| Category | Items |
|---|---|
| Must Bring | Valid unexpired passport (original), CELPIP confirmation email (printed or on phone) |
| Recommended | Light jacket (centres can be cold), glasses if needed |
| Banned | Mobile phone, smartwatch, notes, food, water bottle, jewellery, bag (stored in locker) |
What to Bring on CELPIP Exam Day
Packing for CELPIP test day is intentionally simple — but one missing item can derail your entire experience. The only mandatory item is your valid, unexpired passport (original). No photocopy, no Aadhaar card, no driving licence — only a passport is accepted as identification at Prometric centres across India. The name on your passport must match your CELPIP registration exactly, including spelling and order. If you recently changed your name, ensure your passport reflects the update before test day. Note that this same passport serves as ID for IELTS as well — if you're weighing both tests, see our CELPIP vs IELTS comparison before registering.
Second, carry your CELPIP confirmation email — either printed or accessible on your phone (you'll surrender the phone at check-in, so a printout is safer). While Prometric staff can look you up digitally, having the confirmation speeds up the process and eliminates any booking-verification stress. If you haven't registered yet, see our CELPIP fee & registration guide for step-by-step instructions.
Pro Tip
What NOT to Bring
Prometric enforces a strict zero-tolerance policy on personal items inside the testing room. You cannot bring your mobile phone, smartwatch or any wristwatch, notes or study materials, food or drinks (including water bottles), jewellery beyond a simple wedding band, bags, pouches, or wallets. All personal belongings must be stored in the secure locker provided at the centre before you enter the testing room. Prometric staff will ask you to empty your pockets during check-in.

Plan to arrive at the Prometric centre 30-45 minutes before your scheduled session time. If your session is at 9:00 AM, aim to be at the centre by 8:15 AM. Late arrivals are not permitted — if you miss the check-in window, you will be denied entry and your test fee is non-refundable. Allow extra time for traffic, parking, and finding the exact floor or suite within the building. If you're unsure about your centre location, review our CELPIP test centres in India guide for addresses and directions.
The Check-In Steps
At the centre, the process follows a fixed sequence: 1) Present your passport at the reception desk for ID verification — the proctor compares your photo and name against your registration. 2) A digital photograph is taken at the centre (this photo appears on your official score report). 3) You store all personal belongings in a secure locker — you keep only your locker key and passport. 4) You're escorted to your assigned workstation in the testing room. The entire check-in takes about 15-20 minutes, which is why arriving early is critical. If the process feels unfamiliar, book a free consultation with EEC — our counselors send you a personalised pre-test checklist.

Computer Setup & Interface
CELPIP is 100% computer-based — every section, including Speaking, is completed on-screen. When you sit down at your workstation, you'll find a desktop computer, a noise-cancelling headset with a built-in microphone (used for Listening and Speaking sections), and an erasable notepad (a laminated sheet with a marker, not scratch paper) for jotting down notes during the test.
The on-screen interface includes a clearly visible countdown timer for each section, a progress indicator showing your current question number, and navigation buttons. You can see exactly how much time remains at all times — no need for a personal wristwatch. Before the actual test begins, there is a short tutorial that walks you through the interface, so even first-time computer test takers will feel comfortable. If you want to familiarise yourself with the full test structure in advance, read our CELPIP complete guide for India.
Pro Tip
Break & Bathroom Policy
Unlike IELTS, which has a break between sections, CELPIP runs continuously for approximately 3 hours with no scheduled breaks between sections. You move directly from Listening to Reading to Writing to Speaking without any pause. This is one of the most important CELPIP exam day tips to internalise: there is no intermission, so plan accordingly.
If you absolutely need a bathroom break, you may raise your hand and request to leave — but the clock does not stop. Any time you spend away from your workstation is time lost from your current section. For this reason, use the bathroom before check-in and avoid drinking large amounts of water in the hour before the test. Most successful test takers complete the exam without leaving their seat. For more strategies on pacing yourself across sections, check our CELPIP preparation tips, or enquire now about EEC's mock tests that simulate the real no-break format.

Time Management During the Test
Effective time management is the difference between CLB 7 and CLB 9 on test day. Each CELPIP section has its own timing structure: Listening runs for approximately 47-55 minutes, Reading for 55-60 minutes, Writing for 53 minutes (27 + 26), and Speaking for about 15-20 minutes. The total test duration is roughly 3 hours.
The golden rule: never spend more than the allotted time per question. In Reading, if a question is taking more than 90 seconds, make your best guess, flag it mentally, and move on. In Writing, aim to finish your email within 22-23 minutes so you have 4-5 minutes for review. During Speaking, use your preparation time wisely — jot 3-4 key points on your erasable notepad so you don't freeze when the recording starts. For section-specific timing strategies, see our Speaking tips and Writing tips guides.

Handling Test Anxiety
It's completely normal to feel nervous before and during your CELPIP test — most Indian test takers do, especially first-time examinees. The key is not to eliminate anxiety entirely (a small amount of adrenaline actually helps performance) but to prevent it from spiralling into panic. Here are the anxiety-management techniques that EEC's trainers teach every batch.
Before the Test
Get 7-8 hours of sleep the night before — no late-night cramming. Eat a light, balanced breakfast (avoid heavy or greasy food). Arrive early so you're not rushing. If you're also preparing for PTE as a backup, schedule your tests at least two weeks apart to avoid burnout. Avoid discussing preparation levels with other test takers in the waiting area — other people's anxiety is contagious.
During the Test
If you feel overwhelmed during the exam, use the 4-7-8 breathing technique: inhale through your nose for 4 seconds, hold for 7 seconds, exhale through your mouth for 8 seconds. This activates your parasympathetic nervous system and calms you within 30 seconds. Focus on one question at a time — don't think about the next section while you're in the current one. If you encounter a difficult question, skip it mentally (answer your best guess) and move forward. Coming back to a stressful question with fresh eyes often makes the answer obvious.
Good News
EEC's mock tests replicate every aspect of test day — same timing, same interface, same pressure. Students who complete all mock tests report feeling significantly calmer on the real exam.
Start with a Free DemoAfter the Test: Results & Next Steps
Once you complete the Speaking section, your CELPIP test ends automatically. You'll see a confirmation screen — no score is displayed immediately. Collect your belongings from the locker, return the erasable notepad to the proctor, and you're free to leave. There is nothing else required at the centre.
CELPIP results are released within 3-4 business days on your celpip.ca account. You'll receive an email notification when scores are ready. The PDF score report available in your account is the official document — you can download it and send it directly to IRCC for your Express Entry application. Whether you need CELPIP for Express Entry, a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), or the new PGWP language requirement (CLB 7 for degree programs, CLB 5 for diplomas, since November 2024), the same score report covers all pathways. Unlike IELTS, there is no separate TRF mailing process. For a detailed understanding of how your CELPIP score translates to CLB and CRS points, read our CELPIP score for Canada PR guide.
If your score meets your target CLB, the next step is submitting your Express Entry profile or updating an existing one. If the score falls short, don't panic — you can retake CELPIP as soon as the next available test date with no mandatory waiting period. Many EEC students who narrowly miss their target on the first attempt achieve it on the second with focused coaching on their weak areas. EEC also offers complementary services including Canada study-abroad counselling, visa processing support, education loan assistance, and French A1-A2 training for additional CRS points.
