This complete guide covers everything you need to know about the Duolingo English Test in 2026.
What Is the Duolingo English Test (DET)?
The Duolingo English Test (DET) is a computer-adaptive, AI-proctored English proficiency test developed by Duolingo (NASDAQ: DUOL), the world's most popular language learning platform. Unlike IELTS or TOEFL, DET is taken entirely online from your home computer — no test center visit required. The test is available 24/7, on-demand, and results arrive in just 48 hours — the fastest of any major English proficiency test.
DET's key advantage is its accessibility: at ₹6,200, it costs a fraction of what other tests charge. Plus, you can send your scores to unlimited universities for free — no additional fees per score report. For Indian students targeting universities in the USA, Canada, UK, and beyond, DET offers a fast, affordable, and convenient pathway to proving English proficiency.
Pro Tip
DET Test Format 2026: Adaptive Test + Video Interview + Writing Sample
The Duolingo English Test consists of three parts, completed in approximately 60 minutes total. The test is computer-adaptive, meaning questions get harder or easier based on your performance — similar to the GRE or GMAT adaptive format.

| Section | Duration | Content | Scored? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adaptive Test | ~45 min | Read and Complete, Read and Select, Listen and Type, Read Aloud, Write About the Photo, Speak About the Photo, Read Then Write, Listen Then Speak, Interactive Reading, Interactive Listening | Yes (10-160) |
| Video Interview | ~5 min | 2 open-ended video responses to prompts | No (sent to universities) |
| Writing Sample | ~5 min | 1 written response to a prompt | No (sent to universities) |
| Total | ~60 min | Adaptive (scored) + Interview/Writing (unscored, reviewed by admissions) | — |
The adaptive section is the scored portion. It tests all four language skills — reading, writing, listening, and speaking — through innovative question types. The video interview and writing sample are NOT scored but are sent directly to universities for admissions officers to review, giving them a fuller picture of your communication abilities beyond the score number.

DET Scoring System: 10-160 Scale & Four Sub-Scores Explained
