Summarize Written Text (SWT) is one of PTE's most unique — and most misunderstood — tasks. You read a passage of up to 300 words and write a single sentence summary in 5-75 words within 10 minutes. One sentence. That is it. The challenge is condensing an entire passage into one grammatically perfect, content-rich sentence. This guide teaches the one-sentence strategy that EEC trainers use to help students score consistently.

SWT Scoring Criteria
← Swipe left to see more columns →
| Criteria | Max Points | What It Measures |
|---|---|---|
| Content | 2 | Key points from the passage covered |
| Form | 1 | Single sentence, 5-75 words |
| Grammar | 2 | Correct grammatical structures |
| Vocabulary | 2 | Appropriate and varied word choice |

The One-Sentence Strategy
The key to SWT is using complex sentence structures with subordinate clauses to pack multiple ideas into one grammatically correct sentence. Here is the formula:
Main clause + which/that clause + while/although clause + concluding phrase
Example: "The passage discusses how renewable energy sources, which include solar, wind, and hydroelectric power, are becoming increasingly cost-effective, while traditional fossil fuels face growing environmental regulations and declining public support, ultimately suggesting a global shift toward sustainable energy."
This single sentence: (a) states the topic, (b) provides specific details, (c) adds a contrasting point, and (d) concludes with the passage's main argument — all within 40 words.

Book Free ConsultationSentence Structures That Work
Pattern 1 — Which/That:"The article explains that [main idea], which [elaboration], suggesting that [conclusion]."
Pattern 2 — While/Although:"While [point A], [point B], indicating that [overall conclusion]."
Pattern 3 — Both/And:"The passage highlights both [point A] and [point B], emphasising that [conclusion]."
Pattern 4 — By + gerund:"By discussing [topic], the author demonstrates that [main argument], particularly [specific detail]."
Practise 3-5 SWT responses daily using different patterns. Over a month, you will develop the ability to quickly identify the best structure for any passage.
Step-by-Step Process
Minutes 1-3:Read the passage once completely. Identify the main topic and the author's central argument.
Minutes 3-5: Re-read and identify 3-4 key supporting points. Note any contrasts or conclusions.
Minutes 5-8: Write your sentence using one of the patterns above. Combine the main topic, key points, and conclusion into one sentence.
Minutes 8-10: Proofread for grammar, spelling, and word count. Ensure there is only ONE full stop at the end. Check that word count is 5-75.
Common SWT Mistakes
1. Writing two sentences: Any additional full stop = two sentences = Form score of 0.
2. Exceeding 75 words: The AI counts words. Going to 76 words = Form score of 0.
3. Copying text verbatim: Paraphrase the passage content. Direct copying reduces your Vocabulary score.
4. Missing the main idea:Some students summarise minor details while missing the passage's central argument. Always identify the thesis first.
5. Grammar errors in complex clauses: Complex sentences are powerful but risky. If you are unsure about clause construction, use a simpler structure with fewer clauses — correct grammar outweighs complexity.
Practice Tips
Practice with newspaper articles and academic summaries. Read a 200-300 word passage, then write a single-sentence summary within 8 minutes. Check word count (30-50 target) and grammar. EEC provides a bank of SWT practice passages with model answers. See also our Essay Tips guide for the other Writing task.
EEC SWT Coaching
EEC's coaching programme includes dedicated SWT practice with trainer-reviewed model answers, sentence structure workshops, and timed practice drills. SWT is a skill that improves rapidly with structured practice — most students see consistent scoring within 2-3 weeks.
“SWT is the most underestimated item in PTE. One grammatically perfect sentence, 30-40 words, covering the main idea — that is all the AI needs to give you full marks.”
