PTE vs IELTS for Australia 2026: Which Is Better for PR & Immigration?

For Australia PR applicants, the choice between PTE and IELTS is the most important test decision you will make. Both are accepted by the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) for all skilled visa subclasses. Both can earn you 0, 10, or 20 English language points. But the format, speed, scoring method, and retake options differ significantly — and for Australia-bound Indian students, these differences matter.
Both Are Equally Accepted by Australia DHA
Australia DHA accepts PTE Academic, IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, and Cambridge C1 Advanced for skilled migration points testing. All four tests are equally valid — there is no preference. The same English proficiency thresholds apply regardless of which test you take: Competent (0 points), Proficient (10 points), Superior (20 points).

| Level | PTE Score (Each Skill) | IELTS Band (Each) | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Competent | 65 | 6.0 | 0 (mandatory minimum) |
| Proficient | 79 | 7.0 | 10 |
| Superior | 90 | 8.0 | 20 |
PTE Speed Advantage: 48 Hours vs 13 Days
This is PTE's strongest advantage for Australia immigration. PTE delivers results in 1-5 business days (typically 48 hours). IELTS paper-based takes 13 calendar days. IELTS computer-based takes 3-5 days but is not available at all centres.
Why speed matters for Australia PR: EOI invitation rounds happen regularly. If you miss a round, you may wait weeks or months for the next one. The ability to take PTE on Monday, receive results by Wednesday, and update your EOI by Friday can literally save months in your immigration timeline.
Speed also matters for retakes. PTE has a 5-day retake wait vs IELTS's requirement to book a new test date (often 2-4 weeks out). If you fall short of your target, PTE allows you to try again within a week.
Speaking: AI vs Human for Australia Points
For the Australia 79 threshold (Proficient, 10 points), Speaking is often the bottleneck. Many Indian students report consistent IELTS Speaking scores of 6.0-6.5 despite strong English — the human examiner format creates anxiety and inconsistency.
PTE Speaking is AI-scored via microphone recording. There is no face-to-face interaction. The AI evaluates pronunciation, oral fluency, and content objectively. Students who struggle with IELTS Speaking anxiety often find PTE Speaking more predictable and consistent.
“Three IELTS attempts — Speaking stuck at 6.5 each time. Switched to PTE, scored 84 in Speaking on the first try. The AI does not care about your accent. It cares about clarity and fluency. That changed everything for my 190 visa.”
— Ravi K., PTE 84 Speaking, Subclass 190 — Software Engineer

IELTS advantage: IELTS offers the One Skill Retake (OSR). If you score IELTS 7.0 in three bands but 6.5 in one, you can retake just that one band for the full test fee. This targeted approach saves time and reduces stress.
PTE disadvantage: PTE requires a full retake every time. Even if you score 85+ in three skills but 77 in one (missing the 79 threshold), you must retake the entire test. However, PTE's 5-day retake availability and 48-hour results partially compensate — you can retake and get results within a week.

EEC Student Data: PTE vs IELTS for Australia
Based on EEC's coaching records across thousands of Australia-bound students:
~80% choose PTE as their primary test for Australia immigration. The main reasons cited: faster results, AI scoring comfort, and typing preference.
~15% choose IELTS as their primary test. Main reasons: familiarity with IELTS format, preference for face-to-face speaking, One Skill Retake option.
~5% take both — typically students who started with one test, struggled to reach their target, and switched to the other format.
Average attempts to reach PTE 79: 1.8 attempts for PTE students, 2.3 attempts for IELTS 7.0 each. PTE students tend to reach their target faster, but this may reflect self-selection (students who choose PTE may already be more tech-comfortable).
EEC Recommendation for Australia PR
Choose PTE if: Speed matters to you, you are comfortable with computers and typing, you prefer AI-scored speaking, you want unlimited free score reports, and your primary target is Australia.
Choose IELTS if: You prefer face-to-face speaking, you want the One Skill Retake safety net, you are also targeting other countries where IELTS has wider acceptance, or you have already prepared extensively for IELTS.
