CELPIP vs PTE Core vs IELTS GT is the defining comparison for every Indian targeting Canada PR in 2026. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) accepts all three tests equally for Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP), and citizenship, yet each test differs dramatically in format, scoring, fee, speed, and difficulty. Choosing the right test can mean the difference between CLB 9 and CLB 7 — a gap worth 50+ CRS points that could make or break your invitation to apply (ITA). This equally weighted three-way comparison from EEC covers CELPIP vs PTE Core vs IELTS GT across every parameter so you can pick the test that maximises your CLB score, CRS points, and chances of Canada PR.

IRCC treats CELPIP-General, PTE Core, and IELTS General Training as equally valid for all economic immigration programmes. Whether you are applying through Express Entry (Federal Skilled Worker, Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Trades), a Provincial Nominee Program, or for Canadian citizenship, scores from any of these three tests carry the same weight. The key differences lie in how each test measures your English, what the test experience feels like, and how easy it is for you personally to achieve your target CLB level.

Format Comparison — How Each Test Works
CELPIP-General
CELPIP is 100% computer-based with Canadian English context. It has four sections: Listening (47–55 min, Canadian accents), Reading (55–60 min, Canadian content), Writing (53–60 min, email + survey response), and Speaking (15–20 min, recorded responses to prompts). All scoring is done by human raters. The Canadian context means passages involve Canadian cities, workplace scenarios, and social situations. CELPIP scores directly map to CLB levels (3–12) with no conversion needed.
PTE Core
PTE Core is the newest test, accepted by IRCC since November 2023. It uses AI scoring and has integrated tasks. The sections are: Speaking & Writing (combined, 54–67 min, includes Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image, Write Email, Summarise Written Text), Reading (29–30 min), and Listening (30–43 min). The "Repeat Sentence" task is unique to PTE and heavily weighted — you hear a sentence and repeat it exactly. PTE Core scores (10–90) must be converted to CLB using the official IRCC conversion table.
IELTS General Training
IELTS GT is the most familiar test format globally. Listening (30 min, 40 questions), Reading (60 min, 3 sections with everyday and workplace texts), Writing (60 min, letter + essay), and Speaking (11–14 min, face-to-face interview with examiner). Available in paper and CD-IELTS formats. Band scores (0–9) are converted to CLB using the official IRCC conversion table.

CRS Points Impact — Why CLB Level Matters Enormously
← Swipe left to see more columns →
| CLB Level | CRS Points (First Language) | Total Language Max | Impact |
|---|---|---|---|
| CLB 7 | 17 per ability = 68 | 68 | Minimum for FSWP eligibility |
| CLB 8 | 23 per ability = 92 | 92 | +24 points over CLB 7 |
| CLB 9 | 31 per ability = 124 | 124 | +56 points over CLB 7, +32 over CLB 8 |
| CLB 10+ | 34 per ability = 136 | 136 | +68 points over CLB 7, maximum possible |
The difference between CLB 7 and CLB 9 is 56 CRS points — often the difference between receiving an ITA and waiting indefinitely. In 2025–2026, Express Entry general draws have had cutoffs around 480–520. A single-level CLB improvement (e.g., from CLB 8 to CLB 9) adds 32 CRS points. This makes your English test choice and preparation the single highest-ROI activity in your entire Express Entry journey. Invest time and money in achieving the highest CLB possible.
Warning
Fee Comparison — 2026
CELPIP is the cheapest at ₹12,500, IELTS GT costs ₹16,250, and PTE Core is the most expensive at ₹17,640. However, fee should be the last consideration — the CRS impact of a higher CLB is worth far more than the ₹1,000–5,000 difference in test fees. Choose the test where you can score highest, not the cheapest one.
Results Speed — When You Get Your Scores
PTE Core is fastest at 2–5 days, CELPIP takes 4–5 business days, and IELTS GT takes 13 days for paper or 3–5 days for CD-IELTS. If you are in a rush to submit your Express Entry profile or respond to a PNP nomination, PTE Core or CD-IELTS offers the fastest turnaround. CD-IELTS also gives you access to OSR (One Skill Retake), which PTE Core and CELPIP do not offer.
Availability in India — Test Centre Access
IELTS and PTE are available in 50+ cities across India, making them the most accessible. CELPIP is available in approximately 9 Indian cities (Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Pune, Chandigarh, Kolkata). If you live in a smaller city, IELTS GT or PTE Core may be your only convenient options. CELPIP candidates in smaller cities may need to travel to the nearest CELPIP centre.
Section-by-Section Comparison — Speaking, Writing, Reading, Listening
← Swipe left to see more columns →
| Section | CELPIP | PTE Core | IELTS GT |
|---|---|---|---|
| Speaking | Recorded responses to prompts (AI + human rated) | Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image (AI scored) | Face-to-face interview with human examiner (11–14 min) |
| Writing | Email + Survey response (human rated) | Write Email + Summarise Written Text (AI scored) | Letter (formal/informal) + Essay (human rated) |
| Reading | Canadian context passages, 4 question types | Multiple-choice, reorder, fill-in-blanks | Everyday/workplace texts, T/F/NG, matching, completion |
| Listening | Canadian accent audio, note-taking allowed | Academic/everyday audio, integrated tasks | British/Australian/American audio, 4 sections |
Key differences in Speaking: CELPIP and PTE Core require you to speak into a microphone (no human interviewer), while IELTS GT features a face-to-face conversation. If you are nervous about speaking to a camera/microphone, IELTS's human interaction may feel more natural. If you prefer controlled, timed responses without the unpredictability of a conversation, CELPIP or PTE Core may suit you better.
Key differences in Writing: CELPIP requires an email and a survey response (practical, shorter). PTE Core requires an email and a summarise-written-text task (requires reading comprehension + writing). IELTS GT requires a letter (formal, semi-formal, or informal) and a 250-word essay. If you dislike essay writing, CELPIP or PTE Core's shorter writing tasks may be easier for you.
Easiest for Indians — Which Test Suits Your Strengths?
There is no universally "easiest" test — it depends on your individual strengths. However, general patterns emerge for Indian test-takers:
PTE Core tends to suit Indian students who: type fast, have good pronunciation and can repeat sentences accurately, are comfortable with AI-scored environments, and want the fastest results. The "Repeat Sentence" task is heavily weighted and can significantly boost your score if you have strong auditory memory.
CELPIP suits candidates who: are comfortable with Canadian English and workplace scenarios, prefer computer-based testing with a variety of short tasks, and want a test where scores map directly to CLB without conversion tables. CELPIP is the only test designed specifically for Canadian immigration context.
IELTS GT suits candidates who: are most familiar with the IELTS format (the most widely prepared-for test in India), prefer face-to-face Speaking, want the safety net of OSR on CD-IELTS, and have strong essay writing skills. IELTS has the most preparation resources, mock tests, and coaching available in India.
“I scored CLB 8 on IELTS GT (L:7.5, R:6.5, W:7.0, S:7.0) but needed CLB 9 for a competitive CRS. EEC suggested I try PTE Core because my pronunciation is strong. I scored CLB 9 on PTE Core on the first attempt — the Repeat Sentence tasks boosted my Speaking score. That extra 32 CRS points got me my ITA within 3 months. Always try the test that plays to your strengths.”
— Amit R., Canada PR — Express Entry 2025, PTE Core CLB 9
Best for CLB 9+ (High CRS) — Analysis
For CLB 9+ (the target for competitive Express Entry profiles), each test has a different difficulty profile. On IELTS GT, CLB 9 requires L:8.0, R:7.0, W:7.0, S:7.0 — Listening 8.0 is the challenging part (max 5 wrong out of 40). On CELPIP, CLB 9 requires 9 in each skill — the consistent threshold across all sections makes it predictable but demanding. On PTE Core, CLB 9 ranges from 60–87 across sections — the Writing requirement (79+) is the hardest part for most Indians.
EEC's data-driven recommendation: if you are targeting CLB 9, take a diagnostic test in all three formats. Many candidates score CLB 9 in one test but only CLB 8 in another due to format differences. The ₹7,500 investment in a diagnostic + preparation is trivial compared to the 32 CRS point gain from CLB 8 to CLB 9. Book a free diagnostic at EEC.
Decision Flowchart — Which Test Should You Take?
Budget Priority?
If budget is the #1 factor: CELPIP (₹12,500) is cheapest. But remember: a higher CLB is worth far more than ₹5,000 in fee savings.
Typing Speed?
If you type 50+ WPM: PTE Core and CELPIP (100% computer) suit you. If you prefer handwriting: paper IELTS is an option (but CD-IELTS recommended for OSR).
Speaking Comfort?
Prefer face-to-face conversation? IELTS GT. Comfortable with microphone + timed prompts? CELPIP or PTE Core.
Urgency?
Need results in 2–5 days? PTE Core or CD-IELTS. Can wait 5+ days? CELPIP. Can wait 13 days? Paper IELTS.
Safety Net?
Want OSR (retake 1 section)? Only CD-IELTS offers this. CELPIP and PTE Core require full retake if you miss a section.
Location?
CELPIP: ~9 cities. IELTS/PTE: 50+ cities. If you are outside major metros, IELTS or PTE may be more convenient.
