What are you taking French A1 for?

French-category Express Entry

Category draws for French speakers have cut far below the general rounds. The gate is NCLC 7 in all four abilities on TEF Canada or TCF Canada, roughly CEFR B2, which is several levels above where a beginner starts.

The 25 and 50 point bonus

NCLC 7 or higher in French adds 25 CRS points on its own, and 50 when your English is CLB 5 or better. This applies in every draw, not only the French ones.

Francophone streams outside Quebec

The Francophone Community Immigration Pilot sets a lower bar of NCLC 5 for its designated communities, and several provinces run their own French-speaking pathways. Check the current rules on the official pages linked below before planning around any of them.

Where an A1 course sits on the road to NCLC 7

A1

Where this course starts

Introductions, everyday phrases, the sound system. 22 live hours with a teacher.

A2 to B1

Ordinary conversation

Everyday exchanges and written tasks. Most learners need considerably longer here than at A1.

B2

Roughly NCLC 7

The level the French Express Entry category asks for, proven through TEF Canada or TCF Canada.

Said plainly: A1 on its own earns no CRS points. Only an approved test result at NCLC 7 or above counts toward Express Entry. If you already read French and need test technique, an A1 course is not what you want. It is the right starting point if you are beginning from zero and would rather have a teacher than an app.

Where you sit the French test

IRCC accepts both TEF Canada and TCF Canada for economic immigration. What differs is where you can sit them and how far ahead you have to book.

TEF Canada

TEF Canada sittings are concentrated at Alliance Française centres, which means the big cities.

TCF Canada

TCF Canada runs through a wider network that reaches smaller cities as well.

Seats are the bottleneck, not the exam

In Toronto and Vancouver, seats fill roughly 4 to 8 weeks ahead during peak Express Entry months, and some quarterly registration windows have filled within days of opening. Plan the level first and the sitting second: booking a date you are not ready for wastes the fee, and the next seat may be two months away.

Checked 2026-08-07. Each centre sets its own dates and fees, so confirm with the centre before planning around a date.

Immigration routes through Ontario

Provincial streams change often, and one repealed in a single regulatory update leaves old advice pointing at a route that no longer exists. Rather than reprint stream names that may already have moved, check Ontario's own page for what is open today.

Official Ontario immigration information

Link checked 2026-08-07. The federal thresholds are steadier: French-category Express Entry needs NCLC 7 in all four abilities, and the Francophone Community Immigration Pilot sets NCLC 5.

French A1 in Hamilton, common questions

What time are the classes in Hamilton?

The 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM IST batch runs at 8:30 AM - 9:30 AM in Hamilton during Eastern Time standard time, and 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM while daylight saving is in effect. Classes run Mon-Fri, one hour a day.

How many hours of teaching do I get in total?

22 hours of live teaching: 22 classes of 1 hour, 5 a week across roughly 4 weeks. Platform access runs for 30 days.

What does it cost from Hamilton, and in which currency am I charged?

The course is ₹7,500, which is about C$110 at current rates. You are charged in Indian rupees; the Canadian figure is only for comparison, and your bank's rate on the day will differ slightly. Coaching bought inside Canada generally runs C$200 to C$400.

Does EEC have an office in Hamilton?

No. EEC's centres are in India, and everything offered on this page is delivered online over Zoom by the same teachers who teach in those centres. There is no Hamilton branch, and nobody will meet you in person.

Will this course get me the NCLC 7 I need for Express Entry?

Not on its own, and we would rather say so plainly. This is an A1 beginner course. NCLC 7 in all four abilities is roughly CEFR B2, which is several levels further on, and it has to be proven through TEF Canada or TCF Canada. A1 is where you start that road, not where it ends.

How much is French actually worth in Express Entry?

NCLC 7 or above adds 25 CRS points on its own, and 50 when your English is CLB 5 or better. Separately, French-category draws have been cutting well below the general rounds, which is why French ability has become the strongest single lever available to many candidates.

TEF Canada or TCF Canada, which should I take?

IRCC accepts both for economic immigration. They differ in format and in how they are marked, so the sensible order is to reach the level first and choose the test afterwards, based on which format suits you and what is available near you.

Do I need French for immigration through Ontario?

Not usually as a requirement, but it can help. Francophone pathways outside Quebec generally ask NCLC 5 or higher, and the federal French category asks NCLC 7. Because provincial streams change without much notice, check Ontario's own immigration page for what is open before planning around any single route.
