He is the senior reviewer on EEC's published GRE / GMAT / D-SAT content and the technical authority on the 2024 GMAT Focus Edition transition and the College Board's Digital SAT adaptive-section testing format. GMAT vs CAT 2026 is the most important MBA-test decision for Indian aspirants. Choose CAT for full-time 2-year MBA at top IIMs (IIM-A, IIM-B, IIM-C, IIM-L, IIM-K, IIM-I), FMS Delhi, SP Jain Mumbai and XLRI. Choose GMAT for global MBA (Harvard, Stanford, Wharton, INSEAD, HEC), Indian 1-year MBA / EMBA (ISB, IIM-A PGPX, IIM-B EPGP), or hedging both. Many strong candidates take both — CAT for IIM and GMAT for ISB / IIM-A PGPX.
GMAT vs CAT — Quick Verdict
Choose CAT only: targeting full-time 2-year MBA at top IIMs and Indian B-schools accepting only CAT. Choose GMAT only: targeting global MBA + 1-year MBA at ISB / IIM-A PGPX / IIM-B EPGP / XLRI XAHR (which accept GMAT but not all accept CAT). Choose both: maximum optionality — strong CAT score opens IIM 2-year MBA, strong GMAT opens ISB + global MBA. The dual strategy works for high-effort candidates with 9+ months prep window.

Which is Harder for Indians
CAT is generally harder for English-medium engineering graduates because: (1) CAT has time pressure of ~1.8 min/question vs GMAT 2.1 min, (2) CAT VARC includes notoriously dense Reading Comprehension passages from philosophy / psychology / economics, (3) CAT QA covers Geometry which GMAT Focus dropped. GMAT is harder for non-English-medium aspirants because: (1) GMAT Verbal expects native-level English nuance, (2) GMAT Data Insights tests new business analytics skills, (3) GMAT is computer-adaptive.
Indian MBA Programmes Accepting GMAT

GMAT-accepting Indian MBA programmes (2026): ISB Hyderabad PGP, ISB Mohali PGP, IIM-A PGPX (1-year EMBA), IIM-B EPGP (1-year EMBA), IIM-C MBAEx (1-year), IIM-L IPMX (1-year), XLRI XAHR, SP Jain GMP, Great Lakes PGPM, IIFT MBA-IB (also accepts CAT), MICA PGDM-C, Jindal Global Business School (JGBS), TAPMI, IMI Delhi, NMIMS PGDM. Full-time 2-year MBA at IIM-A / B / C / L / K / I + FMS Delhi + XLRI BM still require CAT.
Test Fee — GMAT vs CAT
GMAT Focus Edition fee (India): $324.50 test centre (~₹27,100) / $354 online (~₹29,570) — both equal global base ($275/$300) plus 18% GST processed at checkout. Additional charges add ₹3,000–₹10,000 for reschedules and score reports. CAT 2026 fee: ₹2,400 for general category, ₹1,200 for SC/ST/PwD. CAT is roughly 12× cheaper than GMAT. Annual prep books + 1 retake budget for GMAT: ₹40,000. For CAT: ₹5,000–₹8,000. CAT cost advantage is significant but GMAT's global versatility justifies the higher fee for many.
Attempts Allowed
GMAT Focus Edition: up to 5 times per 12-month rolling period, up to 8 times in your lifetime, minimum 16 days between attempts. CAT: once per year (held in November–December annually) — no retake within the same year. Many candidates take CAT three consecutive years to keep improving. The GMAT's lifetime 8-attempt limit is rarely reached; most aspirants take 1–3 attempts total.
GMAT to CAT Percentile Rough Conversion
There is no official conversion since the tests assess different competencies, but ISB Hyderabad data offers rough mapping: GMAT Focus 685 ≈ CAT 95th–97th percentile, GMAT Focus 645 ≈ CAT 90th–93rd, GMAT Focus 605 ≈ CAT 80th–85th. The mapping is approximate because CAT scoring is percentile-based against the year's cohort while GMAT is a fixed scale. Both 95+ percentile on CAT and 685+ on GMAT Focus represent the top-tier MBA admission band.
When are GMAT and CAT Held

GMAT Focus Edition: year-round at Pearson Professional Centres in 13+ Indian cities (Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Kochi, Chandigarh). You can take it any time with 16-day gap between attempts. CAT 2026: single annual administration on a Sunday in late November. Registration July–September, admit card November, results January, IIM admission cycle February–April for July intake.
Dual-Test Strategy — Both Tests
Many top Indian aspirants take both: CAT for full-time IIM-A / B / C 2-year MBA + GMAT for ISB / IIM-A PGPX / global MBA backup. The 2026 strategy: take GMAT Focus in July–September for ISB Round 1 (October deadline), then take CAT in November. Strong scores in both open every top MBA door. Risk: dual-prep dilutes focus, so allocate 60% time to your primary test (CAT for full-time IIM) and 40% to the secondary (GMAT).
