When should you apply?
90-30 Days Before Expiry
Safe Zone. Apply now to get "Maintained Status". You can keep studying even after expiry while the decision is pending.
Last 30 Days
Risky Zone. If you don't apply before the expiry date, you lose status and must stop studying immediately.
Visa Expired
Status Lost. You have 90 days to apply for Restoration of Status. You CANNOT study or work until approved.
2026 Rules for Inside-Canada Students
- • PAL Exemption: If you are applying to extend your study permit, you DO NOT need a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL).
- • Cost of Living Increase: For 2026, the cost-of-living financial requirement is $23,448 per year (plus tuition) for a single applicant.
- • Biometrics: If you gave biometrics in the last 10 years, they are likely still valid. If older, you must renew them.
Warning: Unauthorized Work
If you worked more than 24 hours/week when you were not supposed to, IRCC will reject your extension.

Warning: Flagpoling
Going to the US border (Flagpoling) to renew your permit is becoming risky. Borders have reduced hours and often turn students away.
