The TOEFL iBT underwent its biggest transformation in 60 years on January 21, 2026 — and if you are an Indian student planning to study in the USA, Canada, or Germany, this complete guide is your definitive resource. The new TOEFL iBT 2026 is shorter (~2 hours instead of ~3), uses a revolutionary 1-6 band scoring scale replacing the old 0-120, features adaptive Reading and Listening sections, and eliminates the dreaded independent essay entirely. At EEC, with 27+ years of experience and 50,000+ students placed, our trainers have already mastered every new question type. Here is everything Indian students need to know about the TOEFL iBT 2026 — from format and fees to preparation strategy and score requirements.
What Is TOEFL iBT?
The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) Internet-Based Test (iBT) is the world's most widely accepted English proficiency exam for university admissions, created and administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS). Accepted by over 12,000 institutions in 160+ countries, TOEFL iBT is the gold standard for USA university admissions — with nearly every American university accepting TOEFL scores. It measures academic English proficiency across four skills: Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking.
For Indian students, TOEFL is particularly important because the USA is the #1 study abroad destination, and TOEFL remains the preferred English test for US universities. While IELTS, PTE Academic, and Duolingo have gained acceptance, TOEFL is accepted by more US institutions than any other English test. Not sure which test suits you? See our TOEFL vs IELTS comparison. The new format makes TOEFL faster, fairer, and more accessible than ever before.

New TOEFL iBT Format Overview — January 21, 2026
On January 21, 2026, ETS launched the most radical overhaul in TOEFL history. The new TOEFL format is shorter, smarter, and more practical. Gone are the lengthy 700-word academic passages, the 300-word independent essay, and the complex integrated tasks. In their place: adaptive modules, real-world email writing, interview-style speaking, and sentence-building exercises that better reflect how English is actually used in university settings.

Section-by-Section Breakdown
Reading Section (18-27 minutes, 35-48 items)
The Reading section is now computer-adaptive, meaning the difficulty adjusts based on your performance. It features three new question types: Complete the Words (fill in missing letters in a passage), Read in Daily Life (practical texts like campus notices, schedules), and Read Academic Passage (shorter academic texts than the old format). The adaptive module system means stronger readers face harder questions — leading to more accurate scoring. Get detailed Reading section tips.
Listening Section (18-27 minutes, 35-45 items)
Also computer-adaptive, the new Listening section includes Listen and Choose Response (select the best reply to a statement), Conversation (campus-based dialogues), and Announcements & Academic Talks (shorter lecture-style content). The adaptive nature means Module 2 adjusts based on Module 1 performance. See Listening section strategies.
Writing Section (23 minutes, 12 items)
This is where the biggest changes happened. The old independent essay (300+ words, 30 minutes) is completely gone. In its place: Build a Sentence (unscramble mixed-up sentences), Write an Email (7 minutes — compose a practical email), and Write for Academic Discussion (10 minutes — contribute to a discussion board). These tasks are shorter, more practical, and far less intimidating than the old essay format. Master the new Writing section.
Speaking Section (8 minutes, 11 items)
The old integrated speaking tasks (read a passage, listen to a lecture, then speak) are eliminated entirely. The new Speaking section has just two parts: Listen and Repeat (7 sentences about daily/campus topics — repeat what you hear) and Take an Interview (4 questions, 45 seconds each — answer naturally). This is much more like a real conversation. Get Speaking section tips.

Book Free ConsultationNew 1-6 Band Scoring Scale
The old 0-120 scoring scale is history. The new TOEFL uses a 1-6 band scale with 0.5 increments for each section. Your overall score is the average of the four section scores. Band 5.0 on the new scale is approximately equivalent to 95-106 on the old 0-120 scale.

| New Band | Description | Old 0-120 Equivalent | IELTS Equivalent |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6.0 | Expert | 114-120 | 9.0 |
| 5.5 | Very Good | 107-113 | 8.0-8.5 |
| 5.0 | Good | 95-106 | 7.0-7.5 |
| 4.5 | Competent | 83-94 | 6.5 |
| 4.0 | Limited | 72-82 | 6.0 |
| 3.5 | Very Limited | 60-71 | 5.5 |
| 3.0 | Basic | 42-59 | 4.5-5.0 |
During the 2-year transition period (January 2026 — January 2028), score reports will show BOTH the new 1-6 band score AND a comparable 0-120 score. This gives universities time to update their admission requirements. Most US universities are still listing requirements in the old 0-120 format but accept the new band scores.
Confused about how the new 1-6 band scale converts to your university requirements? EEC advisors map your target universities to exact band targets and build a personalised study plan.
