How to Improve PTE from 50 to 65: Australia Competent English 2026
Keyur Rohit
Lead Verbal Faculty for Digital SAT / IELTS / Spoken English / PTE, EEC
Keyur Rohit is EEC's lead verbal-skills faculty across Digital SAT (Reading & Writing module), IELTS (Reading + Writing + Speaking), Spoken English (Fluency tier coaching), and PTE Academic (Reading + Speaking modules). His remit covers band-builder methodology for IELTS 7.0+ (the band-pushed threshold for top universities and Skilled-Worker visas), the College Board's Digital SAT verbal adaptive sections, PTE 79+ Superior-band score targeting (especially for Australia PR PTE-Core CLB 9+), and Spoken English fluency progression for working professionals. He runs both classroom and online-live coaching across EEC's network. As Cambridge English IELTS Pre-Testing Centre (#5319) and IDP IELTS Education Partner, EEC's verbal faculty operates within Cambridge / IDP testing standards.

PTE 65 in each skill is the mandatory minimum for Australia PR (Competent English). If you are currently scoring around 50 on practice tests, the 15-point gap to 65 is absolutely achievable with focused preparation over 8-10 weeks. This guide identifies exactly where students at the 50 level lose marks and provides the specific improvements that close the gap.

Why PTE 65 Matters — It's the Minimum for Australia PR
Without PTE 65 in each of the four communicative skills (Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing), you cannot submit an Expression of Interest (EOI)for Australia's Subclass 189, 190, or 491 skilled visas. PTE 65 earns 0 bonus points but is the non-negotiable entry threshold. Every point below 65 in any single skill blocks your entire immigration application.
Warning

Where Students at PTE 50 Typically Lose Marks
Oral Fluency Issues
Students at PTE 50 typically have frequent pauses, hesitations, and self-corrections in Speaking tasks. The AI penalises gaps longer than 3 seconds. Read Aloud and Repeat Sentence scores are often 40-50 due to choppy delivery.
Spelling Errors in Write from Dictation
At the 50 level, WFD accuracy is typically 40-50% — losing significant points in both Writing and Listening. Common issues: missed words, misspelled content words, missing articles/prepositions.
SWT Formatting Errors
Students write two or more sentences instead of one, or exceed the 75-word limit, resulting in Form score of 0. This is a format error, not a language error — easily fixed with awareness.
Re-order Paragraphs Time Sink
Spending 4-5 minutes per Re-order set steals time from easier, high-scoring items. This reduces overall Reading score through time pressure on Fill in the Blanks.

Speaking Improvements to Add +15 Points
Read Aloud pronunciation drilling: Practice 15 passages daily. Focus on: no pauses longer than 2 seconds, consistent pace (not too fast, not too slow), clear pronunciation of word endings (-ed, -s, -tion). This alone can add 5-8 points to Speaking.
Repeat Sentence memory technique: Focus on content words, start typing immediately, practise 10-15 sentences daily. Aim for 70%+ word accuracy (currently likely 40-50%).
Describe Image template mastery: Memorise the universal template (from our Describe Image guide) and practise 5-10 images daily until the template is automatic.

Book Free ConsultationWriting Improvements
Essay structure template: Memorise the 4-paragraph template (see our Essay guide). At the 50 level, essays often lack clear structure — adopting the template guarantees a Content score of at least 2/3 and a Development score of at least 1/2.
SWT one-sentence technique: Practise writing one sentence with a which/that clause every day. Count words before submitting. See our SWT guide.
Spelling checklist: Create and review a personal spelling hitlist of 30 commonly misspelled words. Correct spelling in WFD and essay can add 5+ points to Writing.
Reading Improvements
Collocation awareness: Daily practice with 10-15 collocation exercises improves Fill in the Blanks accuracy significantly.
Re-order Paragraphs systematic approach: Use the topic sentence → pronoun reference → logical flow method (see our Reading guide). Limit to 2 minutes per set.
Time allocation: Do not spend more than 2 minutes on any single Reading item. Move on to easier items and return if time permits.
Listening Improvements
Write from Dictation — the +10 point secret weapon: Improving WFD from 40% accuracy to 80% accuracy adds approximately 8-12 points to your overall score across Writing and Listening. This is the single highest-impact improvement you can make. Practise 20 sentences daily with perfect spelling focus. See our WFD guide.
Highlight Incorrect Words — avoid clicking correct words: Only click words you are 100% certain differ from the audio. Conservative clicking protects against negative marking losses.
