International students in USA can legally work part-time during studies — earning $12–$22 per hour depending on the state and job type. F-1 visa holders are allowed to work 20 hours per week on-campus during the semester and 40 hours during holidays. At the federal minimum wage of $7.25/hour (but states like California, New York, and Washington pay $16–$17/hour), students earn $800–$2,500 per month. Popular on-campus jobs in USA for students include library assistant, campus ambassador, teaching assistant, barista, lab assistant, and IT help desk. This 2026 guide from EEC — 27+ years of experience, 50,000+ students placed — covers every part-time job option, F-1 visa work rules, state-wise salary data, CPT internships, tax filing, and realistic earning calculations for Indian students.

F-1 Visa Work Rules — What International Students Can & Cannot Do

Understanding F-1 visa work rules in USA is the first step before looking for any part-time job. The US government strictly regulates student employment — violating these rules can result in visa termination and deportation. Here are the four categories of legal employment for F-1 students:

← Swipe left to see more columns →

F-1 Visa Work Authorization Types — USA 2026 (Source: USCIS/SEVP)
Work TypeWhen AllowedHours PermittedAuthorization NeededKey Restriction
On-Campus EmploymentFrom Day 1 of enrollment20 hrs/week (term), 40 hrs/week (breaks)No special authorization — automaticMust be on-campus or educationally affiliated
CPT (Curricular Practical Training)After 1 academic year (9 months)20 hrs/week (part-time) or 40 hrs/week (full-time)DSO approval + updated I-20Must be integral to curriculum (internship/co-op)
OPT (Optional Practical Training)After degree completion40 hrs/week (full-time only)USCIS approval (Form I-765)Job must relate to major field of study
Severe Economic HardshipAfter 1 academic year + proven hardship20 hrs/week (term), 40 hrs/week (breaks)USCIS approval (Form I-765)Must prove unforeseen financial emergency

Warning

Working off-campus without authorization is illegal. If you work off-campus (Uber, DoorDash, freelance, or any employer not on your campus) without CPT or OPT authorization, you violate your F-1 status. USCIS can terminate your SEVIS record, and you may face a 3-year or 10-year bar from re-entering the USA. Never risk your visa for a few hundred dollars — stick to on-campus employment until you have proper CPT/OPT authorization.

On-Campus Employment — What Qualifies?

On-campus employment is the safest and most accessible part-time job option for F-1 students. It includes any position at the university itself OR at a commercially operated facility that serves students on campus (bookstores, cafeterias, campus coffee shops). Positions at off-campus locations affiliated with the university — such as research labs at a teaching hospital or a university-funded community project — may also qualify if your DSO approves them. You do NOT need a Social Security Number (SSN) to be hired, but you'll need to apply for one once you receive a job offer.

Pro Tip

Teaching and Research Assistantships are the gold standard. TA and RA positions often come with tuition waivers (covering $20,000–$50,000/year) PLUS a monthly stipend of $1,500–$2,500. These are especially common for MS and PhD students. Apply directly to professors in your department — send a professional email with your resume and a brief explanation of your research interests. The best time to apply is 2–3 months before the semester starts.

For STEM students, IT help desk and lab assistant positions offer relevant work experience that strengthens your resume for future OPT and H-1B applications. Non-STEM students can build transferable skills in campus marketing, writing centers, or student government. The key is to start applying in the first week of classes — popular positions fill quickly. Check your university's Handshake portal, student employment website, or bulletin boards in academic departments.

Minimum Wage by State — How Much Do Students Earn in USA? (2026)

The minimum wage for students in USA varies dramatically by state. While the federal minimum wage is $7.25/hour, most states where international students study pay significantly more. Your actual earnings depend on where you attend university. Here is a state-by-state breakdown:

← Swipe left to see more columns →

Minimum Wage by State for International Students — USA 2026 (Source: DOL)
StateMinimum Wage (2026)Major University CitiesMonthly Earnings (20 hrs/week)Notes
California$16.50/hrLA, San Francisco, San Diego$1,320Highest for large states

New York$16.00/hrNYC, Buffalo, Rochester$1,280NYC metro even higher
Massachusetts$15.00/hrBoston, Cambridge$1,200Strong university job market
Illinois$14.00/hrChicago, Champaign$1,120Rising steadily
New Jersey$15.49/hrNewark, New Brunswick$1,239Near NYC opportunities
Arizona$14.70/hrPhoenix, Tempe, Tucson$1,176Low cost + decent wages
Ohio$10.65/hrColumbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati$852Low wages but low cost of living
Texas$7.25/hrHouston, Dallas, Austin$580Federal minimum — but many employers pay $12+
Indiana$7.25/hrIndianapolis, Bloomington$580Federal minimum — Purdue area pays $10–$12
Michigan$10.56/hrAnn Arbor, Detroit, Lansing$845UM pays above minimum
Pennsylvania$7.25/hrPhiladelphia, Pittsburgh$580Federal minimum — universities pay $11–$14

Good News

Universities almost always pay above minimum wage. Even in states with $7.25/hr federal minimum (Texas, Indiana, Pennsylvania), most universities set their own campus minimum at $10–$14/hour. For example, Purdue University pays a campus minimum of $12/hour, UT Austin pays $15/hour, and Penn State pays $12.50/hour. When calculating your expected earnings, use the university's campus rate — not the state minimum. Check your university's student employment page for exact hourly rates before you apply.

Students at universities in California, Washington, and New York earn 2–3x more per hour than those in Texas or Indiana — but living costs in high-wage states are also higher. The best value is often in states like Arizona, Illinois, or New Jersey, where wages are decent ($14–$16/hr) and living expenses are moderate. Use EEC's free consultation to compare earnings vs. living costs across university locations.

CPT Internships — Earn $25–$50/Hour in Your Field (2026)

CPT (Curricular Practical Training) is where the real earning power begins. Unlike on-campus jobs that pay $12–$22/hour, CPT internships in your field of study pay $25–$50+/hour — that's $4,000–$8,000/month during full-time summer internships. For Indian students studying computer science, data science, or engineering, CPT internships at tech companies are a major financial boost and a gateway to full-time OPT employment.

How to Get CPT Authorization

1

Complete One Academic Year

You must have been enrolled full-time for at least one academic year (9 months) before becoming eligible for CPT. Exception: graduate programs requiring immediate internships may waive this.

2

Get a Job Offer

Secure an internship or co-op offer from an employer. The position must be directly related to your major field of study. Have the offer letter ready with start/end dates, hours, and job description.

3

Register for Academic Credit

CPT must be part of your academic program — enroll in an internship course or co-op credit at your university. Your academic advisor will help identify the right course number.

4

Request DSO Approval

Submit your offer letter, course registration proof, and CPT request form to your Designated School Official (DSO). Your DSO will update your I-20 with CPT authorization — usually within 1–2 weeks.

5

Start Working (After I-20 Update)

You can ONLY begin working on the start date printed on your updated I-20. Starting even one day early violates your F-1 status. Keep a copy of your CPT-authorized I-20 at all times.

Warning

12+ months of full-time CPT = NO post-completion OPT. This is the most dangerous trap for international students. If you accumulate 12 months or more of full-time CPT (40 hrs/week), you permanently lose eligibility for post-completion OPT. Limit full-time CPT to summer internships (3 months each) — you can do up to 3 summers of full-time CPT (9 months total) and still keep your OPT eligibility. Part-time CPT (20 hrs/week) does NOT count toward this limit, no matter how long you use it.

How to Find Part-Time Jobs in USA as an International Student

Finding part-time jobs in USA for international students requires a different approach than job hunting in India. US universities have dedicated employment systems, and most on-campus positions are never advertised on external job boards. Here's the proven strategy:

1

Check Handshake (University Job Board)

Almost every US university uses Handshake as its primary student employment portal. Log in with your university credentials and filter for "on-campus" positions. Set up job alerts for your preferred roles. This is where 70% of on-campus jobs are posted.

2

Visit Department Offices in Person

Walk into your department office and ask about TA, RA, or grader positions. Many professors hire RAs through word-of-mouth — they never post these roles online. Bring a printed resume and introduce yourself.

3

Email Professors Directly

If you want an RA position, email 5–10 professors whose research interests align with yours. Attach your resume and a short paragraph explaining why you want to work with them. Follow up politely after one week.

4

Check Campus Dining & Facilities

Campus dining halls, coffee shops, bookstores, and recreation centers always have openings. These positions require less experience and hire year-round. Visit in person during the first week of classes.

5

Attend the Campus Job Fair

Most universities hold a job fair in the first 2 weeks of each semester. On-campus employers set up booths and hire on the spot. Bring copies of your resume and dress professionally.

6

Network with Senior Students

Join your university's Indian student association or department-specific clubs. Senior students who are graduating often refer their replacements for campus jobs. This insider network is invaluable.

7

Use LinkedIn for CPT Internships

For CPT internships (after your first year), LinkedIn and Handshake are the primary platforms. Use keywords like "software engineering intern summer 2026" and filter for companies that hire F-1 students.

“I landed a Research Assistant position with a professor at UIUC within 3 weeks of arriving. It paid $16/hour and eventually led to a co-authored publication. EEC told me to email professors before I even arrived — best advice I ever received.”

Monthly Earning Potential — Realistic Calculations for Indian Students

How much can students earn in USA through part-time work? Let's calculate realistic monthly earnings based on actual wage data and F-1 work hour limits:

During Academic Semester (20 hrs/week limit)

During the fall and spring semesters, F-1 students can work a maximum of 20 hours per week on-campus. Here's what that translates to monthly:

← Swipe left to see more columns →

Monthly Earnings During Semester — On-Campus Employment 2026
ScenarioHourly RateHours/WeekMonthly EarningsAnnual (9 months)
Low-wage state (TX, IN)$10–$1215–20$600–$960$5,400–$8,640
Mid-wage state (IL, OH, AZ)$13–$1515–20$780–$1,200$7,020–$10,800
High-wage state (CA, WA, NY)$16–$1815–20$960–$1,440$8,640–$12,960
TA / RA stipend$15–$2215–20$900–$1,760$8,100–$15,840
TA + tuition waiver$15–$22 + waiver15–20$900–$1,760 + tuitionTotal value: $30K–$60K

During Summer & Winter Breaks (40 hrs/week)

During official university breaks (summer, winter, spring break), F-1 students can work up to 40 hours per week on-campus. With CPT authorization, you can also work full-time off-campus internships:

← Swipe left to see more columns →

Summer Earnings — On-Campus vs CPT Internships 2026
Work TypeHourly RateHours/WeekMonthly EarningsSummer Total (3 months)
On-campus (full-time break)$12–$1835–40$1,680–$2,880$5,040–$8,640
CPT internship (engineering)$25–$4040$4,300–$6,900$12,900–$20,700
CPT internship (tech/CS)$35–$5540$6,000–$9,500$18,000–$28,500
CPT internship (business)$22–$3540$3,800–$6,000$11,400–$18,000

Good News

Total annual earnings: $14,000–$45,000+. A CS student at a California university can realistically earn $12,000 during the academic year (on-campus) + $18,000–$28,000 during a summer CPT internship at a tech company = $30,000–$40,000 per year. This can cover 30–60% of your total cost of studying in USA. Students considering a study loan should factor this earning potential into their financial planning.

Tax Rules for International Students Working in USA (2026)

Every international student earning money in USA must understand the tax rules for students. The good news: F-1 students get important tax exemptions that reduce your tax burden significantly. Here's what you need to know:

Key Tax Concepts for F-1 Students

1

You Are a "Non-Resident Alien" (NRA)

For the first 5 calendar years in USA, F-1 students are classified as non-resident aliens for tax purposes. This affects which tax form you file and which deductions you can claim.

2

File Form 1040-NR (Not 1040)

Non-resident aliens file Form 1040-NR, NOT the regular Form 1040 that US citizens use. Use Sprintax (not TurboTax — TurboTax does not support NRA returns) to file your taxes online.

3

FICA Exemption — No Social Security/Medicare Tax

F-1 students are EXEMPT from FICA taxes (Social Security 6.2% + Medicare 1.45% = 7.65%) for the first 5 years. This saves you $765 for every $10,000 you earn. If your employer deducts FICA, request a refund by filing Form 843.

4

Federal Tax Rate: 10–12% on Most Student Income

Most F-1 students earning under $45,000/year fall in the 10–12% federal tax bracket. Your employer will withhold taxes from each paycheck (shown on your W-2 form). You may get a refund when you file your tax return.

5

State Tax Varies (Some States Have No Income Tax)

States like Texas, Florida, Washington, and Nevada have NO state income tax — meaning you keep more of your earnings. States like California (up to 13.3%) and New York (up to 8.82%) add significant state taxes on top of federal taxes.

6

File Every Year — Even with Zero Income

All F-1 students must file Form 8843 every year, even if you earned $0. If you earned any income, also file 1040-NR. The tax deadline is April 15 each year. Late filing can trigger penalties and affect future visa applications.

Pro Tip

Check the India-USA tax treaty (Article 21). Indian students may be eligible for a $5,000 standard deduction under the India-USA tax treaty, reducing your taxable income. This means if you earned $15,000, you'd only pay federal tax on $10,000 — saving approximately $500–$600 in taxes. Mention this treaty benefit when filing with Sprintax. For detailed financial planning including education loan repayment and tax optimization, consult EEC's financial advisors.

Warning

Never use TurboTax or H&R Block as a non-resident alien. These platforms are designed for US citizens and residents. Using them incorrectly can result in filing the wrong tax form (1040 instead of 1040-NR), which is a federal offence. Use Sprintax — it's specifically designed for non-resident alien tax filing and costs $40–$60. Many universities offer free Sprintax access through their international student office.

Understanding part-time jobs in USA for international students goes beyond just finding work — it's about building a strategic plan that maximizes your earnings while staying 100% compliant with F-1 visa rules. From on-campus jobs that pay $12–$22/hour to CPT internships paying $35–$55/hour, the earning potential is real. Choose a university in a high-wage state, target TA/RA positions in your department, build internship experience through CPT, and file your taxes correctly. EEC has guided 50,000+ Indian students through every step of studying and working in USA. Frequently Asked Questions: Part-Time Jobs in USA for Students

Yes, F-1 visa holders can work part-time on-campus for up to 20 hours per week during the academic semester and up to 40 hours per week during official breaks (summer, winter, spring). On-campus employment does not require special authorization from USCIS. You can start working on-campus from day one of your program. EEC provides guidance on finding on-campus jobs at your university.
International students in USA earn $10-$22 per hour from on-campus jobs, translating to $800-$1,800 per month during the semester (20 hrs/week) and $1,600-$3,500 during breaks (40 hrs/week). Annual earnings range from $8,000-$15,000. Tech-related campus jobs like IT support and research assistance pay $15-$22/hour. EEC advises students on maximizing their on-campus earning potential.
On-campus jobs are at your university (library, dining hall, labs, IT department) and require no special work authorization. Off-campus jobs require either CPT (during studies) or OPT (after graduation) authorization from USCIS. Working off-campus without authorization violates your F-1 status and can lead to deportation. EEC strictly advises students to follow all F-1 work regulations.
The federal minimum wage in USA is $7.25/hour, but most states pay significantly more. California pays $16.50/hour, New York $16/hour, Washington $16.66/hour, and Massachusetts $15.50/hour. On-campus student jobs typically pay $2-$5 above the state minimum wage. The actual pay depends on the state, university, and job type. EEC helps students understand cost-of-living and wage comparisons across different US states.
F-1 students can work a maximum of 20 hours per week on-campus during fall and spring semesters when classes are in session. During official school breaks (summer, winter, spring break), you can work up to 40 hours per week. Violating the 20-hour rule can jeopardize your F-1 status and future visa applications. Universities track work hours through their employment systems.
The best summer jobs for international students include on-campus research assistant ($15-$25/hour), university IT support ($14-$20/hour), campus tour guide ($12-$16/hour), library assistant ($12-$15/hour), and CPT internships in your field of study ($20-$40/hour). CPT internships are the most valuable as they provide industry experience, higher pay, and strengthen your resume for OPT employment. EEC connects students with CPT-eligible internship opportunities.
CPT (Curricular Practical Training) allows F-1 students to work off-campus in paid internships or co-ops that are directly related to their field of study. You must complete one academic year before applying for CPT (unless your program requires immediate participation). Your university's international student office issues CPT authorization. EEC advises students on CPT-eligible programs and helps identify internship opportunities.
Yes, all international students in USA who earn income must file federal and state tax returns annually by April 15. Even students with no income must file Form 8843. F-1 students are considered non-resident aliens for tax purposes for their first 5 years and file Form 1040NR. Many universities offer free tax filing assistance through VITA programs. EEC provides basic tax filing guidance to help students understand their obligations.
The highest paying on-campus student jobs include research assistant ($15-$25/hour), tutoring and teaching assistant ($14-$22/hour), IT helpdesk and web development ($15-$22/hour), campus writing center consultant ($13-$18/hour), and resident advisor (free housing + stipend worth $8,000-$12,000/year). Off-campus CPT internships pay $20-$40/hour in tech, finance, and engineering fields.
F-1 students can work off-campus only through authorized programs: CPT (internships during studies), OPT (after graduation), or in cases of severe economic hardship (requires USCIS approval). Unauthorized off-campus employment is illegal and results in F-1 status violation, deportation, and future visa denials. EEC strongly advises students to only pursue authorized work opportunities and maintain their visa compliance.
