Choosing between Computer-Delivered IELTS (CD-IELTS) and Paper-Based IELTS is one of the most practical decisions you will make during your IELTS journey. While both versions are identical in content, difficulty, and scoring, the practical differences — results speed, test availability, OSR eligibility, and the writing experience — can significantly impact your overall strategy. Since IDP introduced CD-IELTS in India, it has rapidly become the preferred choice for the majority of Indian test-takers. This guide explains exactly what stays the same and what changes, along with honest pros and cons for each format based on EEC trainers' observations of thousands of students.
EEC prepares you for both Computer and Paper IELTS at \u20b97,500. Our mock tests simulate both formats so you can practice your preferred mode. Call +91 8758883889.
Book Free ConsultationComputer vs Paper — What Is the Difference?
The core difference is the delivery medium. On Paper-Based IELTS, you read printed question papers, write your answers on answer sheets using a pencil, and handwrite your Writing Task 1 and Task 2 responses. On Computer-Delivered IELTS (CD-IELTS), you read questions on a screen, click/type your Listening and Reading answers, and type your Writing responses on a keyboard. In both formats, the Speaking test is always face-to-face with a human examiner — it is never done on a computer, even in CD-IELTS.

| Listening | Listen + write on paper; 10 min transfer time | Listen + type directly; no transfer time |
| Reading | Read paper passages; write on answer sheet | Read on screen; click/type answers |
| Writing | Handwrite on paper (pen/pencil) | Type on keyboard |
| Speaking | Face-to-face with examiner | Face-to-face with examiner (identical) |
| Results | 13 calendar days | 3–5 business days |
| Test Frequency | 2–4 times per month | Multiple times per week |
| OSR Eligible | No | Yes (One Skill Retake) |

| Acceptance | Universally accepted | Universally accepted (no distinction) |
Same Content, Same Scoring — What Stays Identical
It is important to understand that no university, immigration authority, or employer distinguishes between CD-IELTS and Paper-Based IELTS. Your Test Report Form (TRF) does not indicate which format you took. The content difficulty, question types, timing per section, band descriptors, and scoring criteria are all identical. The same pool of questions is used for both formats. Your Writing and Speaking are evaluated by the same human examiners using the same assessment criteria. If you score Band 7.0 on paper, you would score Band 7.0 on computer with the same performance level.
Key Differences — Results, OSR, Availability
1. Results Speed: This is the most impactful practical difference. CD-IELTS results arrive in 3–5 business days, while paper results take 13 calendar days. If you are working with tight university application deadlines or need to submit a visa application urgently, CD-IELTS saves you 8–10 days.
2. One Skill Retake (OSR): Only available for CD-IELTS. If you score well in three sections but narrowly miss in one, you can retake just that one section within 60 days for approximately ₹7,500–8,000 instead of retaking the full test for ₹16,250. This saves approximately ₹8,750 and requires less preparation time. For a detailed guide, see our IELTS One Skill Retake guide.
3. Test Availability: CD-IELTS offers multiple test slots per week at most centers in India, while paper-based tests are typically available only 2–4 times per month. This means you can book CD-IELTS with shorter notice and reschedule more easily if needed.

Pros and Cons for Indian Students

| Factor | Computer — Advantage | Paper — Advantage |
|---|---|---|
| Writing Comfort | Faster typing, easy editing (cut/paste/delete) | Natural for students who think better while handwriting |
| Word Count | Automatic word count displayed on screen | Must manually estimate word count |
| Editing | Easy to add/delete/rearrange sentences | Difficult to edit; crossing out looks messy |
| Reading Experience | Scrollable screen; highlight and note features | Physical paper; some find it easier to scan and annotate |
| Listening Transfer | No transfer time; answers typed in real-time | 10 extra minutes to transfer answers to answer sheet |
| Handwriting Issues | No handwriting concerns; typed text is always legible | Illegible handwriting can affect Writing scores |
| Exam Anxiety | Familiar screen-based interface for tech-savvy students | Traditional exam environment, familiar to most Indian students |
| Internet/Tech Issues | Rare but possible; IDP has backup procedures | No technology dependency |
Pro Tip
How to Decide — Computer or Paper
Choose Computer-Delivered IELTS if: You type comfortably (30+ WPM), you want faster results (3–5 days), you want access to One Skill Retake, you need flexible scheduling (multiple dates per week), you prefer easy editing in Writing, or you find on-screen reading natural. Choose Paper-Based IELTS if: You genuinely think better when handwriting, you are a very slow typist, you find reading on paper easier, or you have significant computer anxiety. EEC's recommendation: For the vast majority of Indian students, CD-IELTS is the better choice. The faster results, OSR availability, and typing advantages outweigh the familiarity of paper for most test-takers.
Warning
One Skill Retake — Computer-Only Advantage
The One Skill Retake (OSR) option, introduced in 2023 for CD-IELTS, allows you to retake a single section within 60 days of your original test. Your final score combines your original scores in the three non-retaken sections with your new score in the retaken section. The fee is approximately ₹7,500–8,000 — roughly half the cost of a full retake. OSR is available for both Academic and General Training CD-IELTS.
OSR is most valuable when you score well overall but narrowly miss in one section. For example, if you need IELTS 7.0 each for Australia PR Proficient English and score L: 8.0, R: 7.5, W: 6.5, S: 7.0, you can retake Writing alone instead of the entire test. This focused approach also means your preparation for the retake is concentrated on one skill, which is more effective than re-preparing for all four. See our detailed OSR guide.
