The Italy long-stay student visa Visto Nazionale per Motivi di Studio (Type D) is mandatory for Indian students enrolled in Italian programmes longer than 90 days. Issued through VFS Italy with a €50 fee (around ₹4,600) — the universal student Type D rate set by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs — it requires Universitaly pre-enrollment, university admission, a CIMEA Statement of Comparability + Statement of Verification (an alternative to the old Dichiarazione di Valore/DOV — universities and consulates accept either at their discretion per universitaly.it and the MUR), and €534.41/month proof of funds (€6,947.33/year over 13 months — Italian consular table 2025/26, esteri.it). This 2026 guide covers every document, every fee in INR and the post-arrival Permesso di Soggiorno that must be filed within 8 days.
What is Type D Italy Student Visa
Type D (Visto Nazionale per Motivi di Studio) is Italy's long-stay student visa for programmes exceeding 90 days. Valid for the full programme duration up to 1 year at a time, it permits multiple Schengen entries. After arrival, you have 8 days to apply for the Permesso di Soggiorno (residence permit) at the local Questura. The visa allows 20 hours/week part-time work without separate permit.

Step-by-Step Visa Process
Eight steps from offer letter to VFS submission. (1) Receive Italian university admission letter. (2) Register on Universitaly.it and apply via Italian Consulate. (3) Obtain CIMEA Statement of Comparability + Verification (CIMEA online — 60 working days standard / 30 days urgent). (4) Book VFS Italy appointment online. (5) Submit documents at VFS centre + biometrics + visa fee. (6) Collect passport with stamped visa in 4–8 weeks typical (statutory cap 90 days). (7) Arrive in Italy. (8) Apply for Permesso di Soggiorno within 8 days at local Questura.
Universitaly Pre-Enrollment

Universitaly.it is the official Italian government portal for university pre-enrollment by international students. All Indian students applying to Italian universities must register on Universitaly and submit programme selections to their nearest Italian Consulate. The portal acts as the pre-visa gateway — without Universitaly approval, the consulate cannot process your Type D visa. Universitaly opens annually in April–May for the following September intake.
CIMEA (alternative to Dichiarazione di Valore)
The CIMEA Statement of Comparability + Statement of Verification is a fully online credential evaluation issued via cimea.it (no consulate visit). Per universitaly.it and the MUR (Ministero dell'Università e della Ricerca), Italian universities and consulates accept either CIMEA or the older Dichiarazione di Valore (DOV) at their discretion — CIMEA is an alternative, not a blanket replacement, though it has become the preferred option since January 2024. Processing time: 60 working days standard, 30 working days urgent (+€100). Fee: approximately €110–280 depending on services selected.
Pro Tip
Proof of Funds (~€594/month)
Per the 2026 Italian consular living-cost table you must show approximately €594/month (€7,128/year) for the full programme duration — roughly €7,128 (₹6.7 lakh) for 1 year, €14,256 (₹13.3 lakh) for 2 years. Acceptable proofs: bank balance in your name or sponsor's name held for at least 3-6 months, fixed deposits, education loan sanction letter from recognised Indian bank, or scholarship award letter. DSU scholarship award counts toward this requirement. Exact figure varies slightly by consulate.
