Why Japan in 2026
Japan hosts the RU11 — eleven research universities (Tohoku, Tsukuba, Tokyo Tech, University of Tokyo, Nagoya, Kyoto, Osaka, Kyushu, Hokkaido, Hiroshima, Waseda + Keio extension) — that anchor the country's ¥17.6 trillion R&D ecosystem (third largest globally after the USA and China). Strong career placement at Sony, Toyota, Honda, Hitachi, NTT, Toshiba, Mitsubishi, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking, Rakuten, LINE and Mercari. Cost-effective relative to peers: total annual cost at a public Japanese university ₹11–15 lakh — among the cheapest top-30 study destinations globally. MEXT scholarship makes Japan effectively free for around 30 Indian recipients annually.
English-Taught G30 Programmes
Over 800 Japanese programmes are taught entirely in English, primarily at master's level through dedicated G30 (Global 30) tracks at top universities. University of Tokyo offers extensive English MS in the Graduate School of Engineering and Graduate School of Frontier Sciences. Kyoto University runs English MS at the Graduate School of Energy Science. Tokyo Tech offers Globally Integrated Engineering programmes. Osaka University offers Frontier Bioscience MS. Waseda and Keio (private) run broad English tracks in politics, economics, science and engineering. Tohoku and Nagoya have strong English engineering catalogues. JLPT N4 is helpful for daily life but not required for G30 admission.

Post-Study Job Hunting Visa
After graduation, master's and PhD students can apply for the "Designated Activities (Job Hunting)" visa — a 1-year residence permit (extendable once for another year, total 2 years maximum) to seek skilled employment in Japan. Full work rights during this period. Once a job in an eligible occupation matching the master's field is secured, the permit converts to a work visa: Specialist in Humanities/International Services (business / IT) or Engineer/Technical Specialist (engineering). After 10 years of legal residence (5 years in select cases such as Highly Skilled Professional points 70+), graduates can apply for permanent residency. Naturalisation possible after 5–10 years.
