Why an honest cost estimate matters
The single biggest reason Indian students underestimate study-abroad budgets is treating "tuition" as the headline number. In reality, tuition is often 30-50% of total Year 1 cost. Living expenses, visa-file funds (which sit blocked for months), health insurance, mandatory deposits, flights, and one-time test-prep + application fees push the real Year 1 figure 2-3× higher than the brochure quote.
This calculator uses the same numeric data powering EEC's country comparison tool — audited every quarter from official government and university sources. The full breakdown gives you a number you can actually take to a bank or family discussion.
What's included in the calculation
Tuition — average of min/max for the chosen level + field. Field multipliers: CS +5%, Business +10%, Medical +40% over engineering baseline.
Living costs — average of min/max for the chosen city tier + lifestyle. Metro cities cost ~10% more; lean lifestyle saves 15%; comfortable lifestyle adds 25%.
Visa fee — country-specific application fee, in native currency converted to INR.
Funds requirement — the amount you must show in a GIC, blocked account, or liquid funds before the visa interview. Refundable after arrival in most cases. Not technically a "cost" but it's capital you must source.
Flights — round-trip economy estimate from major Indian airports. Toggle off if irrelevant.
Insurance — mandatory health insurance, native-currency average.
Test prep + application fees — IELTS/PTE coaching + visa application fees in India (₹35,000 default).
Loan interest — yearly interest on principal at the rate you provide. Loan repayment principal is excluded (it's separate from study cost).
How to read the results
The hero stat shows Year 1 total. This is what you must arrange before flying out. The vs-India-MBA percentage benchmarks the total against ₹25L (typical top Indian MBA cost) so you can frame the investment in familiar terms.
The bar chart shows year-by-year stacked composition — recurring (purple), one-time (fuchsia), loan interest (red). Year 1 is always the tallest because of one-time costs.
The detailed table breaks down each year's components. The bottom row compares total against the India top MBA benchmark.
The cheapest and most expensive paths
For Indian students on tight budgets, Germany, France, Italy, Czech Republic, and Hungary offer free or very low tuition (€0-€3k/yr). Living costs in tier-2 European cities can keep year-1 total under ₹15-18L for a Masters. Note: Norway and Finland now charge non-EU tuition (NOK 130k–528k and €8k–€18k respectively).
The USA, UK, Canada, and Australia sit at the top — Year 1 PG estimates routinely cross ₹35-50L for metro universities + comfortable lifestyle, before loan interest.
Loans, scholarships, and ROI
Use the loan toggle to see how interest impacts year-1 cost. A ₹15L loan at 10% adds ₹1.5L/yr in interest alone. Multiplied across study years + post-study repayment runway, loan cost can equal 50% of original principal.
Scholarships are not modeled here — most are merit-based and university-specific. As a rough adjustment, subtract 25-50% from tuition if you're targeting institutions like DSU (Italy), DAAD (Germany), Chevening (UK), Fulbright (USA), or in-house tuition waivers.
For a true ROI view (cost vs. expected first-job salary), use our ROI calculator after Phase 3 ships.
What the calculator can't predict
Exchange rate movements. We snapshot FX quarterly; a 5% INR depreciation against EUR adds ~₹50-80k to a German PG estimate. Plan with a 10% buffer.
City-specific deviations. Stockholm, Zurich, Geneva, San Francisco, NYC, Sydney CBD, and Toronto downtown are 30-50% above the metro average. Conversely, Munich student dorms, Helsinki suburbs, or Quebec City run 20-30% below.
Personal lifestyle variability. One student spends ₹8k/mo on food; another spends ₹25k. The lifestyle slider is a starting point, not a prediction.
