You have prepared for weeks. You have mastered the new TOEFL format and understand the 1-6 band scoring scale. Now it is TOEFL exam day — and knowing what to expect can make the difference between your best performance and a stressful experience. The new TOEFL format launched January 21, 2026 changed the section order, timing, and question types significantly. This guide from EEC's TOEFL coaching experts walks you through everything: a complete pre-test checklist, what to bring, the test centre experience, section-by-section timing, break policies, anxiety management, and what happens after you finish. With 27+ years of experience and 50,000+ students guided through TOEFL test days, EEC knows every detail that matters.
Before Test Day: Complete Checklist
One Week Before
Confirm your registration: Log into your ETS account and verify your test date, time, centre address, and registered name. Print or screenshot your registration confirmation — you may need the registration number at the centre. Verify your passport: Ensure your passport is valid (not expired) and that the name on it exactly matches your ETS registration name (first name, last name, middle name — every character). Do a final practice test: Take one full-length practice test under timed conditions to build confidence and identify any last-minute weak areas. Review our preparation tips.
The Night Before
Get 7-8 hours of sleep — cognitive performance drops significantly with less than 6 hours. Prepare your test-day items the night before: passport, registration confirmation (printed or on phone), a clear water bottle (some centres allow it), and comfortable clothing in layers (test rooms can be cold). Do NOT cram the night before — light review of strategies is fine, but intensive study the night before increases anxiety without meaningfully improving performance.
Test Day Morning
Eat a balanced breakfast with protein and complex carbohydrates — you need sustained energy for a ~2-hour test. Avoid heavy, greasy food that can make you drowsy. Drink water but not too much (bathroom breaks during the test are limited). Leave for the test centre with plenty of time — arriving late means you cannot take the test and forfeit your fee. Find your nearest test centre.

Pro Tip
What to Bring to the TOEFL Test Centre
The single most important item is your valid passport. ETS requires a passport as the primary ID for all TOEFL test-takers in India — no other ID (Aadhaar card, PAN card, driving licence, voter ID) is accepted. Your passport must be valid (not expired) and the name on it must match your registration exactly. If your passport is being renewed, do NOT schedule the test until you have the new passport in hand.

| Item | Required? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Valid Passport | ✅ Required | Must match registration name exactly |
| Registration Confirmation | 📋 Recommended | Print or screenshot with registration number |
| Clear Water Bottle | 🔄 Varies by centre | Some centres allow, some don't |
| Snack | ❌ Not allowed inside | Eat before arriving; store in locker if available |
| Mobile Phone | ❌ Must be turned off | Store in locker; not accessible during test |
| Watch / Smartwatch | ❌ Not allowed | Clock is on the computer screen |
| Notes / Books | ❌ Not allowed | Centre provides scratch paper or whiteboard |
| Jacket / Sweater | ✅ Recommended | Test rooms are often cold |
Warning
Arriving at the Test Centre
Arrive at the test centre at least 30 minutes before your scheduled start time. The check-in process includes: (1) presenting your passport for identity verification, (2) signing a non-disclosure agreement on a computer, (3) having your photograph taken, (4) storing personal items in a locker or designated area, and (5) being escorted to your assigned computer workstation. The centre staff will provide scratch paper or an erasable whiteboard and marker for notes during the test. Headphones with a built-in microphone will be at your workstation for the Listening and Speaking sections.
Most Indian TOEFL test centres are air-conditioned, quiet environments with individual workstation cubicles. You will be seated alongside other test-takers who may be at different stages of their test. Expect some background noise — typing sounds, people speaking during their Speaking section, and occasional movement. This is normal and something to prepare for during your practice sessions. EEC's practice tests simulate realistic test-centre conditions.
EEC students receive a detailed test-centre guide specific to their booked centre — including directions, parking, check-in process, and what to expect. Our 27+ years of experience means we know every major Indian test centre.
Book Free ConsultationNew TOEFL Format: Section Order & Timing
The new TOEFL format follows a fixed section order. Understanding the sequence helps you mentally prepare and allocate your energy across the ~2-hour test. The four sections are always delivered in this order:
← Swipe left to see more columns →
| Order | Section | Duration | Items | Key Features |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | Reading | 18-27 min | 35-48 | Adaptive (Module 1 → Module 2) |
| 2nd | Listening | 18-27 min | 35-45 | Adaptive (Module 1 → Module 2) |
| — | Optional Break | ~5 min | — | Varies by centre |
| 3rd | Writing | 23 min | 12 | Build a Sentence + Email + Discussion |
| 4th | Speaking | 8 min | 11 | Listen & Repeat + Interview |
| — | TOTAL | ~2 hours | ~120 | Including check-in, ~2.5 hrs at centre |
Good News
Note that Reading and Listening are computer-adaptive — the difficulty of Module 2 adjusts based on your performance in Module 1. If you feel Module 2 is harder, that is actually a good sign — it means you performed well in Module 1 and are being given harder questions that lead to a higher band score. Do not panic if Module 2 feels more challenging. Understand how adaptive scoring works.
Break Policy in the New Format
The new TOEFL format includes an optional break of approximately 5 minutes between the Listening and Writing sections (between sections 2 and 3). This break is shorter than the old format's 10-minute break, reflecting the shorter overall test duration. During the break, you can stretch, have a sip of water (if your centre allows it in the room), and use the restroom. You must remain in the centre and return to your seat promptly when the timer ends.
Pro Tip
Time Management During the Test
Reading & Listening (Adaptive Sections)
In the adaptive Reading and Listening sections, you cannot go back to previous questions once you advance. This means do not leave questions blank hoping to return — answer every question before moving forward. Pace yourself using the on-screen timer. For Reading, allocate roughly equal time per passage. For Listening, you cannot control the audio speed, so focus on taking efficient notes on your whiteboard and answering promptly after each audio segment.
Writing Section (23 Minutes Total)
The Writing section has three parts: Build a Sentence (quick, ~3-5 minutes), Write an Email (7 minutes), and Academic Discussion (10 minutes). The tightest time constraint is the email — 7 minutes goes fast, so have a mental template ready: greeting, 2-3 body sentences addressing the prompt, and a closing. For the Academic Discussion, spend 1-2 minutes reading the prompt and planning, then write for 7-8 minutes. See our Writing section strategies.
Speaking Section (8 Minutes Total)
The Speaking section is the shortest but most nerve-wracking for many Indian students. Listen and Repeat (7 sentences) requires you to listen carefully and reproduce the sentence accurately — focus on pronunciation, rhythm, and completeness. The Interview (4 questions, 45 seconds each) requires natural, confident responses. Do not memorise scripts — instead, practise speaking naturally about common topics like campus life, daily routines, and academic interests. Master the Speaking section.
EEC TOEFL Mock Tests — New Format — Take full-length, timed mock tests under realistic conditions — adaptive Reading/Listening, new Writing tasks, and recorded Speaking. Detailed score feedback within 48 hours.
Managing Test Anxiety on TOEFL Day
Test anxiety is completely normal — even top-scoring students feel nervous. The key is managing it so it does not affect your performance. Physical symptoms (racing heart, sweaty palms, tight chest) are your body's fight-or-flight response and can be managed with simple techniques. Mental symptoms (blanking out, racing thoughts, negative self-talk) respond well to cognitive strategies that EEC coaches teach in every batch.
Before the test: Take 5 slow, deep breaths (4 seconds in, hold 4 seconds, 4 seconds out) while waiting for check-in. Remind yourself of your preparation — you have practised for this. During the test: If you encounter a difficult question, do not spiral — answer your best guess and move on. One hard question will not ruin your score; spending 5 minutes panicking will. Between sections: Use the break to physically reset — stretch your shoulders, unclench your jaw, relax your hands.
“The students who score highest on test day aren't always the ones with the most knowledge — they're the ones who manage their nerves best. We spend time in every EEC batch teaching anxiety management techniques that are just as important as grammar and vocabulary.”
— Dr. Sneha Joshi, Head TOEFL Trainer, EEC Ahmedabad
Warning
After the Test: 72-Hour Results
After completing all four sections, you will see a screen asking whether you want to report or cancel your scores. If you felt you performed reasonably well, choose to report. If you had a truly terrible experience (illness, severe anxiety, technical issues), you can cancel — but you will not see your scores, and the fee is not refunded. Most students should report their scores — you may have performed better than you think.
Official scores are available in your ETS account within 72 hours — a massive improvement over the old format's 4-8 day wait. Scores are also sent to the universities you selected during registration. Your score report includes: (1) your overall band score (1-6), (2) individual section band scores, (3) the old 0-120 equivalent scores (during the transition period through January 2028), and (4) your MyBest scores combining your best section scores from all TOEFL tests in the past 2 years. If your score falls short of your target, consider whether switching to IELTS or retaking TOEFL might be the better strategy — EEC counsellors can advise based on your section-wise score breakdown.
