The new TOEFL scoring 1-6 scale is the most significant change in how TOEFL results are reported since the test began in 1964. Effective January 21, 2026, the familiar 0-120 scoring system is replaced by a 1-6 band scale with 0.5 increments — conceptually similar to IELTS band scoring but calibrated specifically for TOEFL. Students considering PTE Academic will also find the conversion tables below helpful. If you are a student preparing for the new TOEFL iBT, understanding this scoring system is essential for setting the right target and interpreting your results. Check the TOEFL fee and registration guide once you are ready to book your test. Here, EEC's TOEFL experts explain every detail of the new scoring, with conversion tables for old TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, and DET.
How the New 1-6 Band Scale Works
Each of the four TOEFL sections (Reading, Listening, Writing, Speaking) is scored individually on a scale of 1.0 to 6.0, in 0.5 increments. This means your section score can be 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, 5.0, 5.5, or 6.0. There are 11 possible score levels per section.

| Band | Level Description | What It Means |
|---|---|---|
| 6.0 | Expert User | Complete command of academic English — university-ready at any level |
| 5.5 | Very Good User | Strong command — comfortable in academic settings with occasional errors |
| 5.0 | Good User | Competent — handles academic work well with some limitations |
| 4.5 | Competent User | Adequate — can function in academic settings with noticeable gaps |
| 4.0 | Limited User | Basic competence — requires support in academic contexts |
| 3.5 | Very Limited User | Partial command — struggles with complex academic content |
| 3.0 | Basic User | Minimal working knowledge — significant limitations |
| 2.0-2.5 | Below Basic | Very limited ability — not ready for academic study in English |
| 1.0-1.5 | Non-User | Essentially no functional ability in English |
Per-Section Scoring Breakdown
Each section uses different scoring criteria aligned with the new question types introduced in the January 2026 format change:
Reading (Adaptive)
Your Reading band is determined by the adaptive algorithm. Performance in Module 1 determines Module 2 difficulty. Higher-difficulty questions in Module 2 allow you to reach Band 5.0+. Correct answers in both modules are weighted by difficulty level.
Listening (Adaptive)
Same adaptive mechanism as Reading. Module 2 difficulty adjusts based on Module 1 performance. Band is calculated from weighted accuracy across both modules.
Writing (Human + AI Scoring)
Build a Sentence is scored automatically (correct/incorrect arrangement). Write an Email and Write for Academic Discussion are scored by a combination of AI scoring and human raters, evaluating task completion, coherence, grammar, and vocabulary range. For task-specific strategies, see our new Writing section tips.
Speaking (Human + AI Scoring)
Listen and Repeat is scored using speech recognition technology assessing pronunciation accuracy, fluency, and intonation. Take an Interview responses are scored by AI and human raters evaluating content relevance, fluency, pronunciation, and grammar. Practise with our Speaking section tips for the new format.
Pro Tip
How Your Overall Band Is Calculated
Your overall TOEFL band score is simply the average of your four section scores, rounded to the nearest 0.5. For example: Reading 5.0 + Listening 4.5 + Writing 4.0 + Speaking 4.5 = 18.0 ÷ 4 = 4.5 overall. Another example: Reading 5.0 + Listening 5.0 + Writing 4.5 + Speaking 5.0 = 19.5 ÷ 4 = 4.875, rounded to 5.0 overall.

Most universities are currently in the process of updating their published requirements to the new band scale. During the transition period, your score report includes both scales so admissions offices can evaluate using whichever scale they currently list. You can study in the USA, study in Canada, or study in Germany with a strong TOEFL band. For specific university requirements, see our guides: USA, Canada, Germany.
The 2-Year Transition Period (Jan 2026 — Jan 2028)
ETS has implemented a 2-year transition period running from January 2026 to January 2028. During this time, every TOEFL score report automatically includes BOTH the new 1-6 band score AND a comparable old 0-120 score. This dual-reporting ensures that universities, immigration authorities, and employers can evaluate scores regardless of which scale they currently use.
After January 2028, score reports will show only the new 1-6 band scale. By that point, all institutions are expected to have updated their published requirements to the new scale.

1. Master the adaptive sections. Reading and Listening are adaptive — strong Module 1 performance unlocks harder but higher-scoring Module 2 content. Focus on accuracy in early questions. Reading tips | Listening tips.
2. Target your weakest section. Since the overall is an average, improving your weakest section by 0.5 bands has the same effect as improving your strongest. Focus on quick wins.
3. Practice new question types specifically. Complete the Words, Build a Sentence, Write an Email, Listen and Repeat, Take an Interview — each requires specific preparation. Find the best TOEFL coaching in India or see our full preparation guide.
4. Take timed mock tests in the new format. EEC provides full-length new-format mock tests with band-score predictions so you know exactly where you stand before test day. Review our exam day tips and TOEFL Home Edition guide to decide your testing mode.
“The new band scale rewards consistency. A student who scores 4.5 across all four sections beats a student who scores 6.0 in one section but 3.0 in another. Balance your preparation.”
