The IELTS One Skill Retake (OSR) is a game-changing option introduced in 2023 that allows test takers to retake just one section of the IELTS test — Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking — instead of sitting the entire exam again. For thousands of Indian students who miss their target band by just 0.5 in a single section, OSR saves time, money, and stress. In this comprehensive guide, EEC — with 27+ years of coaching experience across Gujarat — explains the complete OSR rules, eligibility criteria, fees, booking process, and strategic decision-making to help you decide whether OSR is the right choice for your situation.

Book Free ConsultationWhat Is the IELTS One Skill Retake?
The IELTS One Skill Retake (OSR) was launched globally in late 2023 by IDP, the British Council, and Cambridge. It is available only for Computer-Delivered IELTS (CD-IELTS) — not for paper-based IELTS. The concept is simple: if you took a CD-IELTS test and scored well in three sections but fell short in one, you can retake that single section within 60 days of your original test. Your final score report will combine the three original section scores with the new retaken section score, producing a single composite Test Report Form (TRF) that is treated as a complete, valid IELTS result.
This is a significant departure from the previous IELTS policy where the only option for improving one section was to retake the entire 2-hour-45-minute exam — all four sections, a new fee, a new date, and the risk of scoring lower in sections where you had already achieved your target. The OSR eliminates that risk entirely. For instance, if you scored L:7.5, R:7.0, W:6.5, S:7.0 and need 7.0 in all sections for Australia PR, you can retake only Writing. Your Listening, Reading, and Speaking scores remain locked at the original levels. The new Writing score replaces the old one, and you receive a fresh TRF showing all four scores.

Eligibility Rules — Who Can Use OSR
Not everyone who has taken IELTS can use the One Skill Retake. There are specific eligibility criteria that must be met: (1) CD-IELTS only: You must have taken Computer-Delivered IELTS. Paper-based IELTS test takers are NOT eligible for OSR. If you took paper-based IELTS, your only option is a full retake. (2) Same test format: Your OSR must be the same format as your original test. If you took IELTS Academic, your OSR must also be Academic. If you took IELTS General Training, your OSR must be General Training. You cannot switch formats. (3) 60-day window: You must book and complete the OSR within 60 days of your original CD-IELTS test date. After 60 days, the OSR option expires and you must take the full test again. (4) One retake only: You can retake only ONE section per original test. You cannot use OSR to retake two or more sections.
An important rule that many Indian students overlook is the score replacement policy: your OSR score replaces the original section score regardless of whether it is higher or lower. If you scored 6.5 in Writing and retake it through OSR, and you score 6.0 on the retake, your composite TRF will show 6.0 for Writing — not the higher of the two. This means you must be genuinely prepared to improve before using OSR. It is not a “free second chance” — it is a strategic tool that requires careful preparation. EEC trainers always recommend at least 2–3 weeks of focused section-specific practice before attempting an OSR.
Warning
OSR Fee and Booking Process
The IELTS One Skill Retake fee in India is approximately \u20b97,500–8,000 depending on the test centre and partner (IDP or British Council). This is roughly half the cost of a full IELTS test (\u20b916,250), making it a financially attractive option for students who missed their target by a narrow margin in just one section. The fee covers the single-section test, a composite TRF, and up to five additional TRFs sent to institutions.
To book an OSR, log in to your IDP or British Council account where you originally registered for CD-IELTS. The OSR option will appear in your account dashboard within 5–7 days after your original result is published. You can then select your preferred date and centre for the retake section. Availability varies by centre — in India, major cities like Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Delhi, and Bangalore typically have OSR slots available within 1–2 weeks. Smaller cities may have fewer slots, so book early within your 60-day window. Processing time for the composite result is typically 5–7 business days after the OSR test, similar to regular CD-IELTS results.

When to Use OSR vs Full Retake
The decision between OSR and a full retake depends on three factors: (1) How many sections need improvement? OSR is ideal when exactly one section is below target and the other three are at or above target. If two or more sections need improvement, OSR cannot help — you need a full retake. (2) How close are you to the target? OSR is most effective when you missed by 0.5 in one section. If you missed by 1.0 or more, the improvement needed is significant and may require more preparation time than the 60-day window allows. (3) What was your original test experience? If you had an off day (illness, nervousness, external distraction) that affected only one section, OSR lets you correct that anomaly without re-risking your other scores.
Scenario analysis for Indian students: Suppose your target is IELTS 7 each for Australia PR and you scored L:7.5, R:7.0, W:6.5, S:7.0. OSR for Writing is the clear choice — your other three scores are safe. Now suppose you scored L:7.0, R:6.5, W:6.5, S:7.0 — two sections below target. OSR can only fix one, so even if you retake Reading and improve to 7.0, your Writing remains at 6.5. In this case, a full retake is more strategic because you can potentially improve both Reading and Writing. EEC counselors analyse your exact score pattern and advise the optimal retake strategy. How to Prepare for Your OSR Section
Because you have a maximum of 60 days from your original test and need to book the OSR within that window, effective OSR preparation is intensive and focused. Here is a section-by-section preparation guide:
OSR for Writing
Writing is the most commonly retaken OSR section because it has the lowest global average and is the section where Indian students most frequently fall 0.5 short. For a Writing OSR: (1) Get your original essays reviewed by an expert trainer who can score them against the official band descriptors and identify exactly which criterion (Task Response, Coherence, Vocabulary, or Grammar) caused the 6.5 instead of 7.0. (2) Write 8–10 practice essays under timed conditions (40 minutes for Task 2, 20 minutes for Task 1) with feedback after each. (3) Build a personal “Band 7 checklist” of specific improvements and verify each essay meets every item. EEC trainers provide line-by-line feedback calibrated to Band 7+ requirements. See our Writing Task 2 guide.
OSR for Speaking
Speaking is the second most common OSR choice. For a Speaking OSR: (1) Record yourself answering Part 2 cue cards and Part 3 discussions — listen back for hesitation patterns, vocabulary gaps, and pronunciation issues. (2) Do at least 5 full mock speaking interviews with a trained IELTS examiner or expert coach. (3) Focus on the specific descriptor gap: if your fluency is at 7 but pronunciation is at 6, intensive pronunciation drills will be more effective than general speaking practice. EEC's Speaking mocks include descriptor-level scoring so you know exactly where to improve. See our Speaking tips guide.
OSR for Listening or Reading
Listening and Reading OSR retakes are less common but can be very effective because these sections are objectively scored. For Listening OSR: (1) Drill Sections 3 and 4 (academic discussions and lectures) daily. (2) Practice with Cambridge Books 15–19 under timed, exam-like conditions. (3) Eliminate spelling errors through dictation practice. For Reading OSR: (1) Master True/False/Not Given and Matching Headings — the two question types that cost the most marks. (2) Practice strict time management: 20 minutes per passage, no exceptions. See our Listening tips and Reading tips guides.
