Common questions about Iceland.

Yes, but ONLY in Public Universities (University of Iceland, Akureyri, Hólar, Agricultural Univ). You only pay a small registration fee. Private universities (Reykjavík Univ, Bifröst) charge full tuition.

You need 4 Years of continuous residence on a permit that forms the basis for PR (like a Work Permit). Student years do NOT count directly, but help you get the Job Seeker Visa -> Work Permit path.

NO. This is a critical rule. Your spouse can apply to join you (Family Reunification) and apply together, BUT the spouse permit is for 'Residence Only'. If they want to work, they must find an employer to sponsor a separate Work Permit.

Generally NO. Iceland is strict. A formal English test (IELTS 6.5 / PTE 58) is required for the Residence Permit application. Relying on MOI increases rejection risk.

Since the August 2023 amendment to the Foreign Nationals Act, university graduates in Iceland may renew their residence permit for up to 3 years (36 months) from graduation to seek employment based on their expert knowledge (per island.is — Directorate of Immigration). Older guides citing only 6 months are outdated. Once employed, you switch to a Work Permit.
