The COE is issued by the Ministry of Justice in Japan. The university applies for this. Without original COE, the Indian Consulate cannot issue the visa.

Common questions about Japan.

Certificate of Eligibility. It is the most critical document issued by the Japanese Immigration Bureau. Your university applies for this on your behalf. Without COE, you cannot apply for a Student Visa.

From 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027, the Indian-passport single-entry Japan visa fee is ₹500 (was ₹450 from 1 April 2025 – 31 March 2026) — as published by the Embassy of Japan in India (in.emb-japan.go.jp/itpr_en/visa.html). Multiple-entry visas are roughly ₹1,000 (double) / ₹2,000 (multi) on the same schedule. VFS service charges apply on top.

Yes. The MEXT Scholarship is fully funded — covers tuition, airfare, and a monthly stipend of ¥117,000 (Bachelor), ¥144,000 (Master), or ¥145,000 (PhD) (non-degree research ¥143,000). Application is via the Embassy of Japan in New Delhi (Embassy Track) usually April–May for the following academic year.

Yes. You can work 28 Hours/Week during sessions and 40 Hours/Week during vacations. You need to apply for 'Permission to Engage in Activity other than that Permitted' at the airport or immigration.

For English-taught programs, No. However, for part-time jobs and social life, basic Japanese (N5/N4) is highly recommended. For PR, higher proficiency is needed.

Standard PR takes 10 years. However, the Highly Skilled Professional (HSP) point system allows you to get PR in just 1 to 3 Years based on your education, salary, age, and Japanese skills.
