IELTS for UKVI is the UK Home Office approved version of the IELTS test, mandatory for most visa and immigration applications to the United Kingdom in 2026. If you are an Indian student, skilled professional, or family visa applicant planning to move to the UK, understanding IELTS for UKVI is the critical first step to a successful application. The test content is identical to regular IELTS, but it must be taken at a Secure English Language Test (SELT) approved centre under enhanced security conditions, and your Test Report Form (TRF) carries a special "IELTS for UKVI" marking that UK Visas & Immigration recognises. In this comprehensive 2026 guide, EEC — with 27+ years of experience coaching over 50,000 students across Gujarat — explains every detail: what UKVI is, how it differs from regular IELTS, which UK visas require it, approved test centres in India, fees, registration steps, and how EEC's specialist UKVI coaching at ₹7,500 can get you your target band.

Book Free ConsultationWhat Is IELTS for UKVI?
IELTS for UKVI (UK Visas and Immigration) is a Secure English Language Test (SELT) approved by the UK Home Office for visa, immigration, and settlement applications. The UK government mandates that applicants from non-English-speaking countries prove their English proficiency through a Home Office approved SELT before their visa application can be processed. IELTS for UKVI is one of only a handful of tests that carry this approval, making it the most widely recognised option for UK-bound applicants worldwide.
The key distinction is in the administration, not the content. IELTS for UKVI uses the exact same question papers, timing, and scoring as regular IELTS Academic or General Training. However, the test must be taken at a SELT-approved test centre — a centre that meets the UK Home Office's strict security standards, including video recording of the entire test session, additional ID verification, and biometric checks. Your resulting TRF is stamped with "IELTS for UKVI" so that the Home Office can verify its authenticity through the IELTS partner's secure online verification system.
For Indian students applying to UK universities, understanding when you need IELTS for UKVI versus regular IELTS is crucial. If your chosen university is a Student Route sponsor with a "track record" of compliance, it may accept regular IELTS. But if the university does not hold this status, or if you are applying for a work, family, or settlement visa, you will almost certainly need the UKVI version. Getting this wrong can delay your application by weeks or months.
Pro Tip
UKVI vs Regular IELTS — Key Differences
Indian test takers often assume that IELTS for UKVI is a harder test. This is a myth. The test itself is identical — the differences lie in how and where you take it, how the TRF is marked, and how much you pay. Understanding these differences is essential before you register, as booking the wrong version can invalidate your visa application entirely.
Test Content: Completely Identical
IELTS for UKVI uses the same question papers as regular IELTS. The Listening module has 40 questions across four sections. The Reading module has 40 questions across three passages (Academic) or three sections (General Training). The Writing module requires Task 1 and Task 2 essays with identical word count requirements. The Speaking module is a 11–14 minute face-to-face interview with three parts. Scoring uses the same 1–9 band scale with 0.5 increments. Your preparation strategy for UKVI is therefore identical to regular IELTS — see our IELTS preparation tips for Band 7+ for a proven study plan.
Centre Requirements: SELT-Approved Only
This is the most important difference. Regular IELTS can be taken at any IDP or British Council test centre. IELTS for UKVI can only be taken at centres that hold SELT approval from the UK Home Office. These centres implement additional security measures: biometric identity verification, full video and audio recording of the test session (including the Speaking module), and chain-of-custody procedures for test materials. In India, SELT-approved centres are available in major cities including Ahmedabad, Mumbai, New Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, and Chandigarh.
TRF Marking
When you take IELTS for UKVI, your Test Report Form displays the text "IELTS for UKVI Academic" or "IELTS for UKVI General Training" instead of the standard version names. This marking allows UK Visas & Immigration to verify that the test was taken under SELT conditions. Without this marking, your TRF will not be accepted for most UK visa applications (except where a Student Route sponsor accepts regular IELTS).
Fee Difference
IELTS for UKVI costs more than regular IELTS due to the additional security and administrative requirements. In India, regular IELTS costs approximately ₹16,250 while IELTS for UKVI costs approximately ₹17,000. The difference is around ₹750, which is a modest premium for the added security certification. See the detailed fee comparison table in the fee section below.

Which UK Visa Requires UKVI?
The UK Home Office sets different English language requirements for each visa category. In most cases, IELTS for UKVI is the required test unless a specific exemption applies. Below is the complete mapping of UK visa types to their IELTS UKVI requirements for 2026. For band score requirements specific to each visa, also see our IELTS score for UK visa guide.

| UK Visa Category | IELTS Type Required | CEFR Level | Minimum Band | Skills Tested |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Student Route (sponsor with track record) | Regular IELTS Academic OR UKVI | B2 | 5.5–7.0 (uni-specific) | All 4 skills |

| Skilled Worker | IELTS for UKVI (Academic or GT) | B1 | 4.0 each component | All 4 skills |
| Health & Care Worker | IELTS for UKVI (Academic or GT) | B1 | 4.0 each component | All 4 skills |
| Innovator Founder | IELTS for UKVI (Academic or GT) | B1 | 4.0 each component | All 4 skills |
| Global Talent | Usually exempt | — | — | — |
| Spouse / Partner (initial) | IELTS Life Skills A1 | A1 | Pass / Fail | Speaking & Listening |
| Spouse / Partner (extension) | IELTS Life Skills A2 | A2 | Pass / Fail | Speaking & Listening |

| Citizenship / Naturalisation | IELTS for UKVI or Life Skills B1 | B1 | 4.0 each (or Pass) | All 4 or S&L |
Student Route applicants: If your university holds "track record" status with the Home Office (most Russell Group and established universities do), you can use either regular IELTS or IELTS for UKVI. Your university will confirm this in your CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies). If unsure, EEC's UK study abroad counselors can verify your university's status instantly.
Spouse and dependent visa applicants: For the initial spouse or partner visa, the requirement is IELTS Life Skills A1 (Speaking & Listening only), not the full IELTS for UKVI. This is a separate, shorter test. For details, see our IELTS for UK spouse and dependent visa guide.
Warning
When You Do NOT Need UKVI
Not every UK visa applicant needs to take IELTS for UKVI. The UK Home Office provides several exemptions from the Secure English Language Test requirement. If any of the following apply to you, you may be exempt from taking IELTS for UKVI entirely:
1. Nationals of majority English-speaking countries: Citizens of countries such as the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, and several Caribbean nations are exempt from the English language requirement for most UK visa types. India is NOT on this list, so Indian passport holders cannot claim this exemption.
2. UK degree holders: If you have completed a degree that was taught in English at a UK university, you are generally exempt from the SELT requirement. You would need to provide your degree certificate and a letter from the university confirming the medium of instruction was English.
3. Degree from a majority English-speaking country: If you earned a degree from a recognised institution in a majority English-speaking country (e.g., USA, Canada, Australia), this may also exempt you. The Home Office maintains an approved list of countries whose qualifications are accepted.
4. Student Route with sponsor's own assessment: Some Student Route sponsors can conduct their own English language assessment. If your university has confirmed in the CAS that they have assessed your English to meet the required level, a separate SELT may not be needed. However, this is at the university's discretion and most still require an external IELTS score.
5. Under-18 applicants: Some visa categories exempt applicants under 18 from the SELT requirement, but Student Route applicants aged 16–17 are generally still required to prove English ability.
If you believe you qualify for an exemption, speak with EEC's visa specialists to confirm before skipping the test. Getting this wrong can result in a refused visa application and wasted time and money.
UKVI Test Fee India 2026
IELTS for UKVI costs slightly more than regular IELTS in India. The fee difference reflects the additional security infrastructure at SELT-approved centres, including video recording equipment, biometric scanners, and enhanced supervision. As of February 2026, here are the approximate fees for Indian test takers:
← Swipe left to see more columns →
| Test Type | Fee (India, approx.) | Test Duration | Accepted For |
|---|---|---|---|
| IELTS Academic (regular) | ~₹16,250 | 2 hrs 45 min | Universities worldwide; some UK Student Route sponsors |
| IELTS General Training (regular) | ~₹16,250 | 2 hrs 45 min | Immigration (non-UK); some employers |
| IELTS for UKVI Academic | ~₹17,000 | 2 hrs 45 min | ALL UK visa types + universities worldwide |
| IELTS for UKVI General Training | ~₹17,000 | 2 hrs 45 min | ALL UK visa types + immigration worldwide |
| IELTS Life Skills A1 | ~₹15,500 | 16–18 min | UK Spouse / Partner visa (initial) |
| IELTS Life Skills B1 | ~₹15,500 | 16–18 min | UK ILR / Settlement / Citizenship |
The ₹750 premium for UKVI over regular IELTS is relatively small. Given that a UKVI TRF is accepted everywhere a regular IELTS TRF is accepted (plus all UK visa categories), many EEC counselors recommend simply booking the UKVI version if there is any chance you might apply to the UK. This avoids the risk of needing to retake the test later. For a complete breakdown of IELTS costs, see our IELTS fee in India 2026 guide.

UKVI Test Centers in India
IELTS for UKVI can only be taken at SELT-approved test centres operated by the British Council or IDP Education in India. While regular IELTS is available at 50+ locations across India, the SELT-approved UKVI centres are fewer in number and concentrated in major cities. It is important to book early, as UKVI test dates at popular centres (especially Ahmedabad, Mumbai, and Delhi) fill up quickly.

How to Register for IELTS UKVI
Registering for IELTS for UKVI follows a similar process to regular IELTS, but you must ensure you select the UKVI version specifically. Here is the step-by-step registration process for Indian test takers in 2026:
Step 1 — Choose Your Test Type: Decide whether you need IELTS for UKVI Academic (for Student Route and academic purposes) or IELTS for UKVI General Training (for work, immigration, and settlement). If you need IELTS Life Skills (A1 or B1), that is a separate registration. Not sure which? Ask EEC for free guidance.
Step 2 — Select a SELT-Approved Centre: Visit the British Council (takeielts.britishcouncil.org) or IDP (ielts.idp.com) website. When searching for test dates, specifically filter for "IELTS for UKVI" — do NOT book regular IELTS by mistake. Only SELT-approved centres will appear in UKVI search results.
Step 3 — Choose Your Test Date: UKVI test dates are available year-round, but popular centres like Ahmedabad, Mumbai, and Delhi can fill up 3–4 weeks in advance. Book at least 4–6 weeks before your visa application deadline to allow time for results (3–13 days depending on computer or paper format).
Step 4 — Create an Account & Register: Create an account on the British Council or IDP platform. Fill in your personal details exactly as they appear on your passport (this is critical — any mismatch will invalidate your TRF for visa purposes). Upload a passport-quality photograph and a scan of your passport ID page.
Step 5 — Pay the Fee: Pay approximately ₹17,000 via credit card, debit card, or net banking. You will receive a confirmation email with your test date, time, and centre address.
Step 6 — Prepare for Test Day: On test day, bring your original passport (the same one used during registration), arrive at least 30 minutes early, and be prepared for biometric verification and security screening. Mobile phones, smartwatches, and all electronic devices must be stored in a secure area before entering the test room. The IELTS exam day guide covers everything you need to know about the test day experience.
Warning
“I almost booked regular IELTS by mistake. My EEC counselor caught the error and helped me book IELTS for UKVI at the Ahmedabad SELT centre. I scored Band 7.5 and my Skilled Worker visa was approved within 3 weeks. The extra ₹750 was the best investment of my entire UK journey.”

UKVI vs LanguageCert SELT
IELTS for UKVI is not the only SELT option for UK visa applicants. LanguageCert SELT, operated by PeopleCert, is also approved by the UK Home Office and is gaining popularity among Indian applicants, especially for spouse and settlement visa categories. Here is how the two compare:
Test availability: IELTS for UKVI is available on fixed dates (typically 4–12 times per month at major Indian centres), while LanguageCert SELT offers on-demand scheduling — you can often book a test within days. For applicants on tight timelines, this flexibility is a significant advantage.
Results speed: IELTS for UKVI results take 3–13 days (3–5 days for computer-based, up to 13 days for paper-based). LanguageCert SELT delivers results in 3–5 working days consistently, regardless of format.
Test duration: For Speaking & Listening only requirements (spouse visa, ILR, citizenship), LanguageCert SELT S&L takes just 11–13 minutes compared to the full 2+ hour IELTS Life Skills or the complete IELTS for UKVI. For applicants who only need to prove speaking and listening skills, LanguageCert is significantly shorter.
Fee: LanguageCert SELT S&L costs from £160 (~₹16,800) and the General/Academic SELT costs from £190 (~₹19,950). IELTS for UKVI costs ~₹17,000 for the Academic or GT version. For 4-skills tests, IELTS for UKVI is generally more affordable; for S&L only, LanguageCert can be cheaper and quicker.
Acceptance: Both are Home Office approved SELTs and both are accepted for all UK visa types. However, IELTS has broader recognition outside the UK (accepted by 11,000+ organisations in 140+ countries), while LanguageCert Academic was recently approved for Australian visas as well. For a detailed comparison, read our LanguageCert for UK visa guide. EEC offers coaching for both tests — IELTS coaching and LanguageCert coaching — so we can recommend the best test based on your visa type, timeline, and budget.
