What actually changes on a computer
Three of the four modules move to a screen. Speaking does not.
Writing is typed, against the clock
No handwriting, no word-counting by hand — the screen counts for you. Typing speed becomes a real variable, and it is the one most students never train.
Reading happens on screen
You highlight and take notes inside the test player rather than on the page. The passage and the questions share a split screen, so scrolling technique matters.
Listening is click-to-answer
Answers are typed or clicked as the audio plays, with no ten-minute transfer time at the end. What you enter during the recording is what gets marked.
Speaking is unchanged
Still face-to-face with a human examiner, still 11-14 minutes. The computer test changes three modules, not four.
Results in 1-3 days
Paper took 13 days. On computer you can sit the test and have your Test Report Form before the following week's application deadline.

Is IELTS computer based or paper based in India?
IELTS in India is now 100% computer-delivered. IDP announced on 16 July 2026 that paper-based IELTS would end here, and the final paper sittings were held in August 2026. The questions, difficulty and band descriptors are unchanged — only the format is different.
What is CD-IELTS?
CD-IELTS means Computer-Delivered IELTS. You read, listen and type your answers on a computer at an official test centre. Speaking stays face-to-face with a human examiner. Results arrive in 1-3 days instead of the 13 days paper used to take.
Is computer based IELTS easier than paper?
The difficulty is identical — same questions, same band descriptors. What changes is the skill set: typing speed for Writing, on-screen highlighting for Reading, and click-to-answer Listening. Students comfortable on a screen usually score the same or better.
How do I practise for computer based IELTS?
Practise on the interface itself, not on paper. Every EEC mock — 100+ of them — runs on a test player identical to the official IELTS on Computer, and our 26 centres have CD-IELTS labs so you can sit one on a real exam-style machine.
Can I still write IELTS on paper anywhere?
Not in India. Some countries are still phasing paper out through 2026, and a few markets offer a 'Writing on Paper' variant where the rest of the test is on screen. If you are testing in India, the computer format is your only option.
How fast are computer based IELTS results?
Between 1 and 3 days, against the 13 days paper-based results used to take. That speed is the main practical reason the switch matters: you can book, sit, and apply inside the same fortnight.
