TOEFL vs IELTS has always been the #1 question Indian students ask when preparing for study abroad. But the new TOEFL format launched January 21, 2026 changes the calculus completely. The TOEFL is now shorter (~2 hours vs ~2 hours 45 min for IELTS), uses a new 1-6 band scale (similar to IELTS), has no essay section, and features adaptive technology. Meanwhile, IELTS remains unchanged. So which test is easier in 2026? Which should Indian students choose for the USA, Canada, or Germany? EEC's test prep experts — who coach both tests at 26 centres — present this comprehensive post-format-change comparison.

Test Format: Key Differences Post-2026
The most dramatic difference is in Writing and Speaking. IELTS still requires a 250+ word essay (Task 2), while the new TOEFL has eliminated the essay entirely — see our TOEFL writing tips for the new format. For Indian students who dread essay writing, TOEFL is now the clear winner. However, IELTS Speaking is face-to-face with a human examiner, while TOEFL Speaking is to a computer — our TOEFL speaking tips help you master the computer-based format.
In Reading and Listening, the new TOEFL is adaptive while IELTS remains linear. This means TOEFL adjusts difficulty to your level, while IELTS gives every test-taker the same questions. For stronger students, TOEFL's adaptive format provides a more accurate (and potentially higher) score. For weaker students, the adaptive format prevents wasting time on questions that are too difficult.
Reading section comparison: The new TOEFL Reading features three question types — Complete the Words (fill in missing letters in a passage), Read in Daily Life (practical reading comprehension), and Read Academic Passage (traditional academic reading). Total time is 18-27 minutes depending on the adaptive path. IELTS Reading, by contrast, gives you 3 long passages with 40 questions in 60 minutes — significantly longer and more demanding on stamina. Students who are fast, focused readers may prefer the shorter TOEFL format, while students who benefit from more time per question may prefer the consistent IELTS pace. Check our TOEFL Reading tips for adaptive strategies.
Listening section comparison: TOEFL Listening is also adaptive (18-27 minutes, 35-45 items) with three task types — Listen and Choose Response, Conversation, and Announcements and Academic Talks. IELTS Listening is 30 minutes with 40 questions across 4 sections, featuring British, Australian, and international accents. One key difference: TOEFL Listening uses only North American English accents, while IELTS deliberately uses a range of international accents. If you are more comfortable with American English (common for Indian students who consume US media), TOEFL Listening is typically easier. See our TOEFL Listening guide for detailed strategies.
Preparation differences: Because TOEFL is entirely computer-based and features adaptive technology, preparation should focus on computer-based practice with timed sections. IELTS preparation can include both computer and paper-based practice. At EEC, trainers design preparation paths based on which test you choose — TOEFL students practise with adaptive mock tests, while IELTS students work with full-length linear practice papers. Both programmes are 6 weeks and cost ₹7,500. Our TOEFL preparation tips provide a complete study plan for the new format.

Scoring: New TOEFL Bands vs IELTS Bands

| New TOEFL Band | IELTS Band | Old TOEFL (0-120) | CEFR |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6.0 | 9.0 | 114-120 | C2 |
| 5.5 | 8.0-8.5 | 107-113 | C1+ |
| 5.0 | 7.0-7.5 | 95-106 | C1 |
| 4.5 | 6.5 | 83-94 | B2+ |
| 4.0 | 6.0 | 72-82 | B2 |
| 3.5 | 5.5 | 60-71 | B1+ |
| 3.0 | 4.5-5.0 | 42-59 | B1 |
Notice that TOEFL Band 4.5 ≈ IELTS 6.5 and TOEFL Band 5.0 ≈ IELTS 7.0. Both scoring systems now use bands with 0.5 increments, making comparison much more intuitive than the old 0-120 system. See our complete scoring guide. You can also compare with the TOEFL vs DET comparison if you are considering Duolingo.
Results Speed: TOEFL Wins
The new TOEFL delivers results in 72 hours — that is 3 days. IELTS computer-based takes 3-5 business days, and paper-based takes 13 calendar days. For students on tight application deadlines, TOEFL's faster turnaround is a significant advantage. Check the TOEFL fee and registration guide and exam day tips to plan your test schedule efficiently.

Warning
Which Is Easier After the New Format Change?
For students who struggle with essay writing: TOEFL is now easier — no essay required. The new email and discussion tasks are much shorter and more manageable.
For students who prefer human interaction in Speaking: IELTS is easier — you speak with a real person. TOEFL Speaking is recorded to a computer, which some students find unnatural.
For students who want a shorter test: TOEFL wins at ~2 hours vs IELTS at ~2 hours 45 min.
For students who want at-home testing: TOEFL is the only option — TOEFL Home Edition lets you test from home. You can also find the nearest TOEFL test centre in India if you prefer a centre-based experience. IELTS requires a test centre visit.
For students who are strong in all sections: TOEFL's adaptive format may produce a more accurately high score, while IELTS's linear format treats all students identically. Our TOEFL preparation tips and coaching guide help you maximise your new-format score.
“After the January 2026 format change, TOEFL is genuinely easier for most Indian students — no essay, shorter test, faster results. But the right choice still depends on your target country and personal strengths.”
