / 5.5 | 50–59 |
| CLB 5 | 5 | 5.0 / 4.0 / 5.0 / 5.0 | 39–49 |
| CLB 4 | 4 | 4.5 / 3.5 / 4.0 / 4.0 | 32–38 |
Notice how IELTS requires different band scores per skill to reach the same CLB, while CELPIP is uniform. PTE Core uses a single overall score range for each CLB level. For Indian applicants aiming for CLB 9, the IELTS thresholds — 8.0 Listening, 7.0 Reading, 7.0 Writing, 7.0 Speaking — are notoriously difficult to hit in a single attempt. CELPIP 9 across the board, while still challenging, avoids the per-skill mismatch problem. Explore CLB 9 preparation strategies tailored for Indian test-takers.

CRS Points Without Spouse/Partner: How Every CLB Level Translates to Points
The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) assigns language points based on your CLB level in each of the four abilities — Speaking, Listening, Reading, and Writing. If you are a single applicant or your spouse/partner is not included in your Express Entry profile, language can contribute up to 136 CRS points out of 500 core human capital factors. This is the single largest category in CRS. Use EEC's CRS calculator to model your total score.

| Ability | CLB 4-5 | CLB 6 | CLB 7 | CLB 8 | CLB 9 | CLB 10+ |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Speaking | 6 | 9 | 17 | 23 | 31 | 34 |
| Listening | 6 | 9 | 17 | 23 | 31 | 34 |
| Reading | 6 | 9 | 17 | 23 | 31 | 34 |
| Writing | 6 | 9 | 17 | 23 | 31 | 34 |
| Total | 24 | 36 | 68 | 92 | 124 | 136 |
The jump from CLB 7 (68 points) to CLB 9 (124 points) is a staggering 56 CRS points. For context, a three-year Canadian work experience adds only 40 additional CRS points, and a master's degree adds just 29 more than a bachelor's. Language improvement through CELPIP delivers more CRS value than almost any other factor. Read the full CRS breakdown in our CELPIP score for Canada PR article.
CRS Points With Spouse/Partner: Adjusted Language Points
If your spouse or common-law partner is accompanying you on your Express Entry application, the maximum language points decrease slightly to 128 CRS points. However, your spouse's own language ability can earn additional CRS points separately — up to 20 points for the spouse's CLB 9+ — making combined household language preparation a powerful strategy.

CLB 7 vs CLB 9: The Real CRS Impact That Decides Your ITA
Let's do the math that every Express Entry applicant needs to understand. This is the most important comparison in the entire CELPIP CLB score chart.
Without Spouse: The 56-Point Difference
At CLB 7 across all four abilities: 17 × 4 = 68 CRS points. At CLB 9 across all four abilities: 31 × 4 = 124 CRS points. That's a difference of 56 CRS points — purely from improving two CELPIP levels. Recent Express Entry general draws have had cutoffs between 470-510 CRS. For an applicant sitting at 460 with CLB 7, upgrading to CLB 9 pushes them to 516 — comfortably above the cutoff.
With Spouse: The 52-Point Difference
At CLB 7 with spouse: 16 × 4 = 64 CRS points. At CLB 9 with spouse: 29 × 4 = 116 CRS points. A difference of 52 CRS points — still enough to jump from outside ITA range into competitive territory.

| Program | Minimum CLB | CELPIP Score | Realistic Target |
|---|---|---|---|
| FSWP (Federal Skilled Worker) | CLB 7 all 4 | CELPIP 7 | CLB 9+ recommended |
| CEC TEER 0/1 | CLB 7 all 4 | CELPIP 7 | CLB 9+ for competitive CRS |
| CEC TEER 2/3 | CLB 5 all 4 | CELPIP 5 | CLB 7+ recommended |
| FSTP (Federal Skilled Trades) | CLB 7 S&L, CLB 5 R&W | CELPIP 7/5 | CLB 7+ all recommended |
| PNPs (Provincial Nominee) | CLB 4–7 varies | CELPIP 4–7 | CLB 6+ for most streams |
| PGWP (University Degree) | CLB 7 all 4 | CELPIP 7 | Aim CLB 8+ for future PR |
| PGWP (College Diploma) | CLB 5 all 4 | CELPIP 5 | Aim CLB 7+ for future PR |
| Canadian Citizenship | CLB 4 S&L only | CELPIP 4 | Already met if PR via FSWP |
For students planning the study → PGWP → PR pathway through studying in Canada, note that you'll need to meet PGWP language requirements and later hit a competitive CLB for Express Entry. Taking CELPIP in your final semester and targeting CLB 9 covers both requirements in a single test. Need help financing your Canadian education? Book Free ConsultationHow to Calculate Your CRS Score Using the CELPIP CLB Score Chart
Here is a step-by-step method to translate your CELPIP result into an accurate CRS estimate, using the tables in this article.
Step 1: Convert Each CELPIP Skill to CLB
Use Table 1 above. Since CELPIP maps 1:1, your CELPIP Listening 9 = CLB 9, CELPIP Writing 8 = CLB 8, and so on. Write down the CLB level for each of your four skills.
Step 2: Look Up Per-Skill CRS Points
Use Table 3 (without spouse) or Table 4 (with spouse). Find the CRS points for each skill at its CLB level. Add all four skill points together for your total first-language CRS contribution.
Step 3: Check Skill Transferability Bonuses
If any skill is CLB 7+ and you have a post-secondary credential, you earn additional CRS points under Skill Transferability. If any skill is CLB 9+ and you have Canadian work experience, that's another bonus. These can add up to 50 extra CRS points.
Step 4: Consider French for Additional Points
If your first language CRS is already maximized, adding French (NCLC 7+ in TEF/TCF) can earn 50 additional CRS points. EEC's French course for CRS bonus points is specifically designed for this purpose and can be taken alongside CELPIP preparation.
