After MS in USA: OPT → STEM OPT → H-1B → Green Card Pipeline

Every MS graduate in USA gets 12 months of OPT (Optional Practical Training) work authorization. If your MS is in a STEM field, you get an additional 24-month STEM OPT extension — totaling 3 years of legal work in USA. During your studies, you can also earn $800-$2,500/month through part-time jobs on campus. After OPT, the H-1B work visa is your bridge to permanent residency (green card). Make sure you secure your F-1 visa with proper preparation — note that interview waivers (Dropbox) were eliminated in September 2025, so all applicants must attend in-person consular interviews. Schedule your visa appointment 4-6 months in advance. Here is the complete pipeline:

1

Complete MS Degree

2 years of study. Start applying for jobs 3-6 months before graduation.

2

12-Month OPT

Apply 90 days before graduation. Work for any US employer in your field.

3

24-Month STEM OPT Extension

Apply before OPT expires. Must work for E-Verify employer. Total 3 years.

4

H-1B Visa Application

Employer sponsors you. Annual lottery in March (65,000 + 20,000 master's cap).

5

H-1B Approval (3+3 years)

If selected in lottery, work for 6 years total on H-1B.

6

Green Card (Permanent Residency)

Employer files EB-2/EB-3. Processing time: 3-10 years for Indian nationals.

Frequently Asked Questions: MS in USA

The total cost of an MS in USA ranges from ₹56 Lakhs to ₹1.3 Crore for the full 2-year program. Tuition fees vary from $15,000-$60,000 per year depending on the university. Living expenses add $10,000-$20,000 per year. With TA/RA assistantships, the effective cost can be reduced by 50-100% at many universities.
GRE is not mandatory at many US universities in 2026, with over 350 graduate programs now GRE-optional or GRE-free. However, a strong GRE score (315+) improves admission chances at top-50 universities and can help secure TA/RA funding. EEC recommends taking the GRE if you are targeting competitive programs in Computer Science, Engineering, or Data Science.
The best universities for MS in USA depend on your field. For MS in Computer Science: MIT, Stanford, CMU, UC Berkeley. For MS in Engineering: Georgia Tech, Purdue, University of Michigan. For MS in Data Science: Columbia, NYU, University of Illinois. EEC helps shortlist universities based on your GPA, GRE score, budget, and career goals for the best admit chances.
Yes, over 350 US universities now accept MS applications without GRE, including Northeastern University, Stevens Institute of Technology, Illinois Institute of Technology, and many state universities. Some universities waive GRE for applicants with strong GPAs (3.0+) or relevant work experience. EEC maintains an updated list of GRE-optional MS programs across all specializations.

This is one of the biggest advantages of studying in USA.
