After your IELTS test, IDP issues your result in two forms: the Electronic IELTS Test Report Form (eTRF), which you download from your IELTS candidate account, and the Printed Test Report Form (TRF), the paper copy collected from the test centre. Both are official and equally valid. The key visual difference is simple — the electronic version downloaded from your IELTS account does not include the test centre stamp or the administrator's signature, while the printed copy collected from the centre does. Before submitting your results anywhere, always check with the receiving organisation to confirm which format they require. This guide explains exactly what each format contains, when to use which, and how Indian students access both.

There is only one IELTS result — your band scores never change between formats. What differs is the document you present to a university, employer, or immigration authority. The eTRF is a digitally issued PDF carrying an online verification stamp, designed for fast electronic submission and online verification by the receiving organisation. The printed TRF is a physical, security-printed document bearing the official test centre stamp and the administrator's signature, intended for in-person or postal submission. Note that IELTS does not issue a separate “certificate” — the Test Report Form is your official certificate, whether electronic or printed.
Pro Tip
Electronic IELTS Test Report Form (eTRF)
The eTRF is downloaded directly from your IELTS candidate account once results are released. It is the fastest way to share your scores, especially for online applications and university portals that verify results electronically. Key characteristics:
• Downloaded directly from your IELTS candidate account.
• Includes an online verification stamp so organisations can confirm authenticity digitally.
• Does not include the physical test centre stamp.
• Does not include the administrator's signature.
Good News

Printed IELTS Test Report Form (TRF)
The printed TRF is the traditional paper result, collected from (or couriered by) your test centre. It is a security-printed document built for physical and postal submission. Key characteristics:
• Collected from the test centre.
• Includes the official test centre stamp.
• Includes the administrator's signature.
• Also contains the necessary security and verification features.
Each candidate is normally entitled to one printed TRF. Additional certified copies can usually be sent directly to recognising organisations on your behalf — check your test centre's policy on extra TRFs and overseas dispatch.

“Your IELTS band scores are identical on both documents. The only question that matters is which format the organisation you are applying to wants to receive.”

Which Format Do Organisations Accept?
The most important thing to remember is that both versions are official and valid— however, different organisations may have different document requirements. Before submitting your IELTS results, always check with the institution or organisation you are applying to and confirm whether they accept the electronic version, require the printed version, or accept both.
Typically accept the eTRF: most overseas universities with online application portals, electronic document-verification systems, and many immigration e-portals that verify results directly with IDP. May require the printed TRF: some professional registration bodies, certain consulates, and organisations that mandate a physically stamped and signed copy. When in doubt, keep bothready — the eTRF for fast online submission and the printed copy as a physical backup.

How to Download the eTRF and Collect the TRF
Downloading your eTRF
Log in to your IELTS candidate account (the same account used to book your test) on results day. Your eTRF appears once results are released — 13 calendar days after a paper-based test, or 3–5 business days after Computer-Delivered IELTS (CD-IELTS). Download the PDF and share it directly with recognising organisations, or use IDP's online verification (TRF Verification Service) so the receiving body can confirm your scores against the official database.
Collecting your printed TRF
The printed TRF is available from your test centre on or shortly after results day. You can collect it in person with a valid ID, authorise someone to collect it on your behalf, or request a courier where the centre offers it. If you need certified copies sent to universities or immigration authorities, your centre can usually dispatch additional TRFs directly — ask about the number of free copies and any charge for extras.
Validity, Security & Verification
Whichever format you submit, your IELTS result is valid for 2 years from the test date for most universities and visa applications. Both the eTRF and printed TRF carry verification features: the eTRF's online verification stamp lets organisations confirm authenticity through IDP's verification portal, while the printed TRF combines the official test centre stamp, administrator's signature, and security printing. Recognising organisations increasingly verify results directly with IDP electronicallyrather than relying solely on the physical paper — which is exactly why the eTRF has become so widely accepted.
