The Spain long-stay student visa Visado de Estudios (Type D) is required for Indian students enrolled in Spanish programmes longer than 180 days. Apply through BLS International with €90 fee (around ₹8,400; standard Spanish national visa fee, exteriores.gob.es). Requires IPREM proof of funds (€7,200/year), health insurance, medical certificate, Indian Police Clearance, and university admission. After arrival in Spain, you have 1 month ("un mes" per exteriores.gob.es) to apply for the TIE residence card.
What is Type D Spain Student Visa
Type D (Visado de Estudios) is Spain's long-stay student visa for programmes longer than 180 days. Valid for the full programme duration up to 1 year at a time. Apply through BLS International at least 60 days before programme start. After arrival you must apply for TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) within 1 month ("un mes" per exteriores.gob.es) at the Oficina de Extranjería or Police Station. The visa permits up to 30 hours/week part-time work (note: automatic work rights without a separate permit apply ONLY to higher-education students per RD 629/2022 + RD 1155/2024; other student categories must still obtain authorisation).

Step-by-Step Visa Process
Eight steps: (1) Receive Spanish university admission. (2) Obtain medical certificate from registered Indian doctor. (3) Apply for Indian Police Clearance Certificate + state apostille (3–6 weeks). (4) Translate documents into Spanish via certified translator + Hague apostille. (5) Book BLS International appointment. (6) Submit documents + biometrics + visa fee at BLS centre. (7) Collect passport with stamped visa in 3–5 weeks. (8) Apply for TIE within 1 month of arrival in Spain (per exteriores.gob.es).
IPREM Proof of Funds
Spain requires non-EU students to show 100% of IPREM (Indicador Público de Renta de Efectos Múltiples) for the full programme duration. For 2026, IPREM is €600/month, so the visa requires €7,200/year (around ₹6.5 lakh) for 1-year programmes, €14,400 for 2-year master's. Acceptable proofs: scholarship letter (MAEC-AECID, Carolina, IE Foundation), bank statements 3+ months in your or sponsor's name, fixed deposits, education loan sanction letter from recognised Indian bank.
Medical Certificate Requirement
Spain requires a medical certificate signed by a registered Indian doctor stating: "The applicant has been examined and does not suffer from any diseases that may have serious public health consequences according to the International Health Regulations 2005 of the World Health Organization." The certificate must be issued within 90 days before visa submission and translated into Spanish (or English if your consulate accepts).
Criminal Record Check (PCC)

Applicants aged 18 or older must submit an Indian Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) covering the 5 years prior to application. Obtain PCC from your local Passport Seva Kendra or police verification office (₹500–₹1,000 fee, 1–3 weeks). The PCC must then be apostilled via your state Home Department and translated into Spanish. Total time: 3–6 weeks.
