GMAT vs GRE 2026 is the single biggest test-strategy decision for Indian MBA and MS aspirants. The short answer: choose GMAT if you are 100% MBA only, choose GRE if you are deciding between MBA and MS or applying to a mix. Top global business schools accept both with no preference; almost all US MS programmes require GRE only. Cost differs too — GMAT in India is $324.50 (~₹27,100) test centre / $354 (~₹29,570) online ($275/$300 base + 18% GST), GRE is ₹23,452 flat (Subject Test ₹17,818). EEC coaches both formats at 26 Gujarat centres and online.
GMAT vs GRE: Which to Take 2026
Decision matrix: GMAT only if you have decided on MBA exclusively and are targeting Harvard, Stanford, Wharton, ISB or IIM-A PGPX. GRE if you want MBA + MS option open, or applying to non-business graduate programmes alongside MBA. Either if you are early in the decision cycle — top MBA programmes accept both with no preference. EEC recommends a 90-minute diagnostic test to identify your stronger format before committing 200–300 hours of preparation.

| GMAT Focus Edition | Classic GMAT (Old) | GRE Total | Percentile (approx) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 705+ | 740+ | 328+ | 95th+ |
| 685 | 720 | 326 | 90th |
| 645 | 700 | 320–322 | 80–85th |

| 565 | 620 | 306 | 50th |
| 525 | 580 | 300 | 35th |
Format Differences
GMAT Focus Edition: 2hr 15min, 3 sections (Quant 21 questions, Verbal 23 questions, Data Insights 20 questions), score 205–805. GRE General Test: 1hr 58min, 3 sections (Quant 27 questions, Verbal 27 questions, AWA writing 1 essay), score 260–340 plus writing 0–6. GMAT Quant is harder algebra and logic; GRE Quant is easier math with more geometry. GMAT Verbal is logic-heavy (Critical Reasoning + Reading Comprehension); GRE Verbal has vocabulary, sentence equivalence and text completion.
Which is Easier for Indian Students
For Indian engineering and commerce graduates, GRE Quant feels easier (returning to basic geometry and arithmetic) but GRE Verbal is harder due to dense English vocabulary. GMAT Quant is more challenging conceptually but vocabulary-light. Data Insights on GMAT Focus tests business analytics skills (charts, sufficiency) which is new for many. IIT and NIT engineers often score higher on GRE Quant but struggle with GRE Verbal vocab; CA and CFA candidates often prefer GMAT Quant style.
MBA School Acceptance — Both Tests
As of 2026, 90%+ of top global business schools accept both tests with no preference: Harvard, Stanford, Wharton, Booth, Kellogg, MIT Sloan, Columbia, Tuck, Yale SOM, INSEAD, HEC Paris, LBS, IESE, IE, ESADE, NYU Stern, Anderson, Ross, Haas, McCombs, ISB Hyderabad. A handful of programmes still slightly favour GMAT for full-time MBA — historically Stanford and HBS — though the gap has narrowed.
Test Cost — GMAT vs GRE

GRE is cheaper. GRE General Test costs ₹23,452 (flat localized Indian pricing, taxes included) in India for 2026; GRE Subject Test ₹17,818. GMAT Focus Edition costs $324.50 (~₹27,100) at a test centre and $354 (~₹29,570) online — both equal the global base ($275/$300) plus 18% GST processed at checkout. GRE additional score reports cost $35 each (free for first 4 sent on test day). GMAT additional score reports cost $35 each (5 free at test). Both tests have rescheduling and cancellation fees. Over a full preparation cycle (test + retake + 2 official prep books + scores), GMAT costs around ₹40,000 and GRE around ₹32,000.
Retake and Attempt Limits
GMAT Focus Edition: up to 5 times in any 12-month rolling period, up to 8 times in your lifetime, minimum 16 days between attempts. GRE General Test: up to 5 times in any 12-month rolling period (no lifetime cap), minimum 21 days between attempts. Both tests use ScoreSelect (GRE) or score cancellation (GMAT) so you can choose which scores to send to schools.
Pro Tip
MS in USA vs MBA — Test Strategy
For MS in USA programmes, GRE is overwhelmingly preferred — engineering, computer science, data science, applied mathematics, physics, biology and most STEM master's programmes either require GRE or strongly recommend it. Some top MS programmes (CMU, MIT, Stanford, UC Berkeley) made GRE optional in 2021–2023 but still favour strong scores in competitive specialisations. GMAT is rarely accepted for MS programmes outside business analytics and management.
GMAT vs GRE for ISB Hyderabad
ISB Hyderabad PGP (1-year MBA) accepts both GMAT Focus Edition and GRE for the 2026–27 cycle. Historical class profile: average GMAT 715 (classic) / GMAT Focus 685, average GRE 327. ISB applicants with strong undergraduate academics and 2–5 years of work experience can submit either. GMAT has slightly higher submission rate (around 75%) but GRE is fully accepted with no penalty.
