If you are planning to immigrate abroad in 2026, understanding which IELTS format you need is the first — and arguably the most important — step. IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is accepted by immigration authorities in over 140 countries, but the specific format requirement varies dramatically between countries and even between immigration pathways within the same country. Choosing the wrong format can delay your application by months or force you to retake the exam entirely. At EEC, with 27+ years of immigration experience, 50,000+ students placed globally, and 26 centres across Gujarat, we have seen this mistake hundreds of times — and this comprehensive guide exists to make sure you do not repeat it. Whether your goal is Canada PR, a UK Skilled Worker visa, Australia PR, or any other immigration pathway, this guide tells you exactly which IELTS format you need, what band score to target, and how EEC can help you achieve it.

IELTS for Immigration: Overview
IELTS comes in two primary formats: Academic and General Training (GT). The Academic format is designed for those applying to universities, professional registration bodies, and English-taught degree programmes. The General Training format is designed for immigration, work permits, and settlement applications. Both formats test the same four skills — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking — but the Reading and Writing sections differ significantly in content and difficulty level.
The Listening and Speaking sections are identical across both formats. Where they diverge is in Reading (Academic uses complex academic passages; GT uses everyday texts like advertisements, notices, and workplace documents) and Writing (Academic Task 1 asks you to describe a graph/chart; GT Task 1 asks you to write a letter). This distinction matters because band score thresholds for the same raw performance are different between the two formats. In GT Reading, you need a higher raw score to achieve the same band compared to Academic Reading — a fact that surprises many test takers.
Pro Tip
Beyond Academic and GT, there is also IELTS for UKVI (UK Visas and Immigration) — a version of IELTS that is identical in content to the regular test but administered at SELT-approved centres with additional security measures. This version is required for certain UK visa categories. We cover this in detail in the UK section below and in our dedicated IELTS UKVI guide.

Get Free Format AdviceCanada: GT for PR, Academic for Study
Canada is the most popular immigration destination for Indian IELTS test takers, and for good reason — it offers multiple pathways to permanent residency (PR) through Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs), and the Atlantic Immigration Program. For Canada PR through Express Entry, you need IELTS General Training. Your GT scores are converted to CLB (Canadian Language Benchmarks) levels, which directly feed into your CRS (Comprehensive Ranking System) score. The higher your CLB, the more CRS points you earn — making IELTS GT performance one of the single biggest factors in whether you receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA).

| IELTS GT Band | CLB Level | CRS Points (First Language) | Competitive? |
|---|---|---|---|
| L:8.0 / R:7.0 / W:7.0 / S:7.0 | CLB 9 | 124 (max for language) | Highly competitive — target this |
| L:8.0 / R:6.5 / W:6.5 / S:6.5 | CLB 8 | 112 | Good but may need PNP nomination |
| L:6.0 / R:6.0 / W:6.0 / S:6.0 | CLB 7 | 92 | Minimum for FSW eligibility |
| L:5.5 / R:5.0 / W:5.0 / S:5.0 | CLB 6 | 68 | Below FSW minimum; CEC only |
| L:5.0 / R:4.0 / W:4.0 / S:4.0 | CLB 5 | 40 | Not competitive for Express Entry |
For studying in Canada, universities require IELTS Academic with typical minimum scores of 6.0–6.5 overall, with no band below 6.0. Top institutions like the University of Toronto, UBC, and McGill may require 7.0 overall. Importantly, your Academic IELTS score cannot be used for Express Entry PR applications — only GT scores are accepted for PR by IRCC. Read our detailed guide on IELTS GT for Canada PR for band-wise strategies.
Warning
UK: UKVI for Visa, Academic for University
The UK has the most complex IELTS requirements of any immigration destination. There are three distinct IELTS products accepted in the UK: IELTS Academic (regular), IELTS for UKVI (Academic or GT, taken at SELT-approved centres), and IELTS Life Skills (Speaking and Listening only, for spouse/settlement visas). Which one you need depends entirely on your visa type and your sponsor's licence status.
For Student Route visas at degree level (Bachelor's, Master's, PhD) at a licensed sponsor institution, regular IELTS Academic is sufficient. You do not need the UKVI version. Most Russell Group universities and top UK institutions hold A-rated sponsor licences, which means they can accept regular IELTS. However, for below-degree-level programmes (foundation, pre-sessional, HND), IELTS for UKVI is mandatory. For Skilled Worker visas, Spouse visas, and Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), IELTS for UKVI is required — at a fee of approximately £228 (~₹17,000).
IELTS Life Skills is a separate, shorter test covering only Speaking and Listening. It is required for Family visas (Spouse/Partner), settlement applications, and certain extension applications. There are two levels: A1 (for initial spouse/family visas) and B1 (for ILR and settlement). IELTS Life Skills costs approximately £150 (~₹11,200). Read our full breakdown in the IELTS UKVI guide.
Pro Tip
Australia: Either for PR, Academic for Study
Australia is unique among major immigration destinations in that it accepts both IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training for skilled migration and permanent residency through the points-based visa system (Subclass 189, 190, 491). This gives Indian applicants flexibility — if you have already taken IELTS Academic for your university application, you can use the same score for your PR application without retaking the GT format. However, for studying in Australia, universities require IELTS Academic exclusively.

| Purpose | Format Accepted | Minimum Score | Points Earned |
|---|---|---|---|
| Skilled Migration (189/190/491) | Academic or GT | 6.0 each band (Competent) | 0 points (minimum) |
| Skilled Migration (Superior) | Academic or GT | 8.0 each band | 20 points |
| Skilled Migration (Proficient) | Academic or GT | 7.0 each band | 10 points |
| University Admission | Academic only | 6.0–7.0 overall | N/A |
| Partner Visa (Subclass 820/801) | Functional English | 4.5 overall (Academic or GT) | N/A |
| Graduate Visa (Subclass 485) | Academic or GT | 6.0 each band | N/A |
The big incentive in Australia is points. For the points-based system, scoring 7.0 in each band earns 10 bonus points, and scoring 8.0 in each band earns 20 bonus points. Given how competitive Australia PR invitations have become (especially for popular occupations like accounting, IT, and engineering), those 10–20 extra points can be the difference between receiving an invitation and waiting indefinitely. EEC's IELTS coaching targets Band 7+ strategies specifically for Australia-bound applicants. Explore our Australia study abroad guide for more.
Good News
New Zealand: 6.5 Minimum for Skilled Migrant
New Zealand's Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) requires a minimum IELTS overall band of 6.5 (Academic or GT) with no individual band below 6.5. This is one of the more straightforward requirements among major English-speaking destinations. For studying in New Zealand, most universities require IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall, with some postgraduate programmes requiring 7.0. New Zealand also accepts PTE Academic and TOEFL iBT for both immigration and study purposes.
For the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV), the English language requirement varies by occupation band. Band 1–3 occupations require IELTS 5.0 overall, while Band 4–5 occupations may require higher scores or an employer attestation. For Residence from Work pathways, the IELTS 6.5 minimum applies. New Zealand Immigration also offers exemptions for applicants from English-speaking countries or those who completed tertiary education in English. See our New Zealand study abroad guide for detailed university requirements.
Germany: Academic for English-Taught Programmes
Germany does not have a points-based PR system like Canada or Australia, so IELTS is primarily used for university admission to English-taught programmes. Most German universities offering English-medium Master's and Bachelor's programmes require IELTS Academic 6.0–7.0, depending on the institution and programme. Top technical universities like TU Munich, RWTH Aachen, and Heidelberg University may require 6.5–7.0, while many other universities accept 6.0.
For German-taught programmes, IELTS is not required — you need DSH-2 or TestDaF 4x4 (German language proficiency certificates) instead. However, many English-taught programmes additionally require a German A1 certificate for the student visa, even though the programme itself is in English. This is where EEC's integrated approach shines: we offer IELTS coaching alongside German A1 courses, so you can prepare for both requirements simultaneously. For the EU Blue Card (Germany's work permit for skilled professionals), English proficiency requirements depend on the employer, but many international companies accept IELTS 6.5+.
Other Countries: Ireland, USA, UAE, Singapore & France
Ireland
Ireland requires IELTS Academic for both university admission and immigration. Most Irish universities require 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0. For the Critical Skills Employment Permit and Stamp 4 (permanent residence), IELTS Academic is the standard proof of English proficiency. Ireland has emerged as a popular EU destination due to its English-speaking environment, two-year post-study work visa (Stamp 1G), and pathway to permanent residence. Explore studying in Ireland with EEC.
USA
While TOEFL has traditionally dominated the US market, IELTS Academic is now accepted by over 3,400 US institutions, including all Ivy League universities, MIT, Stanford, and Caltech. US universities typically require IELTS Academic 6.5–7.0 for graduate programmes and 6.0–6.5 for undergraduate. Unlike other countries, the USA does not use IELTS for immigration purposes — US green card and work visa processes do not require English language test scores. IELTS is purely for university admission.
UAE
The UAE accepts both IELTS Academic and GT for various visa categories. For university admission, IELTS Academic 5.5–6.5 is typical, depending on the institution. For the Golden Visa (10-year residency), IELTS is not a requirement, but for certain professional licensing bodies (medical, engineering, teaching), IELTS scores are mandatory. Dubai and Abu Dhabi have become popular study destinations for Indian students, with lower tuition fees than the UK or USA and strong post-study employment. See our UAE study abroad guide.
Singapore
Singapore's top universities — NUS, NTU, and SMU — require IELTS Academic 6.5–7.0 for most programmes. Singapore does not use IELTS for immigration or work permit purposes; English proficiency for employment is assessed through other means. However, an IELTS score can strengthen your work pass application as supporting evidence of English competency.
France
France's English-taught programmes (offered by institutions like HEC Paris, ESSEC, Sciences Po, and various Grandes Écoles) typically require IELTS Academic 6.0–7.0. For French-taught programmes, you need DELF/DALF or TCF French language certificates instead. France has been steadily increasing its English-taught programme offerings, particularly at the Master's level, making it an increasingly accessible option for Indian students. EEC offers French language courses for those considering French-taught pathways.
