UK Graduate Route Changes 2027: 18-Month Reduction Explained — Impact on Indian Students
Astha Dhrangu
UK Counselor, EEC
Astha Dhrangu leads UK admissions at EEC. She handles the full Student Route (Tier 4) pipeline: CAS coordination with UK sponsor licence holders, Pre-CAS credibility interview prep (15–30 minute video assessments before CAS issuance), IHS £776/year payment guidance, maintenance-funds 28-day-rule documentation (£13,761 London / £10,539 outside (Nov 2025 rates) London for 2026), TB-test scheduling, and IELTS UKVI / PTE UKVI / LanguageCert SELT routing. Post-issuance she covers Graduate Route (2-year work permit) and Skilled Worker transition (£41,700 threshold from July 2025). Astha works with Mohita Gupta on credibility-interview Red Team analysis and with CA Madhav Gupta on financial-documentation reviews.

Effective 1 January 2027, the UK Graduate Route post-study visais reduced from 2 years to 18 months for bachelor and master's graduates. PhD graduates retain the 3-year window. The change applies to students who complete their course on or after 1 January 2027. Students who finish before that date keep the existing 2-year route. The 18-month window still permits unrestricted work in any sector at any salary.

UK Graduate Route 2027 — 18 Months
Effective 1 January 2027, the UK Graduate Route post-study visa duration is reduced from 2 years to 18 months for bachelor and master's graduates. PhD graduates retain the 3-year post-study window. The change applies to students who complete their course on or after 1 January 2027 — students who finish before that date keep the existing 2-year route. The 18-month window still permits unrestricted work in any sector at any salary.

Why the Reduction?
The UK Home Office reduced the Graduate Route as part of the 2024–2025 immigration reform aiming to lower net migration to under 240,000/year. The Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) recommended retention of the route but with reduced duration. The 18-month window is still longer than equivalent post-study visas in many other countries — Canada PGWP up to 3 years (longer but with NOC restrictions), Australia 485 Visa 2–4 years (with regional bonuses), Germany 18-month Job Seeker (equivalent).

Impact on Indian Students
Indian students completing courses after 1 January 2027 will need to convert from Graduate Route to a Skilled Worker visa within 18 months (vs the current 24) to remain in the UK. This requires finding a sponsoring employer who can offer a job at the Skilled Worker general salary threshold (£41,700/year gross, effective 22 July 2025), or £33,400/year for new entrants and Immigration Salary List roles. The reduced window puts pressure on the first 12 months — most Indian Graduate Route holders need to start job-hunting in their final semester.
Warning

PhD Exception — 3 Years Retained
PhD graduates retain the full 3-year post-study window even after the January 2027 changes. This is a deliberate policy choice to retain doctoral talent in UK research, engineering, AI and life sciences. Indian PhD graduates from UK universities (Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, UCL, Edinburgh) have the most generous post-study route in the UK system. EEC supports both master's and PhD applicants.
Skilled Worker Visa Conversion
The UK Skilled Worker visa replaces Tier 2 since 2020. Requirements (2026): job offer from licensed UK sponsor, salary at least £41,700/year gross general threshold (effective 22 July 2025) or £33,400/year for new entrants and Immigration Salary List occupations, English IELTS 4.0+ or equivalent, occupation on the eligible Skilled Occupations list at RQF Level 6 or above. Duration: 5 years initially, extendable. Leads to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) after 5 years on the Skilled Worker route.
Should I Rush Before January 2027?
Only if you can comfortably accelerate without compromising academic outcomes. Course duration on the UK Graduate Route is determined by your course completion date, NOT by your visa application date. A student starting a 1-year master's in September 2026 will complete in September 2027 — they fall under the new 18-month route. Students who complete by December 31, 2026 keep the 2-year route. Some students choose 1-year courses over 2-year deliberately to land before the change.
Pro Tip
Health and Care Worker Visa Alternative
Indian nurses and healthcare professionals registering with the UK NMC can bypass the Graduate Route entirely by applying directly for the Health and Care Worker visa — a Tier-2 fast-track with reduced fees vs the standard Skilled Worker fee (£819 up to 3 years, from outside the UK), IHS exemption, and family dependant visa with work rights. Sponsored by NHS Trusts. Note: the overseas Care Worker recruitment route closed to new applicants on 22 July 2025; this fast-track now mainly applies to NHS-sponsored nurses/doctors and to in-country switchers under transitional rules.
UK vs Canada vs Australia Post-Study
Post-study work window comparison after January 2027: UK 18 months (master), 3 years (PhD); Canada PGWP up to 3 years for 16+ month master's graduates with NOC restrictions; Australia 485 Visa 2 years standard + 1–2 years regional bonus; Germany 18-month Job Seeker Visa (unlimited work); Finland 2 years; Netherlands 1 year (Zoekjaar). Canada PGWP becomes the longest standard window after UK changes. Australia matches UK on 18 months for non-regional graduates.
EEC Edge — UK Post-Study Support
EEC offers end-to-end UK post-study support: Graduate Route application coordination (within 6 months of course completion), Skilled Worker visa documentation, UK alumni network job leads at NHS Trusts and licensed sponsors, salary negotiation guidance for the £41,700 threshold, dependant visa applications for spouse and children. EEC has supported 800+ Indian UK graduates with Skilled Worker conversions since 2020.
