One of the first questions every Indian student asks before taking IELTS is: “How much does IELTS cost in India?” The answer goes well beyond the test fee alone. Between the registration fee, coaching expenses, study materials, travel to the test center, and the possibility of a second attempt, the total cost of achieving your target IELTS band can range from ₹25,000 to over ₹75,000 depending on the choices you make. This guide breaks down every cost component for IELTS in India in 2026, verified against IDP India (the sole IELTS distributor in India since July 25, 2021). We also compare coaching costs across different types of institutes and show you how to minimize expenses without compromising your preparation quality.

All IELTS tests in India are administered exclusively by IDP Education, which has been the sole distributor since July 25, 2021. The British Council no longer conducts IELTS tests in India. The standard test fee for both IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training is approximately ₹16,250, and this applies equally to paper-based and computer-delivered formats. There is no price difference between Academic and GT, nor between paper and computer delivery. The fee must be paid in full at the time of online registration through IDP's portal (ieltsidpindia.com) via credit card, debit card, net banking, or UPI.

| Test Type | Fee (INR) | Results Timeline | OSR Eligible |
|---|---|---|---|
| IELTS Academic (Paper) | ₹16,250 | 13 calendar days | No |
| IELTS Academic (Computer) | ₹16,250 | 3–5 business days | Yes |
| IELTS General Training (Paper) | ₹16,250 | 13 calendar days | No |
| IELTS General Training (Computer) | ₹16,250 | 3–5 business days | Yes |
| IELTS for UKVI (Paper or Computer) | ~₹17,000 | 13 days (paper) / 3–5 days (computer) | Check with IDP |
| One Skill Retake (OSR) | ~₹7,500–8,000 | 3–5 business days | N/A |
IELTS for UKVI costs approximately ₹17,000 — slightly more than the standard test because it must be administered at designated Secure English Language Test (SELT) centers approved by UK Visas and Immigration. If you are applying for a UK student visa, skilled worker visa, spouse visa, or settlement (ILR), you may need the UKVI version. See our complete IELTS for UKVI guide to determine whether you need it. The One Skill Retake (OSR), available since 2023 for Computer-Delivered IELTS only, costs approximately ₹7,500–8,000 and lets you retake just one section within 60 days of your original test.
Complete Fee Breakdown — What You Pay & When
The test registration fee is just one part of the total IELTS investment. Most Indian students spend between ₹25,000 and ₹50,000 on their entire IELTS journey, from initial preparation to receiving their score. Here is a realistic breakdown of what a typical student can expect to pay, with estimates for each component based on market averages and EEC's coaching fee.

| Cost Component | Typical Range (INR) | When You Pay | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| IELTS Test Registration | ₹16,250 | At registration | Same for Academic & GT, paper & computer |
| Coaching / Preparation | ₹7,500–50,000 | Before test | EEC: ₹7,500 | Big brands: ₹15,000–50,000 |
| Study Materials | ₹0–2,000 | During prep | Cambridge books: ₹500–2,000; free online resources available |
| Mock Tests (if separate) | ₹0–3,000 | During prep | Free with EEC coaching; paid separately at some centers |
| Travel to Test Center | ₹0–1,500 | Test day | Depends on distance; zero if center is nearby |
| Score Report (Extra Copies) | ₹1,750 per copy | After results | First 5 sent free; additional copies charged by IDP |
| Second Attempt (if needed) | ₹16,250 or ₹7,500 (OSR) | If retaking | OSR saves ~₹8,750 vs full retake |
| Total (First Attempt) | ₹25,000–70,000 | — | Range depends on coaching and materials choices |
The biggest variable is coaching cost. Premium national brands charge ₹25,000–50,000 for classroom courses, while local tutors may charge ₹5,000–15,000 with variable quality. Online-only platforms range from ₹3,000 (basic video courses) to ₹20,000 (live interactive classes). EEC's ₹7,500 fee includes all three delivery modes (Classroom, Online Live, and Pre-recorded), full-length mock tests, personalized writing correction, speaking practice, and — uniquely — FREE study abroad counseling at every branch. This makes EEC one of the best value-for-money IELTS coaching options in India, especially for students who also need guidance on university applications and visa processes.

IELTS Coaching Cost Comparison in India
Coaching is the single largest controllable expense in your IELTS journey. Choosing the right coaching institute depends on your budget, learning style, and whether you need additional services like study abroad counseling. Below is a comparison of typical coaching costs across different categories of IELTS preparation providers in India. Note that price alone does not determine quality — what matters is the combination of experienced trainers, personalized feedback (especially for Writing and Speaking), realistic mock tests, and alignment with your overall study abroad or immigration plan.

| Provider Type | Fee Range (INR) | Includes | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| EEC (Classroom/Online/Recorded) | ₹7,500 | All 3 modes, mocks, writing feedback, speaking practice, FREE study abroad counseling | Best value: preparation + counseling combined |
| Premium National Brands | ₹20,000–50,000 | Classroom, online, materials; counseling usually separate fee | Students who want a brand name |
| Local Coaching Centers | ₹5,000–15,000 | Classroom only, basic materials | Budget-conscious; quality varies significantly |
| Online Platforms (Recorded) | ₹3,000–10,000 | Pre-recorded videos, some practice tests | Self-disciplined learners; no live interaction |
| Online Platforms (Live) | ₹10,000–20,000 | Live classes, limited 1-on-1 feedback | Students outside coaching center cities |
| Private Tutors | ₹10,000–30,000 | 1-on-1 coaching, flexible schedule | Personalized attention; expensive |
| Self-Study (No Coaching) | ₹0–2,000 | Free resources + books only | Strong English base; high self-discipline |
A critical factor many students overlook is whether coaching includes study abroad counseling. At standalone IELTS coaching centers, you pay for test preparation only. After scoring, you then need to separately find and pay a study abroad consultancy (₹10,000–50,000) for university shortlisting, application support, SOP writing, and visa guidance. At EEC, all of this is included free with your ₹7,500 IELTS coaching enrollment. Over the full journey from IELTS to university enrollment, this integration can save you ₹20,000–50,000 compared to using separate service providers.

Hidden Costs Most Students Miss
Beyond the obvious test fee and coaching cost, several hidden expenses catch students off guard. Extra score report copies are a common one: IDP sends your results to up to 5 institutions for free, but each additional copy costs approximately ₹1,750. If you are applying to 8–10 universities across multiple countries, this can add up to ₹5,000–8,000. Rescheduling or cancellation fees are another trap: if you need to change your test date within 5 weeks of the exam, IDP may charge a transfer fee. Cancellations made less than 5 weeks before the test typically result in a partial refund (around 75% of the test fee).
Travel and accommodation costs affect students in smaller cities where IELTS test centers may not be available locally. If you live in a town without a test center, you may need to travel to the nearest city (Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, etc.) for both your test and any in-person coaching. For students in remote areas, this could mean hotel stays and travel expenses of ₹2,000–5,000 per trip. Opportunity cost is often the largest hidden expense: if you score below your target and need to retake, you may miss a university intake deadline, delaying your study abroad plans by 6–12 months — costing you a semester of time and potential earnings.

How to Save Money on IELTS — Smart Strategies
The smartest way to save money on IELTS is to achieve your target band on the first attempt. Every retake costs ₹16,250 (or ₹7,500–8,000 for OSR), so investing adequately in preparation upfront is almost always cheaper than cutting corners and needing a second attempt. Here are specific strategies to minimize your total IELTS spend:
1. Choose Computer-Delivered IELTS. This unlocks One Skill Retake (OSR), saving you ~₹8,750 if you only need to retake one section. It also gives you results in 3–5 days instead of 13, which can be critical for meeting application deadlines. 2. Use free official resources. IDP provides free practice tests, sample questions, and preparation tips on their website. Cambridge IELTS practice test books (available for ₹500–800 each) contain real past exam papers and are the single best investment in preparation materials. 3. Choose coaching that includes study abroad counseling. Paying ₹7,500 at EEC for IELTS coaching plus free counseling is significantly cheaper than paying ₹20,000–30,000 for coaching at one place and ₹15,000–40,000 for counseling at another.
4. Plan your test date strategically. Register early to get your preferred date and avoid last-minute rescheduling fees. Align your test date with your university application timeline — taking IELTS too early means your 2-year validity might expire before you need it, while taking it too late may force you to rush or miss deadlines. 5. Limit extra score reports. Be strategic about which universities you send your scores to. Research your shortlisted universities' IELTS requirements before registering, so you can use the 5 free score reports wisely.
