The LanguageCert Academic SELT at CEFR B2 level is the specific test required for the UK Student Route visa (formerly Tier 4 Student visa). If you are an Indian student planning to study at a UK university in 2026, this comprehensive Academic SELT test — covering Speaking, Listening, Reading, and Writing — is your pathway to proving English proficiency for UKVI. This guide from EEC covers everything about the LanguageCert Academic SELT: test format, the CAS connection, score requirements, preparation timeline, comparison with IELTS Academic UKVI, and how EEC combines test coaching with FREE UK university counseling.

UK Student Route Requirements

The UK Student Route visa requires proof of English at CEFR B2 level (upper intermediate) in all 4 skills: Speaking, Listening, Reading, and Writing. This is the highest CEFR level required for any UK visa type. The LanguageCert Academic SELT at B2 is one of the accepted SELT tests for this visa category. See our guide on which LanguageCert test for your UK visa for the complete decision tree.

Good News

LanguageCert Academic SELT satisfies BOTH UK Student Route AND Australian student visa requirements. If you are applying to universities in both countries, one test covers both — saving time and money. Read our LanguageCert for Australia visa guide for score requirements.

CAS and English Proof

When a UK university issues your CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies), it will reference your English language qualification. The process works as follows:

1. You take the LanguageCert Academic SELT (B2) and receive your result.
2. You share your LanguageCert result with your sponsoring university.
3. The university confirms your English level meets their requirements and references it in your CAS.
4. When you apply for the Student Route visa, UKVI verifies your LanguageCert result using the Unique Reference Number (URN) on your certificate.

Pro Tip

Some UK universities have their own English language entry requirements ABOVE the UKVI minimum B2. For example, a university may require IELTS 6.5 overall (which is B2+) for admission, even though UKVI only requires B2. Always check your university's specific requirements alongside the visa requirement. EEC's UK study abroad counselors can advise on this.

Score Needed

LanguageCert Academic SELT at B2 is a pass/fail assessment at the CEFR B2 level. You either achieve B2 or you do not — there are no band scores like IELTS. For the UK Student Route, you simply need to "pass" at B2. For Australian visas, the same test provides a numerical score where 64+ per component equals "Competent English."

Preparation Timeline

B2 (upper intermediate) is the most demanding LanguageCert level for UK visas. Plan your preparation accordingly:

← Swipe left to see more columns →

Recommended Preparation Time for LanguageCert Academic SELT (B2)
Current LevelPreparation TimeRecommended Approach
Strong B2 already2-3 weeksFormat familiarization + mock tests
B1+ (solid intermediate)4-6 weeksIntensive all-skills preparation + coaching
B1 (intermediate)6-8 weeksComprehensive coaching + daily practice
Below B18-12 weeksConsider Spoken English course first, then LanguageCert

For detailed preparation strategies, read LanguageCert preparation tips. If your English needs strengthening, start with EEC's Spoken English course to build fundamentals. Also see LanguageCert test centers in India for booking locations. Explore IELTS coaching at EEC or PTE coaching for Australia if considering alternative tests.

Warning

Do NOT underestimate B2. Many Indian students who comfortably passed B1 struggle at B2 because the academic English demands are significantly higher. Give yourself adequate preparation time — it is better to delay your test by 2 weeks than to fail and lose £190 plus weeks of processing time.
