For most Indian students in 2026, PTE Academic is slightly easier than IELTS because it is fully computer-based with AI scoring, provides results in 1-2 days, and eliminates human examiner variability. However, IELTS is better for students who are strong conversational speakers. Both tests are accepted by universities in Canada, Australia, UK, USA, and New Zealand.

IELTS vs PTE — Frequently Asked Questions

Is PTE easier than IELTS for Indian students?

For most Indian students, PTE is considered slightly easier because it is entirely computer-based with AI scoring (no human examiner bias), has faster results (1-2 days vs 13 days), and the speaking section uses a microphone instead of a face-to-face interview. However, students with strong conversational English may prefer IELTS. At EEC, 60% of our students choose PTE and 40% choose IELTS.

Which test is better for Canada — IELTS or PTE?

For Canada student visa, both IELTS Academic and PTE Academic are accepted by most universities. For Canada PR (Express Entry), IELTS General Training was the only option until November 2023, when PTE Core was also approved. If you plan to pursue PR after studies, PTE Core is now accepted.

Which test is better for Australia — IELTS or PTE?

For Australia, PTE Academic is widely preferred by Indian students because Australian immigration fully accepts PTE for visa applications, the scoring is more granular (1-point increments vs 0.5 band), and results come in 1-2 days. Both tests are equally accepted by all Australian universities.

Can I switch from IELTS to PTE?

Yes, you can switch from IELTS to PTE at any time. The core English skills are the same — reading, writing, listening, speaking. At EEC, we help students transition between tests. Many students who did not achieve their target IELTS score switch to PTE and succeed.

What IELTS band equals what PTE score?

IELTS 6.0 = PTE 50, IELTS 6.5 = PTE 58, IELTS 7.0 = PTE 65, IELTS 7.5 = PTE 73, IELTS 8.0 = PTE 79. These are official concordance scores used by universities and immigration departments.
