The dMAT (digital Master Assessment Test)is the new standardised study-aptitude test that selected international applicants must complete for admission to Master’s degree programmes in Germany. For Indian applicants in the affected degree fields, it now sits inside the APS process itself — which makes understanding its exact structure, question types and timing a practical necessity, not a curiosity. This guide decodes the test section by section, using the official Preparatory Materials for Test Takers published by g.a.s.t. (the TestDaF Institute)— the same body that develops and centrally evaluates the exam.

A Test Built Like a Psychometric Instrument
The dMAT is not an improvised screening quiz. It was developed in close professional collaboration with German universities — the test format was designed in cooperation with the Universities of Ulm and Kassel, with the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service)supporting development — and its format follows the internationally recognised standards for psychodiagnostic testing. Three design properties matter for how you prepare:
It is standardised. Every participant answers comparable material under identical conditions, which is precisely what allows German universities to compare applicants across very different national education systems. It is centrally evaluatedat the TestDaF Institute in Bochum — no local examiner discretion. And it is digital: computer-based delivery at authorised test centres, with the timing enforced per subtest, not per sitting. In short: the dMAT rewards preparation that targets its exact task types, because the task types do not vary.

Exam Structure: Core Module + Subject Module
The dMAT consists of two parts. The Core Module measures general study aptitude through three subtests of cognitive ability. The Subject Moduletests subject-specific aptitude — the ability to apply knowledge acquired during your Bachelor’s degree, not to recall memorised facts. The exam itself runs about three hours, with a 30-minute break between the two parts.

Note the arithmetic: 75 seconds per figure sequence, 75 seconds per equation system, 75 seconds per Latin square. The official instruction for every subtest is the same — be as quick and accurate as possible, and if you do not know an answer, guess. There is no option to return with a calculator, rough paper or extra time: you may not take notes at any point in the exam.

Subtest 1 — Figure Sequences
You are shown a series of pictures (matrices) in which figures change their position, colour and/or orientation from one matrix to the next according to specific rules. Your task is to continue the series logically and determine what the next two matrices look like, choosing from the given response options.
The movement rules, precisely
The official materials define a closed rule set — and knowing it cold is most of the battle. Figures can change colour, rotate around their own axis, and move vertically, horizontally or diagonally within the matrix. A figure cannot switch from one type of diagonal movement to another. Movement, colour or orientation can also change by x + 1: a figure that moves one step between matrices 1 and 2 moves two steps between matrices 2 and 3, then three steps, and so on. Figures never disappear and never overlap. And when a figure reaches an outer boundary, it does one of exactly two things: it bounces off, or it moves along the outer boundary.

Subtest 2 — Mathematical Equations
Each task presents a system of equations with unknowns written as letters. You must find the numbers that make all equations correct simultaneously. The constraints are friendly and worth memorising: every letter is an integer between 1 and 20, and there is always exactly one solution. Low-difficulty systems use two unknowns; at high difficulty you will juggle four (A, B, C, D) across four chained equations.
The substitution method the solutions use
Every official solution path follows the same pattern: find the most constrained equation (sometimes a direct value like B = 6, more often a simple relation like B = 2 × A), substitute it into the equation with the most unknowns, reduce, and back-substitute. In the official high-difficulty example, the system A − B + C − D = 2, 10×B = C, 5×B = A, 11 + B = D collapses to a single equation in B (13B − 11 = 2, so B = 1) once the other three relations are substituted in. The skill being tested is not algebra knowledge — it is disciplined mental bookkeeping at speed, without paper.

Subtest 3 — Latin Squares
The third subtest presents a 5×5 grid, partially filled with the letters A–E. Each letter may appear only once in each row and each column. One cell contains a question mark; your task is to determine which letter belongs there, choosing from the response options beside the grid. If this sounds like a miniature Sudoku, that is exactly the right instinct — and the same solving discipline applies.
Easy items resolve in a single glance: four of the five letters already appear in the question mark’s row or column, so only one candidate remains. Harder items require you to fill neighbouring cells mentally first — the official solution paths chain two to four forced deductions (“in column β, C and D are missing; C is already in row 4, so D must occupy β4; therefore C replaces the question mark”). Since you cannot write anything down, train yourself to hold one or two derived placements in working memory while you scan for the next forced cell.

Part 2 — The Subject Module
After the 30-minute break comes the discipline-specific half of the dMAT. The format: you read a text (the “input”), which may contain figures, tables and formulas, and answer single-choice questions with four options each — exactly one correct. You have 90 minutes for the entire subject test. The production of the subject modules is based on extensive scientific studies by experts, so the content is representative of the respective field of study. Critically, the tasks are knowledge-based but application-oriented: the official materials state plainly that the dMAT requires subject knowledge and application skills, not memorised factual knowledge.
What the sample module looks like inside
The published practice exercises come from the Computer Science module and illustrate the level well. One exercise presents the four goals of computer security — integrity, authenticity, confidentiality, availability — then asks you to classify real attack scenarios: Heartbleed (reading random server memory) primarily violates confidentiality; ransomware that alters a running system attacks integrity; bypassing Single Sign-On violates authenticity; a Denial-of-Service attack targets availability. A second exercise builds from AND/OR/NOT gates through truth tables to the canonical disjunctive normal form (CDNF) and asks you to derive minterms and read combinational circuits. Nothing exotic — but you must use the concept within minutes of reading it, not merely recognise the term.

How to Prepare: A No-Notes Training Plan
The dMAT’s design tells you how to train for it. Because the task types are fixed and the instructions live only in the preparatory materials, preparation is less about accumulating knowledge and more about automating four specific skills:
1. Internalise the task rules before you ever set a timer.Read the instruction pages for all three core subtests until you can recite the Figure Sequences movement rules and the equation constraints (integers 1–20, unique solution) from memory.
2. Practise under exam conditions — which means no pen. The official exercises exist in low, medium and high difficulty precisely so you can climb the ladder. The materials repeat the same sentence for every subtest: practise without taking notes, because you will have no helping tools in the exam either.
3. Drill to the clock. 75 seconds per item across all three core subtests is an unforgiving average. Timed sets of five items teach you the most valuable exam skill the format allows: recognising within 20 seconds whether an item is a solve-now or a guess-and-move.
4. Never leave a blank.The official instruction is explicit — if you do not know an answer, guess which one might be correct. An unanswered item can earn nothing; eliminating even one response option makes a guess mathematically worthwhile.
