IELTS Test Dates India 2026 — Overview
IELTS in India is administered exclusively by IDP Education India — the sole IELTS provider in India since 31-July-2021, when the British Council exited Indian IELTS test administration. Test centres are operated by IDP in partnership with local institutions. In 2026, there are two delivery formats: Computer-Delivered IELTS (CD-IELTS), which is available almost daily at major centres, and Paper-Based IELTS (PB-IELTS), which runs on fixed dates 2–4 times per month. Both formats test the same skills, have the same difficulty level, and produce identical TRFs (Test Report Forms). The only differences are the medium of delivery and the result turnaround — CD-IELTS results arrive in 3–5 business days, while PB-IELTS results take 13 calendar days.
India is one of the largest IELTS markets globally, with over 50 test centres across the country and more than 500,000 tests administered annually. For Gujarat-based students, test centres in Ahmedabad, Surat, and Vadodara offer both CD and paper-based options. The high demand means popular dates fill up quickly, especially during peak seasons:January–March (when students prepare for the September/Fall intake in the UK, Canada, and Australia) and July–September (when students prepare for the January/Winter intake). Planning your test date 4–6 weeks in advance is essential to secure your preferred slot.

| Format | Availability | Results | Speaking Test | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CD-IELTS | 3–5 times/week at major centres | 3–5 business days | Same day (recorded) | Fast results; flexible scheduling; OSR eligibility |
| PB-IELTS | 2–4 times/month (fixed dates) | 13 calendar days | Same day or up to 7 days before/after | Students who prefer writing by hand |
Computer-Delivered IELTS — Almost Daily Availability
Computer-Delivered IELTS has transformed test scheduling in India since its widespread rollout. At major Indian centres (Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Chennai), CD-IELTS is available 3–5 times per week, with some centres offering morning and afternoon sessions on the same day. This near-daily availability means you no longer need to plan your life around a single monthly test date. If you finish your preparation on a Tuesday, you can potentially book a CD-IELTS slot for that same week.
The CD-IELTS format itself is identical in content and difficulty to paper-based IELTS. The Listening, Reading, and Writing sections are completed on a computer screen. You type your Writing answers instead of handwriting them — a significant advantage for students with poor handwriting or slow writing speed, as typing is generally faster and allows easier editing. The Reading and Listening sections benefit from on-screen highlighting and note-taking tools. Importantly, CD-IELTS is the only format eligible for One Skill Retake (OSR) — so if you want the safety net of being able to retake just one section, CD-IELTS is the mandatory choice. See our complete OSR guide for details.
Pro Tip
Paper-Based IELTS — Monthly Schedule
Paper-Based IELTS runs on fixed dates set by IDP India, typically 2–4 Saturdays per month at most Indian centres. The 2026 schedule is published at the start of each year on ieltsidpindia.com, with dates announced approximately 3–4 months in advance. In Gujarat, paper-based tests are available in Ahmedabad (the largest centre with the most dates), Surat, and Vadodara. Smaller cities may have only 1–2 paper dates per month.
The paper-based format remains popular with students who prefer writing by hand, especially for the Writing section where some test takers feel they can think more creatively with a pen. The Speaking test for PB-IELTS is a face-to-face interview with a certified examiner, which may take place on the same day as the written test or up to 7 days before or after. You will receive your Speaking test schedule via email or SMS after booking. Results for PB-IELTS take 13 calendar days from the test date, published online at midnight on the 13th day. Physical TRFs are posted within 28 days of the result date.

How to Register for IELTS (IDP India)
Registering for IELTS in India is a straightforward online process. Here is the step-by-step procedure for booking through IDP India (the most common route for Gujarat-based students):
Step 1: Create Your IDP Account
Visit ieltsidpindia.comand create an account using your email address. You will need to provide your full name (exactly as it appears on your passport or national ID), date of birth, mobile number, and correspondence address. Ensure your name matches your identity document perfectly — any mismatch will cause problems at the test centre.
Step 2: Choose Test Format, Date & Centre
Select whether you want IELTS Academic (for university admission and professional registration) or IELTS General Training (for immigration and some work visas). Then choose CD-IELTS or Paper-Based, your preferred date, and your preferred test centre. The system shows real-time seat availability. If your first-choice date is full, alternative dates at the same centre or nearby centres are suggested.
Step 3: Pay the Fee & Confirm
The IELTS fee in India is ₹19,000for both Academic and General Training (same fee for CD and PB). UKVI is ₹19,250 and Life Skills A1/B1 is ₹18,000. Payment can be made via credit card, debit card, net banking, or UPI. After payment, you receive a confirmation email with your test date, centre address, reporting time, and ID requirements. All bookings flow through ieltsidpindia.com — IDP is the sole IELTS administrator in India since 31-July-2021.

Surat and Vadodara have growing capacity, with CD-IELTS available 2–3 times per week and paper-based tests 2 times per month.

| City (Gujarat) | CD-IELTS Frequency | PB-IELTS Frequency | Operators |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ahmedabad | 4–5 times/week | 3–4 times/month | IDP India (sole administrator since 31-Jul-2021) |
| Surat | 2–3 times/week | 2 times/month | IDP |
| Vadodara | 2–3 times/week | 2 times/month | IDP |
| Rajkot | 1–2 times/week (CD only) | Limited | IDP |
Beyond Gujarat, major Indian IELTS centres with the highest frequency include New Delhi (10+ centres, near-daily CD availability), Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Chandigarh, Pune, and Kolkata. If your preferred date is unavailable at your local centre, consider travelling to a nearby city with more slots. Many EEC students from Rajkot, Bhavnagar, and Junagadh travel to Ahmedabad for greater date flexibility.
Tips for Booking Your IELTS Date
Strategic test date selection can significantly impact your overall study abroad timeline. Here are EEC's expert booking tips based on counseling thousands of Indian students annually:
Tip 1: Work Backwards from Your Deadline
Start with your university application deadline or immigration submission date and work backwards. You need your IELTS result BEFORE the deadline. For CD-IELTS, allow 5–7 business days for results. For PB-IELTS, allow 13–15 calendar days. Then add 2–3 weeks buffer for potential OSRif you narrowly miss. This means your ideal first test date is approximately 5–6 weeks before your deadline.
Tip 2: Avoid Peak Season Crowding
The busiest IELTS months in India are January–March (Fall/September intake preparation) and July–September(January/Winter intake preparation). If your timeline allows, take IELTS in the off-peak months (April–June or October–November) when centre availability is higher, testing rooms are less crowded, and you may even find it easier to concentrate.
Tip 3: Book 3–4 Weeks in Advance
While CD-IELTS has high availability, the most convenient time slots (morning sessions, weekends) still fill up quickly. Book at least 3–4 weeks ahead to secure your preferred date and time. For paper-based IELTS, book 4–6 weeks ahead during peak season.
