Public universities charge only €726.72 per semester for non-EU students plus €25.20 ÖH (student union) fee — about ₹1.5L/year total tuition. Private universities and Fachhochschulen (FH) cost €5,000–15,000/year. Combined with €10,000–14,000/year living costs, Austria is one of Europe's most affordable destinations.
Indian students apply for a National Visa D (up to 6 months) at the Austrian Embassy/VFS in India, which lets you enter Austria. Within the validity, you apply for the "Aufenthaltsbewilligung – Student" (Residence Permit – Student) at the local MA35 office. Valid for 12 months, renewable. You must show €722.58/month (under 24) or €1,308.39/month (24 and older) in funds.
The Meldezettel is Austria's mandatory address registration. You MUST register at the local Meldeamt within 3 days of moving into any accommodation. Bring your signed rental contract (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) and passport. Without Meldezettel, you cannot open a bank account, get a SIM contract, or finalize your residence permit.
Yes — up to 20 hours/week during term on a Residence Permit – Student. Your employer must file an employment notification with AMS (Public Employment Service) before you start. Internships (paid or unpaid) also require AMS notification. Above ~€551/month, you become self-insured via ÖGK through your employer.
For English-taught Masters (widely available at WU Vienna, TU Wien, Uni Vienna, MODUL, IST Austria), IELTS 6.5+ is enough. For Bachelors, most programs are German-taught — you'll need C1 German (ÖSD or TestDaF). Even for English programs, learning German A2–B1 is crucial for daily life, part-time jobs, and making friends.
After graduating from an Austrian university, you can apply for a 12-month Job Seeker visa to stay and look for qualified employment. The RWR Card for Graduates of Austrian Universities has NO points system, NO labour-market test, and NO statutory minimum salary — your salary must simply match the applicable collective bargaining agreement for the role. Other RWR categories do have thresholds (e.g. Other Key Workers €3,465/mo gross × 14 payments in 2026). RWR Card counts toward Austrian permanent residency after 5 years.
