IELTS vs PTE is the most common dilemma Indian students face when choosing an English proficiency test. Both are accepted by thousands of universities and immigration authorities worldwide, but they differ significantly in format, scoring method, and test-taking experience. IELTS uses a human examiner for Speaking and hand-scored Writing, while PTE Academic is entirely computer-scored. This fundamental difference means some students naturally perform better on one test than the other. This guide provides a side-by-side comparison of everything that matters: format, scoring, difficulty for Indian students, acceptance by country, score conversion, fees, and result timelines. All data is verified as of February 2026.

Test Format Comparison — How Each Test Works
IELTS has four clearly separated sections: Listening (30 min), Reading (60 min), Writing (60 min), and Speaking (11–14 min face-to-face). On Computer-Delivered IELTS, Listening, Reading, and Writing are done on a computer, but Speaking is still a live interview with a human examiner. The test is straightforward — each section tests one skill at a time. This makes IELTS intuitive for most test-takers.
PTE Academic has a fundamentally different structure with three parts: Speaking & Writing (54–67 min), Reading (29–30 min), and Listening (30–43 min). Critically, PTE uses integrated task types where one task may test multiple skills simultaneously. For example, “Re-tell Lecture” tests both listening and speaking, while “Summarize Written Text” tests both reading and writing. The Speaking section is recorded through a microphone in a test center (with other candidates speaking nearby) and scored by an AI algorithm. Writing is also AI-scored. There are approximately 20 different question types across the three parts, including Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image, Re-tell Lecture, Essay, Fill in the Blanks, and Highlight Correct Summary.

Scoring Systems — IELTS Bands vs PTE Points
IELTS scores each section on a 0–9 band scale in half-band increments (e.g., 5.5, 6.0, 6.5, 7.0), and the overall band is the average of the four sections, rounded to the nearest half band. PTE Academic scores each section on a 10–90 point scale in 1-point increments, giving much finer granularity. PTE also provides scores for “enabling skills” (Grammar, Oral Fluency, Pronunciation, Spelling, Vocabulary, Written Discourse) that contribute to the overall scores but are not individually required by most institutions.
The finer granularity of PTE scoring is both an advantage and a challenge. On the positive side, a 1-point improvement in PTE is more incremental than a 0.5-band jump in IELTS, so progress feels more continuous. On the negative side, AI scoring in PTE can feel unpredictable — the same response might receive slightly different scores on different attempts because the AI evaluates multiple parameters simultaneously. IELTS human scoring, while subjective, follows clearly published band descriptors that both the student and examiner can reference. IELTS also offers One Skill Retake (OSR) for computer-delivered tests.

Which Is Easier for Indian Students?
There is no universal answer — it depends on your individual strengths. Based on EEC's experience coaching thousands of students for both tests, here are the general patterns we observe among Indian students:
← Swipe left to see more columns →
| Aspect | Easier on IELTS | Easier on PTE |
|---|---|---|
| Speaking | Students who are conversational, expressive, can think on their feet | Students with clear pronunciation, consistent pace, who prefer no human interaction |
| Writing | Students who write fluently and expressively (human evaluation) | Students who follow templates strictly (AI evaluates structure & keywords) |
| Reading | Relatively similar difficulty | Slightly easier for fast readers (integrated tasks save time) |
| Listening | Clearer audio, slower pace, one-time playback | Accents can vary; integrated tasks require multitasking |
| Scoring Consistency | Human scoring: consistent but subjective | AI scoring: objective but can feel unpredictable |
| Band 7+ / PTE 65+ | Harder in Writing (human evaluators are strict at Band 7) | Some students find it easier to reach PTE 65 with template strategies |
| Band 8+ / PTE 79+ | Very difficult in Writing and Speaking | Very difficult across all sections |
General rule of thumb: If you are a natural communicator who can engage in live conversation, handle unexpected questions, and write expressively, IELTS may suit you better. If you prefer structured, predictable question types, have clear pronunciation, and are comfortable with computer-based testing, PTE may be your stronger option. At EEC, we offer a free diagnostic test that assesses your aptitude for both formats and recommends the better fit.

How to Choose — IELTS or PTE
Choose IELTS if: You are applying to the UK (UKVI requires IELTS), you prefer speaking to a human examiner, you write expressively and want human evaluation, you want the OSR option, or your target institutions specifically require IELTS. Choose PTE if: You need results urgently (48 hours vs. 3–13 days), you prefer computer-based speaking (no human interaction), you are targeting Australia (PTE is very popular there), or you want unlimited free score reports. Not sure? Take a diagnostic test for both at EEC and compare your scores.
