The Occupational English Test (OET)is an English language test designed specifically for 12 healthcare professions — nursing, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, dietetics, optometry, podiatry, radiography, speech pathology and veterinary science. The test fee in India for 2026 is A$587 (around ₹32,000), and scores are accepted by healthcare regulators in the UK (NMC, GMC, GPhC), Australia (AHPRA), Ireland (NMBI), New Zealand, Canada, Singapore and UAE. This guide covers format, scoring, country acceptance and EEC's OET online coaching across 12 professions.
What is OET 2026
OET tests healthcare-specific English communication. Unlike IELTS Academic which uses general topics (climate, history, art), OET content is rooted in your daily clinical work — you read patient notes, write referral letters, take consultation roleplays. The test is owned by Cambridge Boxhill Language Assessment (CBLA), a joint venture of Cambridge English and Box Hill Institute. Recognised by 16 regulators globally in 2026.

OET Format and Duration
OET runs 3 hours 15 minutes across 4 skills. Listening (45 min, 3 parts, 42 questions — consultation, presentation, healthcare lectures). Reading (60 min, 3 parts, 42 questions — Part A short healthcare texts, Parts B and C longer texts). Writing (45 min, 1 task — write a referral / discharge / transfer / advice letter based on case notes, profession-specific). Speaking (20 min, 2 role-plays simulating patient or professional dialogues, profession-specific). All four skills use healthcare content.
OET Scoring — A to E Grades

Each of the 4 skills is scored on a numerical 0–500 scale and converted to a letter grade — A (450–500), B (350–440), C+ (300–340), C (200–290), D (100–190), E (0–90). Most healthcare regulators require Grade B in all 4 skills (350+). The UK NMC accepts B in Reading, Listening, Speaking and C+ in Writing (300+). Australia AHPRA requires B in all four. The 2026 scoring is identical to 2024–25.
Countries and Regulators Accepting OET
OET is accepted by: UK (NMC for nurses and midwives, GMC for doctors, GPhC for pharmacists, GDC for dentists), Australia (AHPRA — all 15 regulated professions), Ireland (NMBI, Medical Council of Ireland, Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland), New Zealand (Nursing Council, Medical Council, Pharmacy Council), Canada (most provincial regulators), Singapore, UAE (DHA Dubai, HAAD Abu Dhabi, MOH Federal), and Malta. The full list with required scores is on occupationalenglishtest.org.
Score Requirements — NMC, AHPRA, NMBI

UK NMC (nurses): Grade B (350+) in Reading, Listening, Speaking and Grade C+ (300+) in Writing. The Writing score can be combined across two test sittings within 12 months. Australia AHPRA (all professions): Grade B in all four skills. Ireland NMBI: Grade B in all four. New Zealand Nursing Council: Grade B in all four (Writing may be combined). Canada provincial regulators: typically Grade B in all four. UAE DHA / HAAD: Grade B in all four for nurses, Grade C+ for some technical roles.
OET vs IELTS for Healthcare
For Indian healthcare professionals, OET is generally easier because all content is healthcare-specific — you read patient notes, write referral letters, take consultation roleplays. Vocabulary, scenarios and writing tasks reflect what you already do daily at work. IELTS Academic uses general academic topics and an unfamiliar essay format. EEC NMC-bound nurse cohorts pass OET at 78% first attempt versus IELTS Academic Band 7 at 62%, though individual results vary.
OET Preparation Strategy
Most working healthcare professionals need 8–12 weeks of structured preparation, typically 80–120 hours. EEC's OET schedule: 30-hour foundation (test introduction, format, healthcare vocabulary), 50-hour skill practice (all 4 sections with feedback), 20-hour mock-test cycle (4 full-length papers under timed conditions). Students with strong English foundation can complete in 6–8 weeks; first-time test-takers need 10–14 weeks.
