Germany is one of the most attractive study destinations for Indian students due to its low or zero tuition fees at public universities, world-class engineering and technology programs, and an 18-month post-study work visa. While most German-taught programs require German proficiency (TestDaF or DSH), over 1,800 English-taught programs accept IELTS as proof of English proficiency. This guide covers when you need IELTS for Germany, what scores are required, how IELTS compares to TestDaF, and specific requirements at top German universities. All data is verified against daad.de and individual university websites as of February 2026.

IELTS for Germany — When Do You Need It?
Unlike countries like Canada, the UK, or Australia, Germany does not have a centralized national IELTS requirement for student visas or immigration. Instead, individual universities set their own language requirements based on the language of instruction. If you are applying to a German-taught program (Germanistik, Medizin, Jura, etc.), you need German proficiency proof (TestDaF TDN 4, DSH-2, or Goethe-Zertifikat C1) and IELTS is not required. If you are applying to an English-taught program(which includes most master's programs in engineering, computer science, data science, business, and economics), you need IELTS Academic or equivalent English proof.
A significant number of German programs, particularly at the master's level, are taught entirely in English. According to DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service), there are over 1,800 English-taught programs across German universities. Many of these programs are at public universities where tuition is free or minimal (typically €0–300 per semester, though Baden-Württemberg charges €1,500/semester for non-EU students). Even for English-taught programs, some universities recommend or require basic German A1 or A2 proficiency for daily life, and many visa officers appreciate seeing some German knowledge during the visa interview.

German University IELTS Requirements
Most German universities that offer English-taught programs require IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall, with some competitive programs requiring 7.0. Unlike UK or Australian universities that often specify minimum per-section scores, many German universities focus primarily on the overall band. However, technical universities (TU9 group) and highly ranked programs may require 6.5 with no section below 6.0. Below are typical requirements across different university types:

| University Type | Typical IELTS Requirement | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| TU9 (Top Technical) | 6.0–6.5 overall | TU Munich, RWTH Aachen, TU Berlin, Karlsruhe KIT |
| U15 (Research-Intensive) | 6.5 overall | Heidelberg, LMU Munich, Humboldt Berlin, Freie Berlin |
| Applied Sciences (HAW) | 5.5–6.0 overall | HAW Hamburg, Frankfurt UAS, Munich UAS |
| Business Schools | 6.5–7.0 overall | WHU, ESMT Berlin, Frankfurt School, HHL Leipzig |
| Engineering (Master’s) | 6.0–6.5 overall | Most technical universities |
| Data Science / CS | 6.0–6.5 overall | Increasingly popular programs |
| MBA Programs | 6.5–7.0 overall | Private business schools primarily |
Pro Tip

English-Taught Programmes — IELTS Scores
English-taught master's programs are the primary pathway for Indian students going to Germany, and the range of available programs has expanded significantly. Popular fields include Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, Electrical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Renewable Energy, Business Analytics, and Economics. The IELTS requirement for these programs is typically 6.0–6.5 overall. Some programs offer conditional admission at 5.5 if you complete a pre-sessional English course.
For undergraduate (bachelor's) programs, English-taught options are fewer but growing. Bachelor's programs in International Business, Applied Computer Science, and Engineering at some universities accept IELTS 6.0. However, many bachelor's programs in Germany are taught in German, requiring TestDaF TDN 4 or DSH-2. If you are an undergraduate student interested in Germany, consider taking German A1/A2 at EEC alongside IELTS to open up more program options.

Germany Student Visa — Language Requirements
The German student visa (National Visa Type D) does not have a separate IELTS requirement from the German embassy. Instead, you must provide proof of admission to a recognized German university, and the university's admission letter serves as evidence of your language proficiency. However, during the visa interview at the German consulate, the visa officer may assess your English and/or German ability informally. Having a clear IELTS score report and, ideally, some German proficiency (even A1) strengthens your visa application by demonstrating preparedness.
One important consideration for Germany-bound students: after completing your degree, you receive an 18-month Residence Permit for Job-Seeking, allowing you to stay in Germany and find work. If you find a job matching your qualification, you can transition to a Blue Card (for highly skilled workers). The Blue Card pathway does not require IELTS but does require German language skills for long-term integration and eventual permanent residence (Niederlassungserlaubnis). This is another reason EEC recommends combining IELTS preparation with German language training.
Warning
IELTS vs TestDaF — Which Do You Need?
The answer depends entirely on the language of instruction. IELTS Academic is required for English-taught programs. TestDaF (Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache)is required for German-taught programs. They are not interchangeable — an IELTS score cannot replace TestDaF for a German-taught program, and a TestDaF score cannot replace IELTS for an English-taught program. If you are applying to a program that has both English and German components (common in some bachelor's programs), you may need both.
