IELTS vs IELTS UKVI 2026 — same test format, same 0–9 scoring, same difficulty. The only difference is certification: IELTS UKVI is a Secure English Language Test (SELT) accepted by UK Home Office for visa applications, while regular IELTS is for university admission worldwide. Fee in India: ₹19,250 UKVI vs ₹19,000 regular — only ₹250 more. Take UKVI from the start if UK-bound.
IELTS vs IELTS UKVI — Core Difference
IELTS UKVI (UK Visas and Immigration) and regular IELTS use the same test format, content, scoring scale (0–9) and difficulty. The only difference: IELTS UKVI is recognised as a Secure English Language Test (SELT) accepted by the UK Home Office for visa purposes. Regular IELTS Academic / General Training is accepted for university admission worldwide but NOT for UK visa applications. IELTS UKVI uses a stricter test administration protocol — the Test Report Form has additional UKVI certification details.
When to Take Each Version
Take IELTS UKVI if applying for UK Student Route visa (Tier 4), UK Skilled Worker visa, UK Spouse / Partner visa, UK Family visa, or UK Settlement (ILR). Take regular IELTS if applying for university admission only (UK universities accept regular IELTS for admission), Canada PR (IRCC accepts regular IELTS GT), Australia / NZ skilled migration, or US / Canada university admission. Indian students applying for UK Student visa MUST take the UKVI version — regular IELTS will be rejected at visa application.
IELTS UKVI Fee in India — ₹19,250

IELTS UKVI fee for 2026 in India: ₹19,250 (Academic + General Training) — only ₹250 more than regular IELTS ₹19,000. IELTS Life Skills A1/B1 (for spouse / partner / settlement visa) — ₹18,000. IELTS UKVI is available at IDP centres in Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Kochi and 28+ additional locations. British Council exited IELTS India in July 2021 — IDP is now the exclusive provider. Book via ieltsidpindia.com.

UK Universities — Regular IELTS or UKVI?
UK universities accept BOTH regular IELTS Academic and IELTS UKVI Academic for university admission — same test, same scoring. BUT for the UK Student Route visa, you must have taken IELTS UKVI Academic (or PTE UKVI Academic / LanguageCert UKVI). Many UK universities clarify on their admission page: "We accept IELTS Academic for admission, but please take IELTS UKVI Academic for visa compliance." Save yourself a retake — take IELTS UKVI from the start if UK-bound.
Scoring — Identical to Regular IELTS
Same scoring scale (0–9 in 0.5 increments), same test format (Listening 30 min, Reading 60 min, Writing 60 min, Speaking 11–14 min), same difficulty across both. Your score on regular IELTS would be identical to your score on IELTS UKVI. The only difference is the Test Report Form (TRF) certification — UKVI TRF has additional security features acceptable to UK Home Office.
Cannot Reuse Regular IELTS for UK Visa
UK Home Office accepts ONLY SELT-tagged test results for visa applications. If you took regular IELTS, you must retake IELTS UKVI before submitting the UK visa application. Same goes for PTE: regular PTE Academic does NOT work; you need PTE UKVI Academic. Indian students who take regular IELTS first for university admission, then need to retake IELTS UKVI for visa, lose ₹19,000 + 1–2 months delay. EEC recommends taking IELTS UKVI from the start if UK is the target.
