Taxes and Employment Contracts

Taxes: If you earn income, you may owe income tax (approx. 20–42%) depending on annual earnings. However, if annual gross < €11,000, no tax. Employers usually deduct this automatically in payroll.
Contracts: Austrian jobs use Dienstvertrag (employment contract). Ensure your contract states gross monthly salary (so you can calculate net pay). For small or freelance gigs, employers still must register you with AMS and social insurance.
Notice Periods: Typical probation is up to one month. After that, either side needs 6 weeks’ notice (unless agreed otherwise). Always keep a copy of your signed contract.

Packing Essentials from India

Clothing and Gear: Pack at least one heavy winter coat, warm hats, gloves, and boots – winters can be much colder than India. Thermal layers are helpful. If you have specialized medications or personal items, bring an ample supply.
Adapters and Electronics: Austria uses Type C/F plugs (230V). Bring adapters/converters. A good-quality power bank can help during travel.
Special Items: Stock up on favorite spices, tea, or medicines that might be expensive or hard to find. Also bring photocopies of important documents (passport pages, admission letter) in case originals get lost.

First-Week Shopping: Home and Kitchen

Furniture & Bedding: If your room isn’t furnished, IKEA is a one-stop shop (dorm essentials, kitchenware). Stores like Mömax or Leiner also carry budget furniture. Used furniture shops or Facebook Marketplace (Willhaben) can save money.
Groceries: Common chains are Spar, Billa, Penny, Hofer (Lidl), and Merkur. Prices are moderate; Hofer (Austrian Lidl) is cheapest. Buy basics: bread, milk (Milch), yogurt (Joghurt), fresh produce. Note: Germans often have separate butter vs. “Streichfett” (spread). Try local bread (Brot) and cheeses.

Allergens: Common allergens (nuts, milk, eggs) are highlighted on labels. If you are vegetarian or lactose-intolerant, check for “Rind” (beef) or “Milch” (milk) in ingredient lists.
Packaged Foods: Understand portion sizes (100g values are given). For packaged Indian foods (curry mixes), check if any added coloring (Farbstoff) or preservatives (Konservierungsstoffe) if you avoid them.

Bring from India: Heavy winter coat, woolens, and good snow boots (outdoor stores here sell them but at high prices). Umbrella and rain jacket are useful.
Buy in Austria: Socks, light layers, and casual clothes are easy to find. Sports gear (bike helmets, hiking boots) can be bought here in quality. Electronics (laptops, phones) are more expensive; consider bringing them if possible.
Winter Supplies: Buy thermal undergarments and thick socks if you didn’t pack them; drugstores (DM, Bipa) carry them cheaply.

Winter Preparation

Cost of Living: Generally, Vienna > Innsbruck/Salzburg > Graz/Linz > smaller towns. Rent is the biggest variable. University towns tend to have more affordable options for students.
Universities and Jobs: Big cities host multiple universities and more part-time work (in cafes, institutes). Small towns often have one university but a close-knit community feel.

Vienna (Wien)

Private universities and Fachhochschulen (FH) cost €5,000–15,000/year. Combined with €10,000–14,000/year living costs, Austria is one of Europe's most affordable destinations.

Indian students apply for a National Visa D (up to 6 months) at the Austrian Embassy/VFS in India, which lets you enter Austria. Within the validity, you apply for the "Aufenthaltsbewilligung – Student" (Residence Permit – Student) at the local MA35 office. Valid for 12 months, renewable. You must show €722.58/month (under 24) or €1,308.39/month (24 and older) in funds.

The Meldezettel is Austria's mandatory address registration. You MUST register at the local Meldeamt within 3 days of moving into any accommodation. The RWR Card for Graduates of Austrian Universities has NO points system, NO labour-market test, and NO statutory minimum salary — your salary must simply match the applicable collective bargaining agreement for the role. Other RWR categories do have thresholds (e.g. Other Key Workers €3,465/mo gross × 14 payments in 2026). RWR Card counts toward Austrian permanent residency after 5 years.
