Warning
Japan Student Visa Overview
The Japan student visa (Ryūgaku Visa) is the long-stay visa route for Indian students enrolled in programmes longer than 90 days at Japanese universities or designated language schools. It is valid for the duration of your programme (typically 1–4 years) and renewable from within Japan via your university and the local immigration bureau. The Japan Embassy New Delhi handles applicants from northern India and the Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Bengaluru consulates handle their respective regions. University of Tokyo, Kyoto, Tokyo Tech, Osaka, Tohoku, Nagoya, Waseda and Keio all require this visa for Indian admits.
Certificate of Eligibility (COE)
The Certificate of Eligibility (在留資格認定証明書 Zairyū Shikaku Nintei Shōmeisho, or COE) is a pre-approval document issued by the Japanese Ministry of Justice that confirms your eligibility for student status in Japan. The Japanese university applies for the COE on your behalf after accepting your master's or PhD admission. COE processing at the university plus ministry takes 4–8 weeks. The COE is sent to you by your Japanese university (physical document by courier or PDF), and you then submit it to the Japan Embassy with your visa application. The COE is the single most critical document in the Japan student visa process. Per MOFA, applications without a COE are technically possible but require extensive verification documents and can take several months — in practice, every Japanese university files the COE on the student's behalf and the embassy treats it as effectively mandatory.

Proof of Funds ¥2,000,000

Japan requires non-Japanese students to show ¥2,000,000+ per year (around ₹11 lakh) as proof of financial support. Acceptable proofs: bank statements held three or more months in your or sponsor's name, fixed deposits, education loan sanction letter from a recognised Indian bank (HDFC Credila, Avanse, SBI Scholar, ICICI), MEXT scholarship award letter (exempts you from proof-of-funds entirely), JASSO scholarship award letter. Sponsor declarations (parent / family) are widely accepted in Japan — much more flexible than European countries. Funds can be in INR equivalent. Visa Application Timeline
Total Japan student visa timeline: 3 months from university acceptance to visa stamp in passport. Breakdown: university application + acceptance (1–3 months pre-COE), COE application by university to Japan Ministry of Justice (4–8 weeks), embassy / consulate visa application after receiving COE (5–10 working days at Japan Embassy New Delhi or Mumbai / Chennai / Kolkata / Bengaluru consulates). Start at least 4 months before programme start. Both April and October intakes are available at most Japanese universities — the October intake has a shorter pre-departure timeline because COE applications can run from April. Work Permission on Arrival
To work part-time on a Japan student visa, you must first obtain the "Permission to Engage in Activity Other Than That Permitted by the Status of Residence Previously Granted" (Shikakugai Katsudō Kyokasho). Apply at Narita / Haneda / Kansai / Fukuoka airport on arrival (free of charge) or at the local Immigration Bureau within 1–2 weeks of arrival. Once granted, you can work up to 28 hours/week during semester and full-time during holidays. At Japan minimum wage ¥1,226/hour in Tokyo (₹690/hour; effective 3 Oct 2025 per MHLW), realistic monthly earnings ¥80,000–130,000 (₹45,000–73,000). Common student jobs: konbini, English tutoring, university research assistant, restaurant.
Residence Card (Zairyū Card)

After arrival in Japan, you receive the Residence Card (在留カード Zairyū Card) immediately at the airport — typically Narita, Haneda, Kansai or Fukuoka international terminals. Carry the card at all times (legally required). Within 14 days of arrival, register your address at the local ward office (city hall) — this links the card to your address. The card is your primary ID in Japan, used for bank account opening, mobile phone activation, university registration, National Health Insurance enrolment, and re-entry to Japan after travel. Renew annually with your university recommendation through the local immigration bureau.
Pro Tip
Common Rejection Reasons
Top Japan visa rejection causes for Indian applicants in 2026: (1) insufficient proof of funds below ¥2,000,000/year; (2) suspicious large deposits in the three-month bank statement window; (3) a weak Statement of Purpose — Japanese consulates value detailed personal narrative plus clear research goals; (4) programme choice misaligned with bachelor's field without a clear pivot rationale; (5) inadequate Japanese proficiency for a Japanese-medium programme (JLPT N3+ minimum); (6) previous visa refusal from any country not declared; (7) incomplete COE supporting documents at the university level (the COE step is where most files actually fail). EEC's Japan visa approval rate is 94% across 28+ submissions since 2018.
