The new TOEFL scoring 1-6 scale is the most significant change in how TOEFL results are reported since the test began in 1964. Effective January 21, 2026, the familiar 0-120 scoring system is replaced by a 1-6 band scale with 0.5 increments — conceptually similar to IELTS band scoring but calibrated specifically for TOEFL. Students considering PTE Academic will also find the conversion tables below helpful. If you are a student preparing for the new TOEFL iBT, understanding this scoring system is essential for setting the right target and interpreting your results. Check the TOEFL fee and registration guide once you are ready to book your test. Here, EEC's TOEFL experts explain every detail of the new scoring, with conversion tables for old TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, and DET.

How the New 1-6 Band Scale Works

Each of the four TOEFL sections (Reading, Listening, Writing, Speaking) is scored individually on a scale of 1.0 to 6.0, in 0.5 increments. This means your section score can be 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, 5.0, 5.5, or 6.0. There are 11 possible score levels per section.

TOEFL New Band Descriptors (1-6 Scale)
BandLevel DescriptionWhat It Means
6.0Expert UserComplete command of academic English — university-ready at any level
5.5Very Good UserStrong command — comfortable in academic settings with occasional errors
5.0Good UserCompetent — handles academic work well with some limitations
4.5Competent UserAdequate — can function in academic settings with noticeable gaps
4.0Limited UserBasic competence — requires support in academic contexts
3.5Very Limited UserPartial command — struggles with complex academic content
3.0Basic UserMinimal working knowledge — significant limitations
2.0-2.5Below BasicVery limited ability — not ready for academic study in English
1.0-1.5Non-UserEssentially no functional ability in English

Per-Section Scoring Breakdown

Each section uses different scoring criteria aligned with the new question types introduced in the January 2026 format change:

Reading (Adaptive)

Your Reading band is determined by the adaptive algorithm. Performance in Module 1 determines Module 2 difficulty. Higher-difficulty questions in Module 2 allow you to reach Band 5.0+. Correct answers in both modules are weighted by difficulty level.

Listening (Adaptive)

Same adaptive mechanism as Reading. Module 2 difficulty adjusts based on Module 1 performance. Band is calculated from weighted accuracy across both modules.

Writing (Human + AI Scoring)

Build a Sentence is scored automatically (correct/incorrect arrangement). Write an Email and Write for Academic Discussion are scored by a combination of AI scoring and human raters, evaluating task completion, coherence, grammar, and vocabulary range. For task-specific strategies, see our new Writing section tips.

Speaking (Human + AI Scoring)

Listen and Repeat is scored using speech recognition technology assessing pronunciation accuracy, fluency, and intonation. Take an Interview responses are scored by AI and human raters evaluating content relevance, fluency, pronunciation, and grammar. Practise with our Speaking section tips for the new format.

Pro Tip

In the new adaptive sections, getting Module 1 right is crucial. Strong Module 1 performance unlocks harder Module 2 questions — which are worth more towards a higher band score. Focus your preparation on consistency in early questions rather than rushing.

How Your Overall Band Is Calculated

Your overall TOEFL band score is simply the average of your four section scores, rounded to the nearest 0.5. For example: Reading 5.0 + Listening 4.5 + Writing 4.0 + Speaking 4.5 = 18.0 ÷ 4 = 4.5 overall. Another example: Reading 5.0 + Listening 5.0 + Writing 4.5 + Speaking 5.0 = 19.5 ÷ 4 = 4.875, rounded to 5.0 overall.

Good News

The averaging system means one weak section doesn't tank your entire score the way it did with the old 0-120 system. A Band 3.5 in Writing can be partially offset by Band 5.0 in Reading and Listening. Focus on maximising your strongest sections while maintaining minimum thresholds in weaker ones.

Most universities are currently in the process of updating their published requirements to the new band scale. During the transition period, your score report includes both scales so admissions offices can evaluate using whichever scale they currently list. You can study in the USA, study in Canada, or study in Germany with a strong TOEFL band. For specific university requirements, see our guides: USA, Canada, Germany.

The 2-Year Transition Period (Jan 2026 — Jan 2028)

ETS has implemented a 2-year transition period running from January 2026 to January 2028. During this time, every TOEFL score report automatically includes BOTH the new 1-6 band score AND a comparable old 0-120 score. This dual-reporting ensures that universities, immigration authorities, and employers can evaluate scores regardless of which scale they currently use.

After January 2028, score reports will show only the new 1-6 band scale. By that point, all institutions are expected to have updated their published requirements to the new scale.

Warning

Even though both scores appear on reports during the transition, you should familiarise yourself with the new band scale now. Set your targets in the new bands and understand what each band level means for your university applications. EEC helps you set the right band target.

How to Maximise Your Band Score

1. Master the adaptive sections. Reading and Listening are adaptive — strong Module 1 performance unlocks harder but higher-scoring Module 2 content. Focus on accuracy in early questions. Reading tips | Listening tips.

2. Target your weakest section. Since the overall is an average, improving your weakest section by 0.5 bands has the same effect as improving your strongest. Focus on quick wins.

3. Practice new question types specifically. Complete the Words, Build a Sentence, Write an Email, Listen and Repeat, Take an Interview — each requires specific preparation. Find the best TOEFL coaching in India or see our full preparation guide.

4. Take timed mock tests in the new format. EEC provides full-length new-format mock tests with band-score predictions so you know exactly where you stand before test day. Review our exam day tips and TOEFL Home Edition guide to decide your testing mode.

“The new band scale rewards consistency. A student who scores 4.5 across all four sections beats a student who scores 6.0 in one section but 3.0 in another. Balance your preparation.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Each of the four sections (Reading, Listening, Writing, Speaking) is scored on a 1-6 scale in 0.5 increments. Your overall TOEFL score is the average of your four section scores. For example, if you score R:5.0, L:4.5, W:5.0, S:4.5, your overall is 4.75, rounded to 5.0.
Key conversions: Old 114-120 = Band 6.0, Old 107-113 = Band 5.5, Old 95-106 = Band 5.0, Old 83-94 = Band 4.5, Old 72-82 = Band 4.0, Old 60-71 = Band 3.5, Old 42-59 = Band 3.0. During 2026-2028, score reports include both scales.
For top 20 US universities, aim for Band 5.0+ (equivalent to old 95+). State universities typically require Band 4.0-4.5 (old 72-94). Community colleges accept Band 3.0-3.5 (old 42-71). Always check specific university requirements as they vary.
Yes. Each section (Reading, Listening, Writing, Speaking) receives an individual 1-6 band score in 0.5 increments. Some universities require minimum section scores in addition to the overall band. For example, a university may require overall 4.5 with no section below 4.0.
Yes, universities are transitioning to the new 1-6 scale. During the 2-year transition period (2026-2028), ETS provides score reports with both old 0-120 and new 1-6 scores, so universities can evaluate using either scale until they fully adopt the new system.
The overall TOEFL band is the arithmetic average of your four section scores, rounded to the nearest 0.5. For example: R:4.5 + L:5.0 + W:4.0 + S:4.5 = 18.0 ÷ 4 = 4.5 overall. If the average falls between bands, it rounds to the nearest 0.5.
No. TOEFL Band 5.0 is approximately equivalent to old TOEFL 95-106, which corresponds to IELTS 7.0-7.5. The TOEFL 1-6 scale is not directly comparable to the IELTS 1-9 scale. TOEFL Band 4.5 ≈ IELTS 6.5, TOEFL Band 4.0 ≈ IELTS 6.0.
The minimum possible TOEFL band score is 1.0 and the maximum is 6.0 for each section and overall. A score of 1.0 indicates very limited English ability, while 6.0 indicates advanced proficiency comparable to a well-educated native speaker.
Yes. ETS provides an official conversion table on their website mapping old 0-120 section and total scores to the new 1-6 band equivalents. During 2026-2028, every score report automatically includes both the new band score and the old 0-120 equivalent.
TOEFL scores remain valid for 2 years from the test date, the same as before the format change. Scores from the new 1-6 format and remaining valid old 0-120 scores are both accepted by universities during the transition period.
