Required for Bachelor's degree at Italian public universities
If you have completed 12th standard (HSC) and want to pursue a Bachelor's degree at an Italian public (government) university, the Digital SAT is required by most institutions as part of their admission criteria. This applies to engineering, sciences, economics, and other undergraduate programs.
Indian students who have completed Class 12 and wish to apply for a Bachelor's (Laurea Triennale) at Italian public universities.
Most Italian public universities — Politecnico di Milano, Sapienza, Bologna, Padua, Polito, and many more require SAT for non-EU undergraduate applicants.
A competitive SAT score of 1200+ (out of 1600) is recommended. Some top programs like Engineering at Polimi may expect 1300+.
Without a valid SAT score, your application to most Italian public university Bachelor's programs will not be considered. Plan ahead — take the Digital SAT at least 3-4 months before the university application deadline. Pre-enrollment on the Universitaly portal also requires your SAT score.

IELTS is required for English-taught programs, typically IELTS 6.0-6.5 overall with no band below 5.5. However, some universities accept alternative proof like: TOEFL iBT (80+), PTE Academic (56+), Cambridge Certificate, or Medium of Instruction letter from your previous university confirming English medium education.
Yes, some Italian universities accept Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter from your previous English-medium institution instead of IELTS. Alternatively, some universities offer Italian-taught programs where you need Italian language certification (B1/B2) instead of English proficiency. Contact specific universities for their exemption policies.
Italy has two main intakes: Fall/Autumn Intake (September-October) is the primary intake with maximum seats and programs. Spring Intake (February-March) is available at select universities with limited programs. Most international students apply for Fall intake as it offers more options and scholarship opportunities.
Most Italian universities open applications for 2026-2027 intake between December 10-17, 2025. Round 1 typically closes in January-February 2026. Non-EU students should apply in Round 1 or 2 as Round 3 is usually restricted to EU/residents only. Early application is crucial for visa processing time.
Universitaly (www.universitaly.it) is Italy's official government portal for university applications. Pre-enrollment through Universitaly is MANDATORY for all non-EU students. You must: 1) Create an account, 2) Submit pre-enrollment request, 3) Get approval from chosen university. This generates the 'pre-enrollment summary' required for visa applications.
