The cost of studying in Japan for Indian students in 2026 is among the lowest for any top-30 globally study destination. Public Japanese universities (University of Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Tohoku, Tokyo Tech) charge ¥535,800/year (around ₹3 lakh) — a fixed national rate. Living costs ¥80,000–130,000/month depending on city. Total annual cost at a public Japanese university: ₹11–15 lakh. Private universities (Waseda, Keio) cost ₹18–25 lakh/year. With MEXT Scholarship: total cost drops to ₹0.
Japan Cost Snapshot 2026
Japanese public tuition is uniformly priced at ¥535,800/year for master's degrees — a deliberate national policy under the Ministry of Education to maintain accessibility. First-year additional costs: ¥282,000 admission fee + ¥30,000 examination fee (one-time, total first year ¥847,800 ≈ ₹4.7 lakh). Year 2 onwards: ¥535,800/year only. The Japanese yen has weakened against the rupee since 2022, making Japan even cheaper for Indian families — ¥1 currently equals approximately ₹0.56. Total annual cost equation: tuition + living + National Health Insurance = ₹11–15 lakh per year at a public university.

National Health Insurance
Japanese National Health Insurance (NHI / Kokumin Kenkō Hoken) is mandatory for international students staying 3+ months. Cost: approximately ¥1,500–3,000/month (₹850–1,700) depending on income — extraordinarily cheap compared to Europe and the USA. NHI covers 70% of medical expenses; you pay 30%. Typical doctor visit ¥3,000 (you pay ¥900). Enrolment at the ward office within 14 days of arrival is mandatory. Some universities offer additional dedicated student health insurance covering the 30% co-payment for an additional ¥3,000–5,000/year. Annual NHI cost: ¥18,000–36,000 (₹10,000–20,000) — negligible compared to Switzerland (₹2.7–4 lakh) or USA ($3,000–5,000).
Proof of Funds for Visa

Japan requires non-Japanese students to show ¥2,000,000+ per year (around ₹11 lakh) as proof of financial support. Acceptable proofs: bank statements held three or more months in your or sponsor's name, fixed deposits, education loan sanction letter from a recognised Indian bank, MEXT scholarship award letter (full exemption from proof-of-funds), JASSO scholarship letter. Sponsor declarations from parents are widely accepted in Japan — much more flexible than European countries. Funds can remain in INR. Some universities additionally require funds deposited into a Japanese bank account before residence card issuance. Full walkthrough in our Japan student visa 2026 guide.
