Which Canadian universities accept the DET score for Canada in 2026? The Duolingo English Test is gaining significant acceptance among Canadian universities and colleges, with 500+ institutions now recognizing DET for admissions. However, there is a critical distinction: while Canadian universities accept DET for admission, IRCC does NOT accept DET for immigration (PR, PGWP). This guide covers which Canadian institutions accept DET, minimum scores, and what Indian students need to know. EEC offers both DET coaching and FREE Canada study abroad counseling at ₹4,990.
The Duolingo English Test costs just ₹6,200, is taken from home on your computer anytime, delivers results in 48 hours, and allows unlimited free score sends to universities worldwide.
DET for Canada: Growing Acceptance
Canada's DET acceptance has grown significantly since 2020. Many of Canada's top universities — including the University of Toronto, UBC, and McGill — now accept DET for admissions. However, acceptance varies by program, and some institutions accept DET only for certain faculties or degree levels. Always verify with the specific program you are applying to.

DET and Canadian Immigration: Critical Warning
Warning
DET is accepted for university admission only — not for immigration. If your plan is: study in Canada → graduate → PGWP → PR, you will eventually need IELTS/CELPIP/PTE Core anyway. In this case, taking IELTS upfront may be more efficient. However, if you just need quick admission and plan to take IELTS later for immigration, DET is a valid fast-track option.

DET for Canada Study Permit
DET scores can be used to demonstrate English proficiency for your Canada study permit application, as long as your designated learning institution (DLI) accepts DET for admission. The study permit process itself does not specify which English test to use — it is the university's acceptance letter that matters. However, for PGWP after graduation, you will need IRCC-approved tests.
