Book Free ConsultationWhat Is IELTS OSR?
IELTS One Skill Retake — commonly abbreviated as OSR — is an official feature introduced by the IELTS partners (IDP, British Council, and Cambridge) that allows test-takers to retake a single section of the IELTS exam without repeating the remaining three sections. If your overall band is held back by one weak section, OSR saves you time, money, and stress. The retake must be completed within 60 days of the original Computer-Delivered IELTS (CD-IELTS) test date. Once you sit for the retake, the new section score replaces the old one and a combined Test Report Form (TRF) is issued.
OSR is exclusively available for Computer-Delivered IELTS (both Academic and General Training). Paper-based test results do not qualify. This distinction is crucial — many students assume any IELTS result is eligible, but only CD-IELTS sittings unlock the OSR option. If you originally took paper-based IELTS, your only path to improvement is a full retake. For a deep dive into CD-IELTS format, benefits, and booking, read our complete CD-IELTS guide.

OSR Eligibility Rules
Before booking your IELTS One Skill Retake, confirm that you meet every eligibility criterion. Missing even one rule means your retake application will be rejected — and you will have wasted valuable preparation time. The following rules are verified against ielts.org and IDP India as of February 2026.
Mandatory Eligibility Criteria
1. Computer-Delivered IELTS only. Your original test must have been taken on computer, not on paper. This applies to both IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training. Paper-based test-takers must take a full retake instead. 2. Within 60 days. The OSR must be booked and completed within 60 calendar days of your original CD-IELTS test date. After 60 days, the OSR window closes permanently for that sitting. 3. One retake per sitting. You are allowed exactly one OSR per original test. You cannot retake two sections, nor can you retake the same section twice under OSR. 4. Not available for UKVI or Life Skills. IELTS for UKVI (UK Visas and Immigration) and IELTS Life Skills tests are not eligible for OSR. If you are applying for a UK visa that specifically requires UKVI IELTS, you must take a full UKVI retake. For more on UKVI, see our IELTS UKVI guide. 5. Same test version. Your retake must be the same module as the original — if you sat Academic, you retake the Academic version of that section, and likewise for General Training.
Warning
If you are unsure whether your original test qualifies, check your booking confirmation email or contact your test center directly. EEC counselors can also verify your eligibility and help you decide whether OSR or a full retake is the smarter path. Which Section to Retake — Decision Tree
Choosing the right section to retake is the most important strategic decision in the OSR process. Since you can retake only one section, you must identify the section where improvement yields the highest overall band gain. Here is a systematic decision framework used by EEC trainers across all 26 centers.
Step 1: Identify Your Weakest Section
Compare your four section scores to your target. The section with the largest gap between your achieved score and required score is your primary retake candidate. For example, if you need L 7.0 / R 7.0 / W 6.5 / S 6.5 for Canada PR (CLB 9) and you scored L 7.5 / R 7.0 / W 5.5 / S 6.5, Writing is clearly the weak section.
Step 2: Consider Improvement Potential
Some sections respond faster to targeted preparation than others. Listening and Reading improvements can happen in 2–3 weeks through question-type drilling. Writing usually needs 3–4 weeks of structured practice with expert feedback. Speaking depends on fluency habits and typically needs consistent daily practice over 2–4 weeks. Factor this into your timeline — remember, you have a maximum of 60 days.
Step 3: Calculate Overall Band Impact
Use the EEC IELTS Score Calculator to model different retake outcomes. Sometimes a 0.5-band improvement in one section does not change the overall band due to rounding rules, while a 1.0-band improvement almost always does. Run the numbers before committing.
← Swipe left to see more columns →
| Scenario | Weakest Section | Recommended Retake | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 section below target | Writing at 5.5 (need 6.5) | Writing OSR | Clear single weakness; focused preparation works |
| 1 section below target | Speaking at 6.0 (need 7.0) | Speaking OSR | Fluency + Part 2/3 practice can bridge 1.0 band gap |
| 1 section marginally below | Listening at 6.5 (need 7.0) | Listening OSR | Quick gains possible with question-type drilling |
| 2+ sections below target | Writing 5.5 + Speaking 5.5 | Full retake | OSR fixes only 1 section; full retake is better value |
| All sections at/above target | None | No retake needed | Submit your existing TRF |
Pro Tip
OSR Fee & Booking
The IELTS One Skill Retake fee in India ranges from approximately ₹7,500 to ₹8,000 depending on the test center and city. This is roughly 40–45% of the full IELTS test fee (₹17,000–18,000), making OSR a cost-effective alternative when only one section needs improvement. The fee is the same regardless of which section you retake — Writing, Speaking, Listening, or Reading all cost the same.
How to Book Your OSR
Step 1: Log in to your IDP IELTS account (the same account used for your original booking). Step 2: Navigate to the "One Skill Retake" section. Your original test result must be visible and within the 60-day window. Step 3: Select the section you wish to retake and choose an available date and center. Step 4: Pay the OSR fee online via credit card, debit card, or net banking. Step 5: Download your booking confirmation and prepare for the retake.
OSR dates are available at CD-IELTS test centers across India, including major cities in Gujarat such as Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, and Rajkot. Since OSR slots can fill up quickly — especially for Writing and Speaking — book as early as possible once you decide. How Scores Are Combined
Once your OSR result is available, the new section score automatically replaces the corresponding score from your original test. The overall band is then recalculated using the standard IELTS averaging formula: the four section scores are averaged and rounded to the nearest whole or half band. A new combined Test Report Form (TRF) is issued that reflects three original scores plus one OSR score. The original TRF remains valid, but most students use the combined TRF for applications.
Score Combination Example
Suppose a student targets an overall 7.0 for Canada PR with minimum 6.5 in each section. The original result and the combined result after a Writing OSR would look like this:
← Swipe left to see more columns →
| Section | Original Score | After Writing OSR | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Listening | 7.5 | 7.5 (kept) | — |
| Reading | 7.0 | 7.0 (kept) | — |
| Writing | 5.5 | 6.5 (new) | +1.0 ↑ |
| Speaking | 7.0 | 7.0 (kept) | — |
| Overall Band | 6.5 | 7.0 | +0.5 ↑ |
In this example, the student's Writing score jumped from 5.5 to 6.5, which pushed the overall band from 6.5 to 7.0 — meeting the Canada PR requirement. The three sections that already met the target were preserved. Without OSR, this student would have needed to retake all four sections, risking drops in Listening and Speaking. Use the EEC IELTS Score Calculator to model your own scenarios.
“OSR gave me a second chance without the anxiety of retaking sections I had already nailed. My Writing went from 5.5 to 7.0 after four weeks of focused EEC coaching, and my overall jumped to 7.0. I got my Canada PR invite the same month.”
— Ravi P., EEC Ahmedabad student
OSR vs Full Retake — When to Choose
The decision between OSR and a full retake depends on how many sections fall short of your target. As a general rule: if exactly one section is below target, choose OSR. If two or more sections are below target, a full retake is more effective because OSR can only fix one.
← Swipe left to see more columns →
| Factor | OSR | Full Retake |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | ₹7,500–₹8,000 | ₹17,000–₹18,000 |
| Sections Tested | 1 only | All 4 |
| Best When | 1 section below target | 2+ sections below target |
| Preparation Focus | Single section intensive | All-section revision |
| Risk of Score Drops | Zero (other 3 are locked) | Possible in any section |
| Turnaround Time | 3–5 days for result | 5–13 days for result |
| Format Requirement | CD-IELTS only | Any (CD or Paper) |
| UKVI Eligible | No | Yes (if UKVI version) |
A key advantage of OSR is risk elimination. In a full retake, even if you improve your weak section, you might score lower in another section due to a bad day, unfamiliar topics, or test anxiety. With OSR, your three strong scores are permanently locked in. This makes OSR the safer bet when only one section holds you back.
Good News
Students targeting immigration should also consider CRS score implications. For example, improving from CLB 8 to CLB 9 in one skill can add 20–40 CRS points. Our IELTS score for Canada PR guide has the full CLB–CRS conversion table. For Australia-bound students, see our IELTS for Australia PR guide.

Writing OSR Strategy
Writing is the most commonly retaken section via OSR because it has the lowest average scores among Indian test-takers (typically 5.5–6.0 nationally). Improving Writing by 0.5–1.0 bands requires a structured approach focusing on the four official assessment criteria: Task Achievement/Response, Coherence & Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range & Accuracy.
Task 2 (Essay) — The Big Lever
Task 2 carries twice the weightage of Task 1 in the overall Writing score. For Academic students, Task 2 is a 250+ word essay on a general topic. For GT students, Task 2 is similar. Focus 60% of your preparation on Task 2. Master three essay structures: opinion, discussion, and problem-solution. Each essay should follow a clear 4–5 paragraph template: introduction with thesis, 2–3 body paragraphs with topic sentences, and a conclusion. EEC's Writing module teaches battle-tested templates that help students consistently score 7.0+ without sounding formulaic.
Task 1 — Academic vs GT
Academic Task 1 requires describing charts, graphs, maps, or processes in 150+ words. GT Task 1 is a letter (formal, semi-formal, or informal). For both versions, the key is covering all required elements, using appropriate tone, and maintaining coherence. Practice at least 15 Task 1 responses under timed conditions before your OSR. Review model answers from EEC's Task 1 Academic guide or Task 1 GT letter guide.
Pro Tip
Speaking OSR Strategy
Speaking is the second most popular OSR section. Unlike Writing, Speaking improvement requires consistent daily practice — you cannot cram for it in a weekend. The Speaking test has three parts: Part 1 (general questions, 4–5 minutes), Part 2 (cue card / long turn, 3–4 minutes), and Part 3 (discussion, 4–5 minutes). Each part tests slightly different skills, but fluency and coherence are weighted across all three.
Part 2 Cue Card Mastery
Part 2 is where most marks are gained or lost. You receive a topic card and have 1 minute to prepare and 1–2 minutes to speak. The key is structured delivery: open with a direct answer, expand with 2–3 supporting details, and conclude with a personal reflection. Practice with the latest 2026 cue card topics from EEC. Record yourself, time your responses, and review for filler words, pauses, and pronunciation errors.
Part 3 Opinion & Discussion
Part 3 questions follow up on the Part 2 topic with abstract, opinion-based questions. To score 7.0+ in Part 3, you need to express opinions with reasons, compare perspectives, and use conditional/hypothetical language. Practice frameworks such as "I believe X because... On the other hand, some people argue that... In my view, the most important factor is..." EEC trainers conduct live Speaking mock interviews with personalized feedback. For full Speaking strategies, read our IELTS Speaking tips guide.
Also review our IELTS Speaking Part 1 topics for 2026 to cover the full test. Consistent daily practice of 20–30 minutes for 3–4 weeks is the most effective Speaking improvement strategy for OSR.
Reading/Listening OSR Tips
Reading and Listening are the quickest sections to improve through targeted practice because they are scored on a right/wrong basis (40 questions each). Every additional correct answer directly raises your band. Unlike Writing and Speaking, there is no subjective assessment — your score is determined purely by the number of correct answers.
Listening OSR: Rapid Improvement in 2–3 Weeks
Focus on the question types that cause the most errors: form completion (spelling matters), multiple choice, and map/plan labeling. Listen to each practice test twice — once under test conditions and once while reading the transcript. This builds your ear for British, Australian, and North American accents. Getting 3–5 more correct answers can push your score up by 0.5–1.0 bands. For detailed techniques, see our IELTS Listening tips guide.
Reading OSR: Technique Over Speed
Reading improvement comes from mastering specific question types: True/False/Not Given, matching headings, sentence completion, and summary completion. Skim-and-scan techniques help you locate answers faster, but accuracy matters more than speed. Aim to answer the easiest 30 questions correctly and then attempt the harder 10. Moving from 28 to 32 correct answers can improve your band by 0.5. Check our IELTS Reading tips guide for question-type strategies.
